Infinite Decks of the Week – Spider-Versus Week 4: Old Timers Make a Comeback

There's a new season right around the corner, and these decks have made it to Infinite with mere seconds left on the clock! If you're still struggling to climb those last few ranks, check out some of the most recent decks that have proven their mettle here.

The Move season is about to end, and I am a bit sad it didn’t bring as much as I would have liked, especially to the Move archetype. Nevertheless, even if Move didn’t get that big Tier 1 deck I wished it would have, I believe we saw quite a bit of diversity on the climb to the Infinite rank.

I was eager to see what Ladder looked like with Conquest alongside it in this final week of the season. Indeed, one might think Ladder is just a walk in the park in the last week; most players have simply abandoned it, and it’s become all about farming bots. There might be a bit of that here, but the decks featured this week also make sense in the current metagame (if we look at the grand scheme of things).

Destroy has been a deck to watch out for the entire month, so, logically, it represented a strong candidate to get your last few cubes. Hela Discard is among the decks able to beat almost anyone when the stars align, which also gained momentum as counter cards to the archetype are at an all-time low.

Finally, the return of Kazoo is probably the most surprising part of the week. Still, with all the best decks relying on developing their own synergy, a simple proactive deck with a few tech cards played at the right time can completely stop a deck in its tracks. Play Cosmo before Beast reveals for Bounce or Armor before a Destroy effect, and the opponent’s game plan might completely crumble.

With that in mind, this last week of the season does not feature any of the dominant archetypes. But it still packs a few decks that make sense when you think about the current metagame and how each list interacts with another.

June has been quite a month for Destroy. Indeed, after losing its signature DeathWave deck, the synergy rebuilt its reputation on the back of the complete absence of Armor in the metagame.
In the last OTA, Nimrod received a long awaited power buff, which gave the archetype a new card to capitalize on.

It is still up in the air what is the best way to build around the Shuri and Nimrod core in the Destroy archetype. Some like America Chavez to make it more reliable, others run Arnim Zola, and some even include Death for more potential (just like Kenneth today).

With The Phoenix Force coming up in the new season, Destroy is a very interesting synergy to keep an eye on.

Is Hela the New Discard Deck?

Spider-Ham made it very difficult for the Apocalypse build of Discard to thrive lately. Indeed, whenever your Apocalypse is transformed, your deck is immediately crippled. Badly. In that situation, Hela has slowly gained some popularity among the Discard aficionados, and now I see more of this one compared to the traditional Dracula build.

It also seems like the climb to Infinite followed a similar logic; the deck benefited from its natural resilience to the current disruptive cards that are Wave, Spider-Ham, and Killmonger. As such, Hela was one of the decks I saw most when researching for this article, and many sharing their list had good success with it.

When you think about it, considering Bounce and Lockjaw rarely try to impact what their opponent does (relying instead on the sheer amount of points they can develop), Hela Discard has a nice opportunity to leverage its game plan and abuse cards like Invisible Woman in order to reliably trigger Hela. When this does happen, the deck looks easily able to match Bounce and Lockjaw in the points department.

This was kind of a forgotten archetype, as a lot of players just abandon Kazoo once their collection allows them to play something else. The Series 3 version of this deck still has some game in Marvel Snap. Notably, we discussed Armor and Cosmo being completely absent of the metagame in the first part with the Destroy deck. Well, Kazoo is a deck that naturally wants to run these kinds of cards, and it regularly has a good shot at playing them with priority as well.

As such, although I think the Kazoo archetype is well past its prime, the archetype isn’t completely out of the picture either. If you are a player who believes nailing the right card at the right time is extremely important, Kazoo might give you the perfect opportunity to do so.

It’s been a long time since I came across a deck that I clearly did not expect to see and truly do not understand. From the look of it, it seems like a Kazoo deck has welcomed a few pieces of the Bounce archetype, and then Luke Cage was sprinkled on top of it. Last, because there was still a bit of space in the deck somehow, Jovenshire also managed to get Shang-Chi in the mix.

It might seem like this is just a weird mix of several popular synergies that happened to reach Infinite at the buzzer. Still, one could also look at it and see an explosive Kazoo deck with the ability to play Hit Monkey and a bunch of 1-Cost cards (Kitty Pryde, Ant Man, Titania) on the last turn of play.

On top of that, we are just adding two of the hottest tech cards in the game, Luke Cage and Shang-Chi, which can be played early if we draw into Ka-Zar and Blue Marvel.

I could ruin the mood and say the deck appears to be very specific in the order it wants to draw its cards, but there seems to be a lot of logic in there, and, looking at the results, it’s working.

Closing Words

Next season is a bit of an enigma regarding where each card will end up archetype wise. Each of the newly added cards features a unique ability, and some look to be more of a counter card than a support card for any synergy. Therefore, it is hard to guess exactly where they will be at their best. This is absolutely perfect for this series, which aims to show these “outside the box” ideas that are able to find success in Marvel Snap. As such, I think Infinite Decks of the Week should be a lot of fun for the month of July.

If you didn’t reach your goal yet, you still have a little over a day to do so before the reset. I wish you the best of luck; I’m sure you can do it if you give it your best. There are a lot of possibilities to get there, either with a strong, established deck, or with a little more creativity by leveraging your Snaps to benefit from the surprises your build is packing.
