Sleeper Decks of the Week – Evolutionary Rolls Tournaments, Silver Samurai Finds Success, and Infinite Thanos

The Season is coming to a close, so check out these great decks that have flown under the radar so that you can hit Infinite and get your Infinity border!

Hello everyone and welcome to Sleeper Decks of the Week! I’m Glazer of Snap Judgments: The Official Marvel Snap Zone Podcast, and in this article, I’m going to take you through all of my favorite Sleeper Decks this week. In addition to the podcast (this week’s episode features a wide-ranging discussion going from SnapCon to Card Acquisition to Infinity Conquest!), I do my own daily videos where I scour the darkest corners of the net (ahem Twitter and the various Marvel Snap sites) to find the best decks in Marvel Snap before the meta notices.

Remember: Each deck title will take you to a video explanation of the deck, so don’t be shy – check them out! It’s also worth noting that in addition to great content, you can enter to win a FREE Loki For All Time Season Pass by subscribing and commenting on videos for the next two weeks!

High Evolutionary is Still Great

People stopped playing High Evolutionary decks, but those decks never stopped performing. At SnapCon, Marvel Snap’s first in-person Convention, High Evolutionary was in the top two spots!

Deck Thoughts: RockoSocko put his own twist on a classic build and was able to take down a major in-person tournament.

The purpose of this deck is to use Magik to create a Turn 7, then skip Turn 6 and play both She-Hulk and Evolved Hulk. This burst of power wins most games of Marvel Snap, but cards like Legion, Storm, and Scarlet Witch make it a risky proposition.

RoccoSocko’s innovation here is to add Leech and Legion, as either on Turn 5 can guarantee that Limbo stays out. This is risky, and it doesn’t go off every game, of course, but the beauty of a tournament (or Conquest match) is that you can Retreat cheaply when the stars don’t align.

The rest of the deck is standard for High Evolutionary. Evolved Cyclops and Evolved Misty Knight are technically the only High Evo cards, but, at this point, nearly every High Evo deck is running Sunspot, Jeff the Baby Land Shark, and Armor. The only real swing card is Cosmo, as he can also protect Limbo (though usually not from Legion) or save big cards from Shang-Chi.

If you don’t have Jeff the Baby Land Shark, you can replace him with Nebula or Nightcrawler. Legion can be Vision, but it makes the deck much worse. You’ll need High Evolutionary, obviously.

Deck Thoughts: W remains one of the better players and deck builders in the world. He not only created the original DoomWave, but also the recently dominant Thanos Control shell (and he won a tournament with that on). Despite an unfavored deck, he was a hair’s breadth away from another tournament win at SnapCon.

This deck has been cleaning up in Infinity Conquest, as well as this tournament, thanks to its great performance – which is unsurprising given the success of W’s other builds. This deck plays a standard High Evolutionary game plan until Turn 5, aiming to get a big lead in one lane using Evolved Cyclops, Nebula, and Sunspot. If it can do so, a Wave on Turn 5 usually ends the game.

Opponents expecting to play multiple cards on the last turn of the game are ruined by the Turn 5 Wave, which only benefits Evolved Hulk, Sunspot, Evolved Misty Knight, and Evolved Cyclops. After that, Evolved Hulk or, traditionally, Doctor Doom would usually win the game. You may notice that the then-nerfed Doctor Doom isn’t in the list – well, that was Klaw‘s spot. Klaw gives an extra strong play on Turn 5 and extra positive synergy with Mister Fantastic, and it still allows for at least some of Doctor Doom‘s ability to go wide when Evolved Hulk isn’t the right play.

Outside of the obviously needed High Evolutionary, the only other high Series card is Nebula. Nebula is very tough to replace here, but Evolved Shocker at least has some upside.

Somehow There’s Still More Thanos!

Every time I think we’re done with Thanos, there’s either something totally new that comes up, or an old version of the deck strikes back. Well, this week was no exception to the Mad Titan’s resurgence.

Peaceful Sea’s Thanos Control

Please insert deck uuid. click the edit button for this block.

Deck Thoughts: Classic Thanos Lockjaw returns again, but this time using an Ongoing shell to gain extra power and continuing to ignore the (badly in need of a buff) Spectrum. Peaceful made this deck, and it’s been printing Infinity borders for players ever since.

The deck is built around two axes. You can either try to get the Mind Stone early so that the Time Stone on Turn 3 can allow you to ramp into a 5-Cost card – ideally Professor X to lockdown a lane. The other main play line is Lockjaw, which allows you to use the Infinity Stones to cheat out big, powerful cards. Much of the deck is dedicated to protecting this play line from Professor X, with both Jeff the Baby Land Shark and Klaw as cards that can win a lane out from under an untimely Xavier.

Most of the rest of the deck is dedicated to stomping out its worst match up – Destroy – by playing Armor and Cosmo. Also helpful against Destroy, although less direct, is the Iron Man and Onslaught combo. Those two alone are worth 28 Power in a lane, which is often able to steal a game from Destroy.

Jeff the Baby Land Shark is the only Series 5 card in the deck besides Thanos. Jeff can be Daredevil or Psylocke. Also, if you want Jeff, he’s finally in Spotlight Caches this coming week!

Deck Thoughts: Our very own Bohe makes excellent decks. This one plays the Death package for tempo as it uses Carnage, Killmonger, and Venom to eat Stones and Daken‘s Muramasa Shard. This allows for a nice, cheap Death, and it’s the main crux of the deck.

Of course, that ignores the awesome Legion package. With Legion and Jeff the Baby Land Shark joining the Reality Stone, you have extra chances of finding a beneficial location, which means extra chances to Snap. The Phoenix Force works almost like an extra Jeff here, except it draws a card (just like Iron Lad). Spider-Ham and Shang-Chi offer necessary control.

This is an extra expensive deck – even more so if you have X-23 because you should definitely add her. Still, it’s not a deck that you can easily replace cards in. Legion is fairly necessary, but you’d do okay with Vision. Captain Marvel could also replace The Phoenix Force. Iron Lad is hard to replace, but Deathlok can replace him or Daken, and if you’re missing both, look to Sabretooth. The Ham can be any of the cheaper cards above, but Nova or Yondu also fit.

What happens when you combine Lamby’s Smoove deck with Silver Samurai?

Safety is a genius, and this uses the power of the base Silky Smoove deck – Angela, Kitty Pryde, Silk, and Kraven as anchors and the Move cards to keep things unpredictable. Then it’s met with three new pieces. Silver Samurai discarding Wolverine is nine power on Turn 4 that’s immune to Shang-Chi. That alone gives you about the same stats as a Darkhawk on average, while you also gain the bonus of a [1/6] Stature. Only Angela needs to be played before Wolverine, as everything else (except Kitty Pryde who will likely have grown herself if she’s in hand) gains enough power to not be concerned.

This deck is built around Silver Samurai and Stature, but without them, you can play Vision and Shang-Chi, as the original did. Wolverine obviously goes then, too, for Spider-Ham or, if you lack a Ham, Medusa. If Legion isn’t Vision, he can be Aero. Silk can be Cloak, and Jeff the Baby Land Shark can be Nightcrawler. Kitty Pryde would be Nightcrawler, too, but if you’re changing that much, you should probably just add Iron Fist and Vulture.

Our friend Bootman got to Infinite with his version of the deck here. That’s also featured in my link above, but we changed a lot with EliteHassa and that’s the version I’ve been playing, so we’ll discuss that.

The idea of the deck is to use targeted discard to get value out of Hela. The only non-target discard in the deck is Moon Knight, but the tempo of the card is so high that it’s often worth it. Plus, it enables your own Stature and Hela. Hela and Swarm help you direct where your discarded cards land, while Blue Marvel gives them a nice, unpredictable bonus. Blue Marvel‘s power is low, too, so he works well with Silver Samurai. But the star of the show is Leader, who just steals games and cubes since two power means he’s almost always discarded.

This is my current favorite Hela deck in the game, and it’s winning a lot of tickets right now.

Shuri Clone Clones Not Shuri

Shuri finds new and different ways to be relevant almost every week, but it still runs Red Skull and Taskmaster in those shells nearly every time. This week is no different. Let’s take a look.

Deck Thoughts: Kitty Pryde isn’t the best card in the game like she was, but she’s still great. This deck is built around playing Kitty Pryde over and over again while pumping her up using Forge, Hulkbuster, and Shuri. She’s eventually huge and can be played with Taskmaster on the last turn while dodging priority.

Of course, Kitty Pryde doesn’t get huge every game, so there are other options. Shuri can pump up a moving Captain Marvel. Kitty Pryde can boost her friend Angela, as can Jeff the Baby Land Shark, while Black Bolt and Stature offer an extra bit of power and tempo that can become really huge with Shuri.

This deck has been winning a lot of tickets, especially as people don’t expect Shang-Chi in the list. Take advantage of that and enjoy.

Jeff the Baby Land Shark can be replaced by Nightcrawler. Kitty Pryde is irreplaceable. Vision would replace Black Bolt if you lacked Stature, which would then be a tempo card like Lizard.

We’ve talked about my version of this deck before. I run Armor, Magik, and Deathlok over Arnim Zola, Forge, and Heimdall. I was messing around looking at low sample size stats, and the numbers here were so high that I decided to give it a whirl. Then I immediately won two Infinity Tickets, and here we are.

Of the changes, I think Deathlok and Arnim Zola are both probably right. You need extra destroy late game fairly often. Armor may be right due to the size of Deadpool decks, so it’s a toss-up between that and Heimdall. Or do I want America Chavez? Honestly, I’m going to go ask some other creators, be right back…

Okay, so Paper says America Chavez, Forge, and Deathlok. I don’t think I like Forge, so let’s go with America Chavez and Deathlok? den agrees on Chavez, so that’s just settled. And here we go, another vote for Deathlok from another corner. It’s one spot. Honestly, I’m going with Arnim Zola. It gives me a 50-50 out with whatever I Shuri, or even better odds than that with Human Torch. Okay, going with Zola for now!

Here’s where we ended up:

Early on, you’re aiming to destroy a Move card and play The Phoenix Force on Turn 4. If you can’t, you immediately pivot to a Shuri game plan. Either Nimrod and two destroy cards or Red Skull and Taskmaster still win their share of games. Don’t go all in early unless you recognize a deck and the tech cards it runs – Shang-Chi and Killmonger can be bad for certain lines. Usually you go so big in so many places that the opponent can’t stop you.

Arnim Zola ends up with two purposes: 1) You’re so big in so many places that just doubling any of those cards works, and 2) If you miss on the second destroy you need with Nimrod or your Taskmaster, you can take a 50-50 that Arnim Zola wins you the game. Enjoy!
