Infinite Decks of the Week – Spider-Versus Week 3: Spider-Ham and Gimmick Decks Thrive!

With everyone focused on Conquest, creativity continues to rack up cubes for those brave enough to try. Find out which decks made it to Infinite this week here!

Spider-Ham will go down in Marvel Snap history as the first ever card to join Series 4 upon release. As a 3,000 token card, it is only logical to see more of it compared cards joining Series 5. However, I did not expect to see so much of Spider-Ham already; the card has almost instantly become the new default 1-Cost in Marvel Snap.

It’s only logical if we think about it. In a metagame dominated by Evolved Hulk, Doctor Doom, and other very potent cards, Spider-Ham is a great way to deny an important card from our opponent. I could point out the irony of removing Krakoa in the OTA the same week this kind of card joins the game, but let’s not go this route.

Check out our analysis on the latest OTA balance updates here!

Apart from the new Marvel Snap card being both extremely strong and popular, I’ve also seen a surge of creative builds reach Infinite. One could explain this with Conquest keeping everyone busy, or it might be because we entered the second part of the season. Nevertheless, Marvel Snap continues to be a game where being creative can be heavily rewarded, and decks like Hela Discard and Ronan Move can reach the highest rank in a season. Let’s just be happy about that.

Also, did you know Galactus was still around?

Giving a deck like Lockdown, which was already able to limit opposing space quite a lot, a way to also affect the opponent’s hand had to create some fireworks. In this list from Antarok, the deck sacrificed quite a bit of the typical early cards, such as Sunspot and Daredevil, in favor of in more disruption with Spider-Ham and Negasonic Teenage Warhead.

While it might seem like too much, you have to keep in mind that Lockdown rarely loses if the opponent doesn’t have a solid lead on the locked locations. In that scenario, only Doctor Doom can be a problem card. This is where Spider-Ham and Negasonic Teenage Warhead become super helpful. Together, they give you a shot at either sniping it from the opponent’s hand or destroying it before it reveals.

It’s a weird one for sure, but it makes sense if you think about it.

As the metagame has slowly turned into a battle of points with fewer counter cards seeing play, gimmicky decks like Hela Discard are starting to make more sense to play, as they benefit from an environment where the game is simple to read. If your synergies are clicking, you are probably looking at a good game, and you should consider Snapping since the opponent is most likely not using counter cards.

On the other hand, if your hand is subpar or you took a risk that didn’t pay off, pay your cube as a tribute and move on to the next game. It might seem to be too basic of a strategy to work, but it’s often the simplest things that lead to the best results.

As we are still in the Move season, I’m pleased to find some original brews every week around that archetype. This week, Glenngarry gives us a pretty unique deck with Ronan the Accuser joining the standard Move package. Also, Wave makes an appearance in the deck, probably as a disruption tool as she represents a really solid Turn 5 play alongside Cloak.

I’m curious to know how good the Ronan package was in this deck. When I play Move, it feels quite easy to spend energy, and rarely do I find myself able to fit a 3- or a 5-Cost card into my game plan. Still, I do agree that Ronan the Accuser deserves to see more play than it currently does.

Even after its nerf (which part of the community believes was not deserved), Galactus kept some faithful followers who seem to post results with the deck. In this one, we can spot the usual suspects forming the core of the Galactus deck, as well as Killmonger and Howard the Duck which are sometimes seen in the archetype.

Recently, Iron Lad gained a lot of popularity in Galactus, as many abilities are wonderful to copy in the deck. This apparently inspired Nehemiah to also throw Howard the Duck in there. In addition to the obvious synergy with Iron Lad, it also helps plan future turns with the extra information.

Ever since its change, the data seems to indicate Galactus is posting a worse overall performance. Still, the deck has shown in the past that it is when it is least expected that it can hurt you the most.

Closing Words

Compared to both the Tier List and the Balance Update Analysis articles, this one is by far the least demanding in terms of work. Still, I feel it is perhaps the most important piece from a community standpoint. Of course, most people are probably paying more attention to the pieces focused on competition, looking to get an edge over the competition and fulfill their longtime goal.

I would argue this piece is just as important, as it reminds everyone that Marvel Snap is just a game and should be treated as such, even when it comes to reaching your goals.

Indeed, although picking a deck on the Internet will usually net better immediate results, going through the whole process will make you a much better player and lead to a much easier climb next season. With Conquest releasing last week, I feel like creative decks were a little forgotten while everyone was focused on finding the absolute best way to farm Infinity tickets. Creativity can still be rewarded, and it can reach the same highs as the metagame juggernauts. It just takes a little more time and dedication to get there.

Until next time, I hope you’re having fun in the game and progressing towards whatever goal you set your mind to. As usual, you can find me on the Marvel Snap Zone community Discord, or follow my Twitter page where I share decks and biased opinions about the game.

Good Game Everyone.
