Legion and The Phoenix Force Decks: Weekend Challenge Mission Guide

Our guide for the this week's set of Weekend Challenge Missions featuring Legion and The Phoenix Force! Complete the missions efficiently using our decks, or find out how they are performing and decide if you want the card!

During the weekend, there is now one more set of Missions for players to complete: The Weekend Missions! These involve additional rewards for winning games related to the week’s new card and the Season Pass card. These missions provide extra Collector’s Tokens and Gold! This week’s Weekend Challenges are:

Mission#Reward
Win Matches20200 Credits
Win with The Phoenix Force starting in your Deck15150 Gold
Win with Legion starting in your Deck5500 Collector’s Tokens

You need to win games with the card starting in your deck, and it does not count if the card was generated by cards such as Cable and Maria Hill. Each of these reward amounts will vary depending on the difficulty of the mission. There will be Weekly Missions available for each new card release. The goal of Weekly Missions is to allow players to earn back Collector’s Tokens from new cards and subsidize their cost.

The token missions are expected to differ from week to week, depending on the card. For example, three wins for 100 Collector’s Tokens, four wins for 300, and five wins for 500, depending on the week (1,000 Collector’s Tokens is on the highest end).

Most players will want to be efficient with these missions, so today we will give you three different decks that incorporate Legion and The Phoenix Force.

We’ll also give you a short guide on how to get the most out of the deck and finish the missions quickly, but first, let’s take a quick look at the new card’s performance this week.

Performance

Legion appears to have made a bigger impact than expected. Legion can be used to make some plays that are unexpected, such as transforming all locations to Bar With No Name or Mojoworld, or removing locations that impact your deck for Turn 6. This alone makes it an above average card as it does something you cannot do with another card, an effect that sometimes wins games. The current metagame and some unexpected interactions raise the card even further and potentially makes this card the one that could impact the game the most this month.

First, it can be combined with Storm to lock all the locations on Turn 5 (yes, Flooding becomes Flooded for all three locations on Turn 6). This combination beats lots of decks, and it’s the kind of combination players are likely to continue to explore (and might develop into something oppressive). Alongside this, Legion can be used to turn off Limbo on Turn 6 while playing a 5-Cost card with eight power.

Magik‘s recent buff made Limbo a very common location; the card is seemingly included in almost all decks currently, and many decks have started to rely on Turn 7. This counter was already possible with Scarlet Witch, but it could be argued that playing Legion at five energy is less of a deck building sacrifice than including Scarlet Witch for plenty of decks. Especially when combined with the ability to be a surprise card that changes all locations to Rickety Bridge, for example.

There are three clear ways to use the card: combine it with Storm in a ‘Flooded’ deck that aims to close the game on Turn 5 (except for Jeff the Baby Land Shark!); play it with or against Magik to turn off Limbo on Turn 6, prematurely ending the game and stealing cubes; and just include it in the 5-Cost slot as a flexible card to catch out opponents. The first two have some limitations, but they are the sort of interactions worth exploring as they can lead to new decks.

The Storm combination has some significant limitations (which may be ironed out with time), but it’s the kind of combination that I’d like to continue to explore. Magik, on the other hand, may have more promise. Playing Magik for Limbo on Turn 3, then deciding on Turn 6 if you want to play Legion or play a seventh turn gives you a lot of control over the game. This may be better done by Sera decks with Scarlet Witch, though.

If the combination decks do fall flat, the final use case may be where Legion lands. Fortunately, he is at an energy cost that makes this an OK outcome and we’re still happy to say the card is good. Marvel Snap is a location game, and the ability to change all three locations to something beneficial for you should not be underrated.

The Storm combination does have some significant limitations. If you’re playing against a deck that is ahead of you or can get ahead of you on Turn 5 (like Silver Surfer), it can be countered pretty easily. Additionally, if your opponent has priority and can turn off Flooding prior to Legion, the combination fails. With the Magik interactions, the other issue for the card is highlighted.

Many decks can afford to play a [5|8] on Turn 6, but the game state doesn’t always allow you to make that play and still win. Decks that rely on lots of synergies and combinations can therefore be negatively impacted by including Legion. Outside of the Storm and Magik interactions, the card isn’t often a power play unless certain locations are on the board.

The card does more than it might seem, and right now it’s a great meta choice. But we have to consider that the meta can shift very easily away from the utility this card provides. If we examine the card where we are now, it is a high performer that can easily be included in lots of decks. If we leave a Magik-heavy metagame in future, it is an above average card that you can include in lots of decks — but you wouldn’t NEED to own it.

So, how do we use Legion and The Phoenix Force to rack up wins and complete the Weekend Challenge Missions?

This is a Flooded deck. These decks are looking to seize board control with high powered cards or cards that scale in the early game, then turn the game off on Turn 5. We do this by playing Storm on Turn 4 and Legion on Turn 5. We have to have strong plans for Turns 5 and 6 outside of the combo.

In this deck, we aim to use Spider-Man as our back up play with Gamora and Rocket Raccoon as our plays for Turn 6 to out power opponents. Rocket Raccoon has the added benefit of being playable on Turn 6 with Legion for a potential 12 power boost to a lane while transforming an opponent’s Limbo.

This second deck comes from Zombiesgonomnom and is the other clear way to abuse the power of Legion. This direction may have promise since it acts as both a counter to Magik decks and a way to abuse our own Magik. Playing Magik on an earlier turn indicates that you’re going to play Turn 7.

You then have a choice on either Turn 5 or Turn 6 on whether you allow the game to go to Turn 7. Here’s the best part: if you choose to allow the game to go to Turn 7, you can skip Turn 6, benefit from Sunspot and She-Hulk, and then play Evolved Hulk.

Another play to keep an eye out for is skipping Turn 5 and playing Legion and She-Hulk on Turn 6. This turns off Limbo and adds 17 power to the board.

If you prefer to play good cards and work on the Legion quest, well this deck can do just that. It is effectively a Darkhawk deck with Legion and Storm added in. Why add Storm? Well, another great card post Storm is Darkhawk. Then we still have access to the Storm combination without relying on it to win. Darkhawk on Turn 3 into Storm and Legion can win games against a lot of strong decks by themselves. Here, the primary use of Legion is as a surprise card that flips lost games on their head. Just play Legion on Turn 5 and profit.

The Phoenix Force seems to be settling into a good spot for now. The combinations can now be piloted to make strong plays, but it still struggles from consistency when it’s left as the only win condition. Combining with Thanos Destroy (like in past weeks) is one direction to consider to clear the quest.

The buffs to The Phoenix Force do make the combinations with Nimrod decks more appealing. We can use Shuri to buff The Phoenix Force, then try to multiply the power in various ways.

Closing Thoughts

Wins with the new card may seem a tall order some weeks depending what quality of card is released. Hopefully this guide helps you decide first if you want the card prior to the missions coming out, and what you can potentially play to complete the missions quickly.
