Martyr and Ms. Marvel Decks: Weekend Challenge Mission Guide

Our guide for the this week's set of Weekend Challenge Missions featuring Martyr and Ms. Marvel! Complete the missions efficiently using our decks, or find out how they are performing and decide if you want the card!

During the weekend, there is now one more set of Missions for players to complete: The Weekend Missions! These involve additional rewards for winning games related to the week’s new card and the Season Pass card. These missions provide extra Collector’s Tokens and Gold! This week’s Weekend Challenges are:

Mission#Reward
Play Ongoing Cards25200 Credits
Win with Ms. Marvel starting in your Deck8150 Gold
Win with Martyr starting in your Deck4200 Collector’s Tokens

You need to win games with the card starting in your deck, and it does not count if the card was generated by cards such as Cable, Loki, and Maria Hill. Each of these reward amounts will vary depending on the difficulty of the mission. There will be Weekly Missions available for each new card release. The goal of Weekly Missions is to allow players to earn back Collector’s Tokens from new cards and subsidize their cost.

The token missions are expected to differ from week to week, depending on the card. For example, three wins for 100 Collector’s Tokens, four wins for 300, and five wins for 500, depending on the week (1,000 Collector’s Tokens is on the highest end).

Most players will want to be efficient with these missions, so today we will give you three different decks that incorporate Martyr.

We’ll also give you a short guide on how to get the most out of the deck and finish the missions quickly, but first let’s take a quick look at the new card’s performance this week.

Performance

Martyr Meta Stats
Martyr Meta Stats

Martyr is the only Series 4 card for this season, and it is designed to try to make you LOSE games. Is it achieving this goal consistently and impacting the Win Rates of all the players who were confident enough to purchase the card? Can we find a way to make the downside enough of an upside to make it a worthwhile inclusion in a deck?

We need to find ways to stop the card from moving and make the ability all benefits. The most obvious way is Professor X to lock the card in place, and this works about as expected. Martyr then just becomes pure stats. Another more complicated way that these decks can “lock” it into place is with Ms. Marvel. You can ensure that the +5 power will be achieved regardless of where it moves, and if this happens the card simply will not move. It requires some additional planning, but it is very doable.

Creating these situations where it simply cannot move is more common than it seems. However, whenever you’re playing these situations out, you have to work much harder than if you were playing other cards, which is the first major flaw of this card. You are modifying your entire game plan for a slightly above rate card. It just is not worth doing with the stats that it has, especially when you can replace it with flexible cards that, on average, do more.

The next two directions that are worth exploring with Martyr aim to use the other two clear ways of stopping the card from moving. First, you can simply destroy it. This may seem like a waste, but banking the power in Venom and then using it again with cards like Knull can be surprisingly effective. Here you get to double up on the benefits from the extra power and have no downside. It is also easy to destroy as a 1-Cost, which supports Death game plans well. The problem with this direction, though, is how linear the synergy is. It works, yes, and it can be fun, but it is fragile, and drawing Martyr instead of a synergy card often hurts the destroy plan too much. Plus, you could achieve enough value with almost any 1-drop. So, although niche and interesting, simply having martyr in your deck as a potential bad draw is enough here to be a mark against the card.

Finally, we have Zoo, specifically the Ultron and Patriot style of Zoo. This style allows for the board to be filled late in the game and without 1-drops, which is key. One thing Martyr can do better than similar cards is be played on Turn 1. Ebony Maw and Titania, for example, can be played early, but they both represent a bigger risk. However, as a 1-Cost card, the risk of being hit by Killmonger is real, and if it is heavily supported by other 1-drops the entire strategy can just fall over. This led to using Patriot as a way to support the card, as the package of Mister Sinister and Brood can help ensure you fill the board with cards that are harder to interact with. Ultron also fills the board after it’s too late to be shutdown, which can be important. However, the power can be telegraphed and easily countered, and you end up in the same position as the first synergy: questioning whether you can just play ANY other card in the spot and be in the same position, or just better off when you don’t have the downside hanging over you the entire game. This is the biggest problem here. Yes, the card won’t move often, but the work to make this happen is too much for the pay off of, essentially, just +2 power.

Still, how bad the card is can be deceptive. It does not move often if you’re playing around it well. The problem is, you have to play around it and modify your other plays to negate the impact (and only getting a little boost for your trouble). When it does end up moving, it is an absolute gut punch, and you instantly question why you even tried. It is really unclear what the card adds to the game as a [1/4]. The effect is greatly impacted by the card’s cost and power. If it had more power, it would actually move less and be a better card. If it cost more, it may be able to be played later on with less risk instead of just playing it on Turn 1 or losing it. The evaluation of this card would change dramatically at different costs and power.

It was an interesting week, as I am sure there were not many of you who bought Martyr. I can confirm it is not worthwhile; it presents an interesting challenge, but it’s one that does not feel rewarding. However, some of the decks below represent some interesting new directions, so I hope you will read on and see what has come from experimenting with this card this week. You may be surprised! While this is potentially (and I am not being dramatic with this comment) the worst card ever released in Marvel Snap, the decks can be fun and present some new ways of thinking about your plays.

So, how do you use Martyr to rack up wins and complete the Weekend Challenge Missions?

For Lockdown, I’ve found that Martyr works best with Vision as the 5-drop. Vision allows you to move power around to try making sure that Martyr will not move if you do happen to miss on Professor X. Creating situations where it cannot move by moving Vision or Jeff the Baby Land Shark into specific spots is a way to ensure that you don’t trigger the ability (in addition to the Professor X). Remember, you can lock the other lane as well as the Martyr lane and it will be unable to move at all.

This was the first build I wanted to play with Martyr, and it’s surprisingly OK. The problem is that all the “bad” effects are great for Loki. This deck is excellent into other decks looking to lock lanes, though, because you often just overpower the stats on the other side of the board. You’d be surprised how often Ebony Maw behind Invisible Woman still shocks many players. Goose was an interesting piece I picked up by looking through stats that can make the above combinations even better, as Ebony Maw is harder to beat if they cannot compete against it with a high cost card. Professor X has many excellent supporting pieces here as well. Remember: Gladiator never misses, just be confident.

Destroy was jokingly considered as an option for cheap Venom food. While this works, it often only represents +4 power in these situations with only Venom and Knull getting the slightly above rate power added. In order to really take advantage of it, the goal was to build a deck that relied more on Death. Buddiilien had the original idea of revisiting Shanna Destroy. Over the week, it evolved from experimentation into this. Here you turbo your Death by destroying as many 1-drops as possible. You then play Magik and Moon Girl to (hopefully) copy Death, Knull, and/or She-Hulk. You then either skip or play Knull on Turn 6 and follow it with lots of stuff on Turn 7. Just be careful if you choose to play Martyr on the last turn.

Finding the Zoo build was one of the more difficult challenges during the week. The weaknesses into Lockdown and Killmonger were highlighted often. Invisible Woman was the missing link. What that card can do here is allow you to play Absorbing Man on Turn 4, then play Doctor Doom or Ultron elsewhere on Turn 6. Absorbing Man then reactivates the effect, and every slot is easily filled up. With Patriot down, this can be a lot of power spread across the board, and it allows you to get away with Martyr in a deck with Iron Lad. Yes there is a gigantic low roll that can happen with Iron Lad, as well as a somewhat bad outcome with Ultron (which isn’t always game over), but the pay off on Mister Sinister, Brood, and Doctor Doom is usually worthwhile. If you do hit Martyr, at six power the downside is less likely to trigger. So, with this deck, you can support the entire Absorbing Man, Brood, and Mister Sinister package that is incredibly effective at filling the board.

Decks with Ms. Marvel

This card is currently a really strong performer in the meta, so there are plenty of decks to chose from for the latest Season Pass card:

Closing Thoughts

Wins with the new card may seem a tall order some weeks depending what quality of card is released. Hopefully this guide helps you decide first if you want the card prior to the missions coming out, and what you can potentially play to complete the missions quickly!
