Echo

Echo Decks to Try on Day 1 and Strategy Guide: A Card With Multiple Possibilities!

Echo may not set the meta on fire, but as a 1-Cost card it can be flexible enough to see some play! With three layers of use, find out its potential in our strategy guide and theorycraft session!

1-Cost cards have a particular status in Marvel Snap. Indeed, the better ones seemingly can fit any deck in the game, either giving a foundation to build upon, such as Nebula or Sunspot, or just a flexible tool which can be played at any point in the game, like Spider-Ham or Iceman.

On the other hand, cards we can’t see fit either of these roles tend to be quickly forgotten, and left for dead in our collection, no matter their ability. Ghost, Howard the Duck, Titania, or even Snowguard – all these cards have unique abilities, but never gained traction in a metagame rewarding flexibility first when it comes to 1-Cost cards.

As such, when a new 1-Cost card joins the game, we can be quick to put it into either category. So where does Echo rank?

First, Echo is part of a very small club, which are counter cards rather than the more popular proactive ones. As such, Echo’s performance should be tied up to the environment more than your average card, the Ongoing synergy in particular. If there are many targets for it, I have no doubt Echo‘s cheap cost and flexibility should lead to the card being an easy inclusion into many decks, especially those where Enchantress or Rogue feel too expensive to run.

Otherwise, if we had to gauge Echo‘s power in a metagame without specific targets to counter, the card can also serve as a defense tool for certain decks, such as the On Reveal synergy, protecting it from Cosmo. Lastly, being a 1-Cost, Echo can always be slotted into Ka-Zar based archetypes, which aren’t so popular, but never truly stop to exist.

Overall, there are three layers to Echo‘s potential. The obvious general Ongoing counter, limiting the ability of the opponent to play on Echo‘s lane if they want to develop their synergy. The more specific impairing of certain Ongoing cards which see play in decks not based on the synergy at all, such as Cosmo or Professor X. Alternatively, it can just be an opportunistic 1-Cost card in decks looking for more 1-Cost cards they can slam, hopefully annoying the opponent in the process. Currently, I would say Echo‘s best use is the second category, as certain decks could rise if certain cards would stop being a problem for them.

Series 5 cards can be purchased for 6,000 Collector’s Tokens from the Token Shop initially as a Weekly Spotlight card, or opened as one of the featured cards in a Spotlight Cache that is found every 120 Levels on the Collection Level Track after Collection Level 500, until the next new card release the following week.

Strategy and Synergies

Echo: The Counter Card

Let’s get the obvious part about the card out of the way. Yes, with Invisible Woman used in order to hide our strategy, sometimes Echo alone can dismantle a deck’s gameplan. You just have to play the card on that lane in order to stop the opponent from getting any Ongoing ability hidden behind Invisible Woman. For example, Iron Patriot might not like Echo very much.

This already could be good enough to run Echo in the current environment, considering the popularity of Invisible Woman in many decks. However, it seems like it mostly is Iron Patriot which does it for the sake of protecting it’s Ongoing cards, so I’m not sure how often Echo would actually be impactful in that setup. For example, it would barely do anything against Silver Surfer, Sera Control or Shuri Sauron.

There are other cards well worth mentioning when it comes to Echo making their life a living hell. For example, Darkhawk and Devil Dinosaur will never, ever be played on Echo‘s location. While you can sometimes snipe those by timing your Echo perfectly, just knowing the opponent is forced to play certain cards elsewhere is good enough to adapt your game plan accordingly.

Echo: The Protective Card

You can win a game on the back of Echo countering your opponent’s gameplan, especially decks which rely exclusively on Ongoing cards for the major chunk of their points. Those decks are unfortunately not amongst the most popular ones lately. Therefore, It feels like the card is at its best to negate other counter cards. You know, those cards which, similarly to Echo for Patriot, would mean your deck is suddenly not working anymore.

Armor for the Destroy synergy, Cosmo for On Reveal, and Jean Grey or Goose in various cases, these cards can singlehandedly ruin your gameplan completely. It might not be necessary, as one could vouch for just losing a Cube and moving on rather than using one of the 12 spots available in the deck for that. Yet, Echo might find a lot of value in this case, as you could just tell the opponent you will get your synergies going on Echo‘s lane (or not Echo‘s lane in the case of Jean Grey”]), and they can’t do much about it.

For archetypes with a huge power ceiling, but an easy counter to their strategy, Echo could be life changing. Indeed, those builds could go from fun gimmicks to reliable powerhouses with the new card.

Echo: The Proactive Card

Last on our list is Echo just being considered a good enough card to be played, which will occasionally counter the opposing game plan as well. Echo might never reach the level of a Spider-Ham or Nebula when they released, where the cards where basically played in every deck. However, I could definitely see the card be included as just a solid 1-Cost card in decks where they have incentives to run a few of them.

Another use of Echo you might consider in the proactive mindset, is using the card to entice where the opponent will play, similarly to a Storm or a Nebula for example. This would open some synergies with the Guardians of the Galaxy:

In this particular use of the card, considering proactive decks tend to often play with priority, Jean Grey and Daredevil could be something to consider in order to help Echo.

As every other solid 1-Cost card, Echo should be a consideration in the Kazoo archetype, no matter the variant you enjoy most. In both archetypes, the card would get support from other disruptive tools such as Armor, Cosmo or Jean Grey, which feel necessary for Kazoo to compete with archetypes able to develop more points.

Particularly, Echo is a card you want to play with priority, while Enchantress tends to be played without it, so the card has many more chances to snipe an opponent card in those proactive archetypes. Jean Grey already put Thanos Zoo back on the map lately, Echo might keep that ball rolling, and make the deck truly annoying to face for many archetypes.

If you add it all up, the deck would have the counter card to Destroy, On Reveal and now Ongoing. That’s a pretty nice list if you ask me.

On Reveal Combos Get Much More Reliable

When it comes to decks relying almost exclusively on a powerful combo, they can quickly crumble as soon as a little thing goes off. Well, Echo might remove one from the list: Cosmo.

Indeed, the deck doesn’t need all four spaces on the same location to pull off the combo, Wong, Hazmat and Odin can be enough. With that extra space, you can fit Echo early on, making sure your opponent won’t be able to deny your On Reveal effects, or Professor X the location on turn five. In that sense, Echo could do better than Invisible Woman to protect your combo, at least when it comes to using On Reveal cards.

There are other decks following this logic, which should be happy to welcome Echo as a protection to Cosmo, making them more reliable in the process.

Ramp has been experimenting with various 1-Cost cards in the past, and might not need Echo in the end. However, the deck is at its best when it pulls the Black Panther combo, so help in that regard should not be overlooked.

Hela is even more flexible than the Toxic dead. Indeed, the deck can use both Echo and Invisible Woman to protect MODOK and Hela, which should guarantee the combo goes off for sure.

Closing Words

When it is all said and done, Echo might be regarded as the third Ongoing hate card, joining Enchantress and Rogue in the competition to see play when disruption is needed. Yet, differently to both Enchantress and Rogue, Echo feels like it can be used in more decks if we exclude the need to counter the Ongoing synergy.

Indeed, Rogue would never see play without a few valid targets existing, while Enchantress is a fringe playable in Shuri Sauron. Echo on the other hand, could see play as a safety net for some archetype, which cannot afford to run into certain cards, especially in the Conquest mode.

I am not sure if this will be enough for Echo to be targeted in Spotlight Caches this week. I know I won’t go after the card, instead saving for others I have in sight in the future, and saving my Collector’s Tokens as well. Yet, I believe Echo is a nice addition to one’s collection, as it definitely adds something to your possible choices to own the card, so don’t feel bad for getting Echo if you were planning to get it.
