Mount Vesuvius Featured Location Guide: Strategy, Best Cards and Decks
Table of Contents
The Featured Location for the next 24 hours is Mount Vesuvius: Players can’t retreat after turn 5. This is a new Location for Marvel Snap’s September 2023 Season, Loki For All Time, that starts on selected Wednesdays at 3 AM GMT. For 24 hours, it has a 50% chance of showing up in games.
Players who strategically build around the location or counter the decks that do so can have an advantage over their opponents! So what will you play?
Strategy and General Tips
Mount Vesuvius has an interesting condition because it impacts the game play more than the decks, but the location can still affect some key choices you make in the deck building phase. If you stay in for Turn 5, you’re staying in for the rest of the game – and that could mean you lose two cubes instead of one when you stay in to see your Turn 6 draw. Also, and most importantly, if your opponent Snaps on Turn 6, you’re staying for four cubes at a minimum. So, how do we adapt to this?

First, we need to know we have the options to win as early as possible. This leans us toward America Chavez decks. We have to know on Turn 5 whether we want to stay until the next turn and also if we’re happy to go in for four cubes if the opponent Snaps. Getting our key cards earlier can allow us to make better informed choices about staying in for the later turns. Note that, once again, you want to know if you have enough to win a four cube game as soon as possible.

The next option is likely why this location may have a bigger impact than what you may initially think. Skewing your deck to high rolls that can leave at Turn 5 if they are losing but can also gamble big for crazy Turn 6 plays could have big gains during this location. Loki on Turn 4 or Turn 5 can find all sorts of plays that are unpredictable, and if your opponent stays in because they think they have a shot, you can Snap on Turn 6, which is something these decks don’t often get away with.
The flipside is not Snapping until after playing Wave or Sandman on Turn 5. Again, this could lock your opponent out of plays, and you can Snap on Turn 6 to steal additional cubes you wouldn’t normally get. It is the same premise as using the high roll cards, but you’re given an opportunity to Snap on a turn your opponent would often leave on.

Decks with some location control like Storm, Scarlet Witch, and Legion are your ways out of this trap. The advantage here is you get your Turn 6 Retreat back, and if your opponent does go for the Turn 6 snap they may miss opportunities to raise the stakes earlier in the game. These decks are often good decks that can play into most of the meta, so this option will give you the choice to Retreat on Turn 6 if you think you’ll need to.
Loki
Loki is excellent for something like this location. You can wait for Turn 5 to set up for a massive Turn 6 that the opponent can’t get away from. Loki decks also have room for some key tech cards. In this case, Cosmo is the included card since it can surprise opponents who think they have you locked out with cards like Alioth, or who set up for Hela plays. These decks are more likely to go to Turn 6, and having an easy answer could result in more cubes for you.
Wave Evolutionary
This deck has the ability to limit Turn 6 without your opponent expecting it. In order for this to work, you have to save your Snap for after you play Wave on Turn 5. You can then steal additional cubes since you forced your opponent to stay in for Turn 6. The rest of the plan is just to get ahead and annoy your opponent with all the great one drops that scale and Evolved cards that benefit from unspent energy.
Sera Loki
Loki, Sera, and Scarlet Witch give you all the options to abuse this location. Combining these with Shang-Chi, a key tech card, and the explosive potential from the Hit Monkey package (which could be played on Turn 5 to get around Wave decks) may be a strong direction for the location. More often than not, this deck does not present much of its power output in the early turns, which will likely work in your favor for this Featured Location.
Series 2 and Below (pre-CL 474)
Series 2 only is more difficult with this location, as it is hard to be certain about outcomes. So, instead of trying to trick your opponent, this deck tries to find out if your opponent is favored by gathering information! This deck also serves as a great shell for Loki for people who only have the Season Pass card – just swap White Queen to Loki.

With aliot out there!? … today I will not play.
Looks like a good day to bank some conquest medals
This missed the obvious an extremely toxic thing that is actually happening, which is that people are playing stealth Galactus decks and locking you into 4 cube losses. If you have Mount Vesuvius, make sure your opponent isn’t setting up for this or make sure you can beat it. Getting locked into an unretreatable 4 cube loss is a rude awakening.
Yep. Definitely helped get me the final push into Infinite with just a couple games.
