Knull Guide and Best Decks: Everything You Need to Know

Welcome to our new series of Marvel Snap guides, where we feature a Series 4 or 5 card and analyze how to use it. The goal is to give you a tutorial on how to use the card most effectively in an everchanging meta, as well as help you decide if the card is worth the tokens or if you should pick it up during a Spotlight Cache week!

We will aim to revise this guide each time it becomes featured in a Spotlight Cache. If the card becomes rebalanced or the meta has changed a lot, please let us know in the comments and we will look to update it based on demand!

Who is Knull?

Knull is a legendary being, known as the God of Darkness. More recognizably, Knull is also known as the creator of the Symbiotes such as Venom and Carnage. Knull‘s goal is simple: bring the universe into darkness and void. This God killer is a force to be reckoned with. Not only can he create symbiotes, he also posses super strength, flight, dark energy manipulation, and regeneration.

Knull has no current depictions in the Marvel Cinematic Universe or any films at all. He did make his first on screen appearance in the Spider-Man promo “The Secret Story of Venom”, but nothing more… yet…

How to Use Knull

Knull is a build-around card. This means he doesn’t get added to a deck as an afterthought, but rather is the main card you start the deck with. For Knull, you obviously want to build around destroying as many cards as possible for a massive final turn.

Since Knull costs 6 Energy, you only really only will play him on the final turn. That’s a good thing though, as you want this card to be a final play where you swing any location into a win by using a single card. Since he can grow to be one of the most consistently highest powered cards in the game, he is a great stat stick finisher available to destroy centered decks.

Best Synergies

Knull obviously synergizes well with any Destroy cards, though some are better than others. Deadpool has great synergy since he can be destroyed over and over to escalate power across an entire match, making sure you never run out of a good destroy target. Venom also synergizes great with Knull since you can destroy as much Power as you want to power up Knull while keeping that power on the board still.

Outside of your enablers, Death also works great in decks with Knull. Since you are aiming to destroy as many cards as possible, Death is more likely to become 0-Cost! This can make for a huge two-card finisher on the last turn. A reduced cost Death can also be eaten by Venom to give Knull an extra 12 Power while retaining that power on the board!

Galactus works great with Knull if you can Ramp him out early (and successfully). When the other two locations get destroyed, all of the Power from the destroyed cards go directly into powering up Knull, making for an unmatched finisher. A great play line using this synergy could be Wave ➔ Galactus ➔ Doctor Octopus ➔ Knull. The Doctor Octopus can be used to search for a Shang-Chi that could counter your Knull, while also letting you see if Knull‘s power can outpace their now full location.

Speaking of Shang-Chi, this card works great with Knull too! If you destroy your opponent’s big card, Knull will gain that power. This let’s you be offensive and set up for a finisher at the same time!

A more niche but worth noting synergy is with Mister Negative! Since Knull has 0 base power, he inverts to a 0-Cost, 6-Power that can grow with each destruction! How does this work in a deck format though?

This Mister Negative deck utilizes Knull in several ways. Shang-Chi is an offensive play that can fuel Knull. Knull can become inverted at [0/6] as well as Arnim Zola. This allows you to play Shang-Chi, Knull, and Arnim Zola onto the Knull to double Knull‘s Power and create a second one!

The rest of the deck supports this combo, like Jane Foster Mighty Thor pulling all of your inverted cards that now Cost zero. Psylocke and Ravonna Renslayer act as ramp to play your Mister Negative as soon as possible.

For a highly meta competitive destroy deck, this list maximizes efficiency. All of your Destroy enablers are present, including Nico Minoru and Lady Deathstrike. This deck tries to use as many Knull synergies as possible to become a powerhouse. X-23 is key in this deck, as she allows you to play Deadpool and Knull on turn 6!

You can substitute Lady Deathstrike for Arnim Zola as well, which opens a new play line of Knull on turn 5 (if you destroy X-23 on turn 4) and Arnim Zola the Knull on turn 6. While players have tried to evolve destroy decks, this deck is very difficult to improve with how consistent it already is.

Weaknesses and Things to Avoid

Since Knull is typically a high Powered card, you want to avoid playing him too early (assuming you have the ramp available). While you may want to ramp him out for an Arnim Zola play, this leaves you susceptible to Shang-Chi, Rogue, and Enchantress counterplay. If Knull is in his own location, he also becomes vulnerable to Red Guardian.

One of Knull‘s weaknesses is Annihilus decks. The Hood, The Void, Green Goblin, and Hobgoblin may be tempting to destroy if sent over to your side of the board. If you do though, your Knull will actually lose Power!

As obvious as it may sound, you also want to avoid using Armor or Cosmo in decks with Knull. New players frequently make this mistake, so it’s worth mentioning.

Closing Thoughts

Knull is an absolute must have card for destroy enjoyers. While the deck can function without him, it is a severe downgrade to the deck without him. I wouldn’t prioritize this card over some other essential cards like Jeff the Baby Land Shark, Nico Minoru, or Iron Lad, but this card is a great target if you have unlocked Venom, Deadpool, and Death.
