Fogwell’s Gym: Best Cards and Decks From One Year of Marvel Snap

The best Marvel Snap decks and strategy guide to celebrate the one year anniversary! The featured location doubles your Boosters, so here are some of the most iconic and influential cards you might want to play during the event.

The Hot Location for the next 24 hours is Fogwell's Gym: Both players get double Boosters this game. This is a featured Location for Marvel Snap’s October 2023 season, Bloodstone. For 24 hours, it has a 50% chance of showing up in games. Why? It has been ONE YEAR OF MARVEL SNAP! So let’s take a different approach today!

Players who strategically build around the location will get more Boosters for their favorite Ultimate Variant or that Spotlight MODOK you just pulled chasing Black Knight. Let’s take a look at some of the best cards from Year One that we might want to chase Boosters for and maybe even revive some cards from the past year.

Note: Fogwell's Gym has been confirmed to not work with Legion!

Galactus has been nerfed, reworked, and, arguably, resulted in other cards being nerfed and reworked. It was a great card with a unique effect that created checkmate scenarios, and this drew lots of people to it. It also has one of the most satisfying animations in the history of digital card games. When it was good, it was also super popular, so many die hard heralds have Boosters galore and multiple splits.

But with your blinged out Galactus, you also need a blinged out supporting shell. The most recent nerf has put Galactus back into an awkward position. It’s one of the most divisive cards in the game, but it’s also one that deserves to be celebrated on the anniversary as one of the pillars of Marvel Snap discourse this past year. This new version looks to use Galactus in a few ways that gives you some flexibility:

  1. Play Magik on Turn 3, Shuri on Turn 4, Nimrod on Turn 5, then finish with Galactus on Turn 6.
  2. Use the Goblins.
  3. Forge and Psylocke Turn 4 creates the 7 power Galactus of old.

We can combine this with the Destroyer play patterns, that allow for Nimrod to be destroyed on Turn 6 and, with Magik down, we can also destroy them again on Turn 7. There are lots of good cards to target for Boosters here, and maybe even a way to revive Galactus for all the Heralds out there.

Sera was the original energy reduction card that started it all. Other cards have come and gone from the top decks, but Sera has played a key role in Marvel Snap since the beta days. It continues to be the standard by which we measure new cost reduction cards. Many players were Sera fans in the early days of Marvel Snap, and she is one of the most loved cards in the game – even if she is currently seeing a lot less play.

This creates decks full of splits and blinged out cards, but her decks always seem to be constantly changing as new cards are introduced (like Elsa Bloodstone), and this means you always have a card to work on that requires Boosters. One way of playing Sera that fell out of favor of the more tech focused versions were the decks that just wanted to drop stats. Included in these decks were cards like Strong Guy and Discard packages, so, to celebrate the one year, lets try and see if any of these cards can fit back in.

Aero is another breakout star from the first year. She was severely underrated during the beta, but, as the metagame evolved and players got better at deck building, she began to shine. For a character with one solo run that was cut abruptly short, she has come a long way. She became a favorite of many during the year, as well as the owner of some of the best variants in the game. Debates around her strength were only matched by what variant of her was best and which splits you had.

Her fellow Agent of Atlas, Wave, was another Marvel Snap breakout success, and a pillar of the game during the first 12 months from start to finish. Setting all cards to cost four was all the things: it was energy cheating and lock out for the longest time. She was then nerfed to not allow the energy reduction and still remained strong (arguably better in some circumstances), and she became a counter and enabler all in one.

This one is looking to stay ahead and play Goose and Wave on Turn 5. Yes, this combination is harder to make work with opposing Mobius M. Mobiuss, but we get to build around Wave and the 2-Cost on Turn 5, and we can use Aero and Doctor Doom (the best 6-drop in the game?) as the finishers.

Spider-Man is one of the most beloved characters in Marvel. For some reason, the original card effect was to lock down a lane for one turn. This was excellent when it worked, but it was high risk. Then Zabu came out and the power of the card was brought into the limelight. Once the cat was out of the bag that Spider-Man just wins games, it was only a matter of time until major nerfs would occur.

Instead of the traditional nerfs, though, the card was reworked into something new. Now it moves opposing cards out of lanes, which has created a powerful card that can also be disruption. Finding a good Spider-Man deck right now isn’t hard, as he fits perfectly into quite a few decks. So, what do we pair him with for the anniversary? Another beloved card: Silver Surfer.

Silver Surfer was one of the first “archetype” cards. He doesn’t ask the question what deck do we put this in, he instead asks the question of how to build the deck for him. Many players have decks full of fancy splits for Silver Surfer and Spider-Man, which, now that it is a 3-Cost AND a Movement card, lets us chase several of the most beloved cards all at once. Movement as an archetype has strong believers who cannot be dissuaded, and this deck lets you chase movement Boosters while also celebrating the Silver Surfer archetype during the anniversary.

We have to mention the biggest of the bads, Thanos. The card was one of the hardest to build and work released in this year of Marvel Snap. Thanos went from relative obscurity on release to being the centrepiece of what is arguably still the strongest deck we have seen in Marvel Snap, resulting in a die hard set of fans who have a constant need for boosters as they battle for the most blinged out Thanos. They are also swapping cards in and out often, so the supporting pieces always need work, too.

Thanos builds today look very different, but one fact remains: you can always create a Thanos version of any deck. This makes celebrating Thanos on the anniversary day a potential investment for the future!

To celebrate the anniversary, I’m featuring one of my own all time favorites from the destroy month, which has stayed at a similar level since and features Thanos‘s pined after lover Death. The deck has a simple plan: destroy, destroy, destroy. Lady Deathstrike hits hard here with Mobius M. Mobius and Co as key targets, and Knull and Death form your finisher with everyone’s favorite tech card (Vote for Shang-Chi!) here as well.

Patriot may not be the card you expected to see featured alongside some of the others here, but it has been one of the most important cards in Marvel Snap this year. The Patriot style decks have flirted with and been the top deck at multiple times throughout the year, possibly more than any other card in this list.

It is also the standard for how to measure board flooding strategies since it has one of the most consistent ways to spread power when combined with cards like Brood and Ultron. It brings an archetype in a card, and it’s one that can pop up in some unusual places. It is undoubtedly one of the pillars of Marvel Snap.

This deck is a variation on what I have seen floating around the top of the Ladder (shoutout to Cleanup141). It includes the other big winner cards for celebrating on anniversary day, and it doesn’t need that pesky Loki. Instead, it includes some of the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.! These cards have been on some journeys throughout the year, receiving buffs and ending up supporting the recent Loki archetype, but here they give you cards to play while the deck supports one key powerful line:

  1. Invisible Woman on Turn 2, preferably in a lane where you expect a big card from your opponent.
  2. Patriot on Turn 3.
  3. Tech card behind Invisible Woman on Turn 4.
  4. Blue Marvel on Turn 5 (if you miss, try to generate an answer).
  5. Ultron on Turn 6.

Oh, and I almost forget to mention: Devil Dinosaur, the original Big Bad of Marvel Snap, is here because you may just want to drop a big card on a lane.

Stature and Darkhawk formed one of the most powerful decks in Marvel Snap in this first year. The deck was flexible, simple to play, and got stronger with player skill. It taught many players the fundamentals of Marvel Snap, and it defined a large part of the past 12 months. It was efficient power and control tools all wrapped into one.

While Darkhawk took all the headlines, Stature was the card that sealed many games, and both cards have had nerfs during these past 12 months. Darkhawk variants have also been controversial and, therefore, highly sought after by players wanting to flex, which makes them a Booster farmer’s dream during the anniversary.

Zabu was another card that has been omnipresent since its release when it turned the game on its head. The card changed how you had to play Marvel Snap and created one of the tensest periods in Marvel Snap. The changes have made it an interesting card that still remains very playable, but it takes a little more work now. So, let’s try to bring back the Darkhawk deck of old for the celebrations.

Rogue is key here, as we do want to hit Mobius M. Mobius if we can. Early Killmonger plays also important to attack the lists that are heavy on 1-drops, so be careful to lose priority early on if you want to snipe a Kitty Pryde. The rest is the same as we have discussed many times before, no frills, just efficient stats and counters.

We couldn’t leave the year without acknowledging the decks that seems to never die, starting with Bounce. Kitty Pryde is the reason for this; it’s the most powerful 1 drop by a wide margin, and at one point (some may argue still) building a deck without Kitty Pryde was building the bad version of the deck. She was also a core piece of the Bounce deck with Beast that was clearly the metagame leader of recent months.

Hit Monkey and Mysterio are two other cards we should mention, as these two create one of the best combinations for Turns 5 and 6 in the game. But that path has been taken so many times and we are trying to be new and different here for the anniversary. So, if you’re going to celebrate the year of Marvel Snap, let’s do it in style with Move!

This Move deck may look strange at first, but let me explain. Bast hits most of the cards here on Turn 1. We can then move Human Torch or start building our Kitty Pryde. Falcon will let us do it all again at some point, but we also have Storm. Yes, she looks strange at first, but you should be able to add power later to compete with others, or just Juggernaut to win the lane then and there. The deck has lots of lines and will have You thinking from Turn 1, but the pay off of splitting your movement cards should all be worth it.

Adding power is the strongest thing you can do in Marvel Snap. That’s a bold statement, but it is true with the limited board space and resources. No card does this more efficiently than Shuri. Shuri into Red Skull is, to this day, one of the strongest, if not the strongest, plays you can make in a lane. Combine this with Taskmaster and you have a card that wins games fairly easily.

Sauron is the ‘silent’ performer as he turns off the downsides of your big cards. This makes the cards Shuri buffs ‘balanced’, and between these two they created a deck that never goes away. The deck above follows the same pattern you have seen since January with the latest toy Alioth thrown in, and it was the first deck I got to Top 30 with (before promptly dropping back out).

Wrap Up

Thanks for joining me for one whole year of Marvel Snap! Every week, I have had the pleasure of building decks for the shiny new toys, helping with the locations, and even trying to display some of the more unique and abstract concepts of Marvel Snap. It has been my pleasure, and I appreciate each and every one of you. Without you, none of this would have been possible.

What is your plan to celebrate? Let us know in the comments below, or our Discord community! Remember to share your decks using our deck builder or browse our deck database!

Good luck, have fun, and stay safe!
