Best Skaar Decks to Try on Day 1 and Strategy Guide: Hulk Family Reunion

On the surface, Skaar looks like it will be pretty strong. I mean, high stats for a low cost? What's not to like? Read about the new Season Pass card's strengths and weaknesses and find some decks to try it out in here!

Skaar is the Season Pass card for the January 2024 season, Planet Hulk. It is a 6-Cost, 11-Power card that reads: Costs 2 less for each of your cards that has 10 or more Power. Today, we will take a deeper look at the new card and, of course, the best decks to try it out in.

Season Pass cards can be obtained by purchasing the Premium Season Pass. When the season ends (first Tuesday of every month), it immediately becomes available as a Series 5 card, and can then be purchased for 6,000 Collector’s Tokens from the Token Shop as a Weekly Spotlight card.

It can also be featured in a Spotlight Cache that is found every 120 Levels on the Collection Level Track after Collection Level 500.

Strengths and Weaknesses

Skaar enters Marvel Snap as a 6-drop that reduces in cost based on how many cards with 10+ power you have on the board. It reduces by a massive two energy for each of these cards, and, as we have seen many times in Marvel Snap, cost reductions can have a massive impact. Plus, this card comes with a massive 11 power. Is the restriction enough to keep this card in check? That depends on just how quickly can we get Skaar down onto the board.

Looking at the base cards, the quickest way to reduce the cost of Skaar is via 4-Cost cards. Typhoid Mary, Attuma, Namor, and Sentry all start at 10 power and can be put onto the board as soon as Turn 3 with the help of Zabu. With just one of these cards you can have Skaar by Turn 4. That’s rather quick for 11 power in stats.

Shuri is another way to get multiple 10 power cards out early. This way you can widen the build to include cards that double to 10 or more power with Shuri and then copy them with Taskmaster on Turn 5. This creates two easy reductions for Skaar, and, at just two energy on the last turn, you’ll have four energy to use to support your final turn plays.

This leads to the other way to get 10 power cards out early: Ramp and/or Lockjaw. While Electro is not an effective tool due to the downsides, Psylocke, Wave, and the Time Stone are. This gives the potential for Skaar to support Thanos builds, especially when combined with the synergy of playing Blob.

Another package that can potentially be adapted to get 10 power cards down early is Destroy. With cards like Venom and Death able to come down before the final turn, Skaar could quickly be reduced by fur energy and then be able to support some combinations for the final turn.

There is one card that could be about to see a resurgence if decks are looking to play cost reductions: Mobius M. Mobius. This could be the real counter to enabling more cost reductions on Skaar and other big cards. These decks also need to play multiple 10+ power cards, which could lead to Shang-Chi being a great counter as well – even with Caiera (since not all of the 10 power cards will cost six energy).

The Verdict

Pure stats and cost reduction make Skaar a scary proposition. It incentivizes getting big stats out early and protecting these stats. We have seen this strategy before with Shuri Red Skull decks, and these have been infuriating for the meta. Plus, all of this is combined with some potential extra protection from Caiera. All in all, Skaar seems to be a high value card going into the new season.

This basic Shuri deck looks to use Attuma and Typhoid Mary early via Zabu before following them up with more power. Be careful with Typhoid Mary; it will reduce the power of your other cards below 10 if no Enchantress is played. Still, the goal is simple: play two or three 10 power cards as soon as possible. This one tries not to get too fancy and just uses simple Shuri tactics from the past like Red Skull + Taskmaster or skip Turn 5 into She-Hulk and Taskmaster.

This deck goes one step further and completely changes the Shuri strategy (potentially for the better). Zabu on Turn 2 here enables the Shuri line as in the list above, but you can also just play big cards on lanes by themselves (Namor and Attuma). There’s also the Wave into Blob and then Taskmaster line that should work well. Caiera protects Blob and Skaar, so, as long as you can control one lane with the rest of your cards, Blob can be played and copied freely. There are multiple ways to reduce the cost of Skaar here. When you combine that with Blob and other high power cards, you get a deck that is more flexible than it might look on the surface (and still potentially simple to play).

The plan with this High Evolutionary build is to play Magik on Turn 3, Moon Girl on Turn 4, skip Turn 5, and then play two She-Hulks on Turn 6. If you have Quinjet or Shocker reductions on Hulk or Skaar, this will make them playable on Turn 7 and alongside Caiera. Then all of your cards will not be able to be destroyed by Shang-Chi.

Following this logic, you can also try a deck that’s a bit lower to the ground (but is ultimately looking to do the same line of Moon Girl -> skip -> play two She-Hulks). This reduces Skaar‘s energy cost and allows you to play cards like Havok as scaling threats alongside the She-Hulk play.

Lockjaw, Wave, and the Time Stone are some of the best ways to cheat cards out early, and Thanos decks can support this package well. Most of these 10+ power cards are also 6-drops, so you can now protect your Lockjaw lane easier than ever before thanks to Caiera. This has the added benefit of being a great Blob deck as well as being likely to have priority to avoid Alioth plays.

You can also try to reduce the cost of Death as another way to get Skaar down quickly. This one will rely a little on just how good Caiera ends up being since quick reductions on Death often rely on opposing 1-drops. However, this has the same basic plan as the other Thanos deck, but it brings some more disruption to the opponent’s game plan.

Closing Thoughts

Skaar has the potential to push Double Up decks over the top, but it appears to be most terrifying as a support card for decks that just want to put big stats down early. These can come in many forms, which gives me some confidence that Skaar is likely to find a home. However, it is not a super flexible card, and that could result in it only filling a particular niche. Still, the stats are just too high to ignore.

Good Luck, Have Fun, and Stay Safe!
