Legion Decks to Try on Day 1 and Strategy Guide: Location, Location, Location

Is Legion worth opening up Spotlight Caches and using 3,000 Collector's Tokens for? Find out how the new Series 4 card could impact the Marvel Snap meta in our strategy guide, as one of the few that can affect Locations!

In Marvel Snap, cards that impact Locations fit in two kinds of categories: The ones we have been playing forever, and the ones that have barely made it into a decklist, ever.

Among the good ones, we have Scarlet Witch, Storm, and, back in full force since the July 20th OTA Balance Update, Magik. These three cards have shaped Marvel Snap over time, are part of iconic archetypes, and provide various synergies through their abilities.

Unfortunately for Rhino and Quake, they represent the other category of cards. They have never been considered a staple in any archetype, let alone playable cards for most competitive players.

So, where do we rank Legion among the Location-impacting cards?

To be honest, it doesn’t look too good for Legion in its current form. First, five is a lot of energy, and it doesn’t leave much room to work with after it’s played. Second, even if eight power is fine for a 5-Cost card with an ability, it remains in the lower range if we compare it to Devil Dinosaur, Blue Marvel, Iron Man, or any other high profile 5-Cost card in Marvel Snap. As such, Legion needs to leverage its ability in order to be a consideration.

Fortunately, there are two cards which Legion synergizes quite well with, and both are seeing a ton of play lately: Magik and Storm.

Series 4 cards can be purchased for 3,000 Collector’s Tokens from the Token Shop initially as a Weekly Spotlight card, or opened as one of the featured cards in a Spotlight Cache that is found every 120 Levels on the Collection Level Track after Collection Level 500, until the next new card release the following week.

Gameplay and Synergy

We can, of course, just run Legion because we think the card is good. In an Electro deck, we could duplicate an annoying location for the opponent as soon as Turn 4, impairing their game plan the same way Sandman already does in the deck.

I could also mention Legion as a pretty cool card on Wednesdays and Sundays for the Hot and Featured Locations. Then, we should have much more agency to abuse Legion, even without a deck built with the card in mind.

My problem with this? It doesn’t seem worth spending 3,000 Collector’s Tokens or opening Spotlight Caches. Even worse, if you are playing Conquest as your default game mode, you remove the bonus regarding the Hot and Featured Locations.

But Magik just got buffed to the moon, and this means Legion has one big ally to team up with. Why? For the ability to duplicate Limbo, or to remove it.

After we play Magik, the situation should be Limbo plus two other locations. In that scenario, Legion should be at its best. It can either create three Limbos, which guarantees the game goes to Turn 7 (even if the opponent planned to use a Scarlet Witch or a Storm in order to destroy it on Turn 6), or it can be an eight power card that removes Limbo and catches our opponent off guard by ending the game on the spot.

Through creating this tension, we give Legion much more power and create an opportunity rather than just hoping one of the three locations will make the card worth it.

Is that worth 3,000 Collector’s Tokens or a Spotlight Cache? I’m still not sure, but it is definitely better than just hoping we get lucky on the Locations during a game.

What could be worth 3,000 tokens is Lockdown being a dominant deck right now, and Legion being confirmed to work with Storm. If you play Storm on turn four and copy the Flooded on turn five with Legion, every location will be locked on turn six, allowing only Jeff to be a playable card.

Before we explore what could be done with Magik and the tension both cards create when paired up together. I feel like not mentioning Evolved Lockdown, a deck able to gain energy while passing the last turn, as the archetype to slot in Legion is criminal, so here it is :

Can Legion improve one of the best archetypes in Marvel Snap already ? If yes, we might see a lot more of the new Series four card than previously anticipated!

In a deck looking to pass Turn 6 to get set, the possibility of Limbo being changed or destroyed is a very scary prospect. With Legion, we can make sure all the locations are Limbo, allowing us to safely pass Turn 6 with the knowledge that Turn 7 will happen for sure. For an archetype like InSheNaut, which relies on assembling a Turn 7 combo, getting it to work reliably with Legion could be a decent addition. This is especially true as the deck was playing already Magik, even before the buff.

We could also try a little twist at times by passing on Turn 5 in order to play Legion plus She-Hulk on Turn 6, ending the game with a 17-Power burst in the process. In a scenario where we managed to dominate a lane early on with Sunspot and Nebula, this could catch a few opponents off guard, and could be worth a few Cubes.

Some decks are built almost entirely around high rolling a specific play pattern. In this deck, we are either looking to get the MODOK plus Hela combo, or the Iron Man, Onslaught, and The Living Tribunal combo. Logically, as most combo decks are going lately, Magik is included to help with managing our draws and energy, maximizing our chances to combo in the process.

But there is one more thing to consider in this kind of build: we really only need one lane in reality, considering both our play patterns will affect all the other ones. As such, Legion unlocks two gimmicks that could be fun to abuse:

  • After Electro, we could simply use Legion to transform all locations into one we know our opponent isn’t going to enjoy. Legion‘s cost has often been considered a problem since we want this kind of ability to come in as early as possible, so abusing Electro makes sense. Iron Lad is another way to try to cheat an early Legion.
  • When we play Magik on Turn 3, we don’t really know if we will need the seventh turn for our combo. Sometimes, we simply draw MODOK on Turn 5 and Hela on Turn 6 and pop off. In that scenario, we have a 66% chance Legion actually lands on a location other than Limbo when it’s summoned by Hela, removing it in the process. The game would end there as Limbo is gone, and very likely in our favor as we just dumped a gazillion points on the board with our Hela combo.

Closing Words

I still have a hard time thinking Legion will be worth a few Spotlight Caches or 3,000 Collector’s Tokens, even with Magik and a promising Hela deck to support it. Still, I started researching for this article very defeated about the card, and I actually ended it with the temptation to try a few things with the card if I ever get the chance. Also, the Lockdown perspective is downright scary, if you consider the deck needs to run Legion to perform at its best.

If anyone asks, I think Legion is a pass in Spotlight Caches unless you are also missing High Evolutionary and Darkhawk, which then makes it worthwhile to invest and get all those cards. I have a hard time picturing Legion as anything more than niche, so you really need to love the card, or Storm, in order to go and grab it without other incentives in your Spotlight Caches.

If you do decide to open your caches, the good news is that unless you also want Thanos next week, you should be fine hoarding the caches for the next two weeks after Legion. This means you should be able to grab your desired card during the August 2023 Season, especially if it releases in the second half of the month.

Even as a card I may not consider to be competitive, don’t let my own evaluation dictate your choices. Good Game Everyone.
