Mobius M. Mobius Pantheon

Spotlight Cache Week of September 26, 2023: Are Mobius M. Mobius, High Evolutionary, and Kang Worth It?

In this new series Cache-ing In, we look into each featured card of the weekly Spotlight Cache, how you might use them, their variants, and whether if it's worth pulling for or pass on to the next week!

Welcome back to our new weekly series Cache-ing In! Each week, we break down what cards will be available in the new Spotlight Caches, as well as the Spotlight Variants! The goal is to help you determine if you should “Cache in” for the content, or hoard for a better week.

Spotlight Cache News

If you have wondered why Spotlight cards have been repeating before new cards were introduced, you haven’t been the only one. Developers have answered this question recently on their official Discord in their Q/A channel. When asked about why cards are being repeated already, Stephen responded:

One of the main reasons for duplicates right now is availability of variants for cards that can go into the spotlight cache.  If we do not have a spotlight variant for that card ready then we have to hold it until one is available.  We are building out our variant pipeline further to get in front of the needs to keep the spotlight cache fresh and without undo gaps between highlighting specific characters.

So basically, if a card doesn’t have many variants, it probably won’t get featured much (if at all). After recent datamines showed upcoming Spotlight Caches for the next few months, we can see Howard the Duck and Stegron will continue to have no spotlight features. Cards like Iron Lad, Legion, and The Living Tribunal also do not appear to be getting more spotlight releases until at least through November. With many cards not appearing, and many cards repeating, make sure to check out the upcoming rotation to get the cards you want most efficiently.

To help plan your caches, in my recommendation each week I will highlight when these cards are shown to appear again as far as we know. If a card will not be featured again for a while, I will make sure to notate that as well so you don’t miss your chance.

Mobius M. Mobius

It’s time for the biggest meta shift we’ve seen in a long time. Mobius M. Mobius launches this week at a 2-Cost, 3-Power with his game-changing ability “Ongoing: Your Costs can’t be increased. Your opponent’s Costs can’t be reduced”.

Mobius M. Mobius will be the second card this season launching directly into Series 4. He is also a unique card in that he will also be featured in a 7500 Gold shop Bundle next week, making him newly available via Spotlights, Tokens, and Gold.

If you haven’t heard about Mobius already, he is the most anticipated card since his discovery. Questions about him flooded the official developer Q & A Discord channel. I will try to summarize what we know about him:

  • Mobius negates ALL discounts for your opponent, including Sera, Zabu, Loki, Beast, Ravonna Renslayer, Quinjet, and even locations.
  • If you have Mobius and your opponent doesn’t, using Wave will increase your opponent’s costs to a minimum of 4, but your cards will not increase cost (but can decrease to 4!) Your opponent also can’t have their cards lowered during Wave either (so 6 Cost cards can’t be played early).
  • If both players use Mobius, no cards can be decreased in cost or increased. That means Wave does nothing when played.
  • If your opponent plays Mister Negative, Mobius will undo the cost reduction. So an Inverted Iron Man becomes a 5/5 with Mobius on the board.

If that doesn’t help you understand how powerful this card is, let me explain. This card singlehandedly haults a large number of decks. It doesn’t make them unplayable, but it makes them much less effective. It prevents Wave from dominating so much of the meta since she can’t guarantee a 1 card play on turn 6 and she can’t play a 6 cost card (like Doctor Doom or Galactus) on turn 4.

I think Mobius is going to become an auto-include in a large number of decks. His low cost makes him fit into a large number of decks to both protect them from cards like Wave, but also cause disruption to your opponent’s deck. His ability is Ongoing, so cards like Rogue and Enchantress can can stop him, but those cards are often played in decks that want to make those cards cheaper for better tempo plays.

If you want a combo deck to use with Mobius, he revives an old archetype DeathWave! If you destroy a bunch of cards, Death can become 0-Cost. If you Wave on turn 5, you can play your Free death and another card, like America Chavez or Knull. The obvious issue with this deck is if your opponent plays Mobius, Death becomes unplayable for the rest of the game since she can’t be lowered from a 7-Cost card.

Mobius also fits in with the Cerebro 3 crowd! His ability can help ensure you don’t get Wave’d or outpaced by a Sera or Zabu.

Outside of these decks, Mobius is basically a must have tech card. His ability to both protect you and disrupt your opponent is incredibly strong. You can fit this card into a large number of decks and have good value for him. His ability to shut down such a wide range of meta decks will definitely warp the meta we were used to.

High Evolutionary

High Evolutionary makes his second Spotlight Cache appearance this month. If you don’t already own this card, it’s a great one to have! High Evolutionary is basically a 7-in-1 card since he creates 7 new cards for you to play. Despite his nerfs a few updates ago, High Evolutionary still remains meta competitive.

There are many types of High Evolutionary decks you can play. One of them is a Lockdown deck! Your goal is to play cards that grow like Nebula or Sunspot and cards like Cyclops or The Thing to negate your opponent’s power. Using Storm or Professor X, you can lock down one location. You use cards like Hulk and Alioth to secure your second location.

Another High Evolutionary deck style is with Lockjaw. Your aim is to use the Evolved Wasp to cycle cards with Lockjaw while also removing power from your opponent’s side. You typically play this with Thor and Jane Foster Mighty Thor to cycle your Mjölnir as well. Hulk is the other Evolved cards you will typically run. Since you won’t often spend your full energy each turn, Hulk can continually grow to either secure a lane or become a target for Dracula.

Overall, if you’re still missing High Evolutionary, this may be a good week to pick him up! Since he is a “Big Bad”, he should remain in Series 5 and won’t downgrade (though that distinction is now almost defunct). And since we are already getting variant repeats for him, I wouldn’t expect to see him in Spotlights very often.

Kang

Kang is our Second Big Bad this week, though many players would just call him bad. Despite his unique ability, Kang sees very little play. This card serves 2 main functions: letting you see your opponent’s play and bluffing Snaps. If you play Kang the turn you draw him, he also functions as a deck thinner since he removes himself from your deck after playing him.

His primary deck is with Galactus. Kang allows you to bluff your Galactus, or to test if your opponent has a counter. His biggest function is saving you cubes. You can gain a few extra cubes with a risk free bluff, you can play around your opponent’s play you just saw, or retreat from a round you see is impossible to win.

I said this the last time Kang was a Spotlight, but I personally think Kang is an underrated Conquest card. When you play multiple rounds with the same opponent, Kang can add a lot of mind games to the match. Is a Snap because of Kang, or your big play? Should I show my play? I have had opponents skip turns trying to outsmart Kang plays because they thought a Snap was just because of Kang. This is my no means a recommendation for you to try and unlock Kang for Conquest, but I feel it is worth mentioning when analyzing a card.

Spotlight Variants

If you already own the card the Spotlight cache offers, one of these variants will take it’s place! If you own none of the cards, the variants will appear after you open all 4 caches. Spotlight variants are time exclusive to their release week, with no estimated time on when they will be available again. So if any of these Spotlight variants feel like a must have for you, make sure to Cache In if you have enough caches saved to guarantee the pull.

If this Max Grecke variant looks familiar, it’s because it was featured already in the last High Evolutionary Spotlight Cache. If you already have this variant, it will be replaced by a Premium Mystery Variant in your Spotlight Cache.

Should I Cache In?

With our new knowledge of how Spotlight Caches will be released for a while, along with the new list of upcoming cards, I will be reviewing these slightly different. The recommendation will include an analysis of a few factors:

  • Is this a Spotlight Cache Premier or a rerun
  • Will there be future Spotlight Oppertunites for these cards
  • Are the cards any good

This week, only Mobius is a Spotlight premiere, with Kang and High Evo being reruns. None of the cards are currently scheduled for future Spotlight features. High Evo is definitely a good card and Mobius (on paper) looks incredibly strong. Currently, Kang isn’t a meta card.

My recommendation this week is dependent on your collection:

If you don’t own High Evolutionary, this week is a strong Cache In! High Evo and Mobius are great pulls from the Cache, making it a solid 50% good card rate for the cache. If you also are missing Kang, this week is even better value as you can collect 2 Big Bads in a single week.

If you already have High Evolutionary, I recommend you Hoard Your Caches. With Mobius releasing directly to Series 4, he can be purchased with Tokens.

If you have lots of Gold, you can also get him in the bundle next week along with Enchantress and 10,000 Credits. Since the variant for High Evolutionary is a duplicate, and you never play that card in a deck you use him in, the variants aren’t worth the caches.

If you don’t have Gold or Tokens, Mobius alone might be worth your caches depending on how the meta shakes up and the decks you like to play.

Rating: 3.5 out of 5.
