During the weekend, there is now one more set of Missions for players to complete: The Bonus Challenge! These involve additional rewards for winning games related to the week’s new card and the Season Pass card. These missions provide extra Collector’s Tokens and Gold!
You need to win games with the card starting in your deck, and it does not count if the card was generated by cards such as Cable, Loki, and Maria Hill. Each of these reward amounts will vary depending on the difficulty of the mission.
There will be Bonus Challenge Missions available for each new card release to allow players to earn back Collector’s Tokens and subsidize their cost. Players can also expect the rewards to be stabilized at 200 Tokens to help them plan their token budget for the month.
Bonus Challenge: December 30, 2023
This week’s Bonus Challenge Missions are:
Mission | # | Reward |
---|---|---|
Play On Reveal Cards | 25 | 200 Credits |
Win with Sebastian Shaw starting in your Deck | 8 | 150 Gold |
Win with Selene starting in your Deck | 4 | 300 Collector’s Tokens |
Most players will want to be efficient with these missions, so today we will give you three different decks that incorporate Selene and Sebastian Shaw.
We’ll also give you a short guide on how to get the most out of the deck and finish the missions quickly, but first let’s take a quick look at the new card’s performance this week.

Performance
Selene is the final Series 5 card of the Hellfire Gala season, and it is quite the toxic card. It has -1 power AND gives -3 power to a the lowest-power card in your and your opponent’s hand. This can hit the Goblins in your hand while reducing an Iron Man in theirs. On paper, this should be core in all Junk style decks going forward; however, the reality is more complicated, and the card could already be on track to be set aside for better options.
Selene is another card released this month that is hurt significantly by the Viper change. Selene would have represented another consistent 1-drop to be sent over on Turn 2 along with The Hood, which would have made these decks more consistently able to attack lanes and the downside more manageable. At three energy, Viper just isn’t fast enough to be effective when it is clashing with the same turn you would want to play your reduced power Green Goblin.
For two weeks in a row, this change has been worth noting, and in this case it is worse than with Havok. The lack of Viper on Turn 2 potentially pushes Selene out of real contention in even Junk decks. When building decks with a card like Selene, we need to find multiple ways to remove the downside: enter Carnage.
Carnage is a 2-drop that can remove Selene and gain a benefit, and it also synergizes with other cards junking both sides of the board. This is effective at removing the negatives, but it can be weak into Shadow King in the end game. Including Carnage alongside Selene is the most effective way to build for its effect that I’ve found. And if you happen to miss the key targets, it can help you remove other negatively effected cards in your hand.
Selene‘s main synergy is with the Goblins. They allow you to have a very consistent target in your hand that also wants the reduction in power. Hitting Green Goblin with Selene is a power play that can sometimes win games on its own. The issue is the draw requirements. For the combination to be really effective, Green Goblin must be in your hand by Turn 2 with Selene. This is a significant restriction; even when you hit and play the Green Goblin on Turn 3, you are reliant on removing the Selene from your side of the board. Annihilus can do this, but then The Hood is simply better.
The Hood provides you an unconditional six power for later and the only requirement is that you draw the card. If you have Selene and The Hood in hand, playing The Hood is often just better. If you’re playing Green Goblin to lock out a lane, it doesn’t matter if it has -6 power. Hobgoblin at -11 power is different, but it’s a much higher risk because it can be countered more often. In practice, you often end up with awkward hands that don’t do enough to impact the game.
Beast and Falcon are another two ways to remove the negative effect from the board. These two cards also allow you to replay it multiple times, which potentially creates massive reductions to send over in the late game. This can also allow you to stack debuffs on generic 1-drops rather than having to rely on Goblins. This approach is more flexible, and it can feel less punishing or draw dependent to play.
Overall, Selene is way below average. The difficulty to maximize the effect is only overshadowed by the fact that the decks can be built in ways that don’t need Selene at all. Yes, you can remove some cards from being played out like Iron Man, but this does not happen often. The card usually just punishes you and limits what you can do throughout the game. Hopefully builds focused more on destroying it via cards like Carnage may improve its chances of being relevant, but even in Junk-focused decks it is already being outclassed shortly after release.
So, how do you use Selene to rack up wins and complete the Weekend Challenge Missions?
Junk
This week, I’m kicking off with something a little wild to try going for the Sebastian Shaw and Selene missions at once. This is a Silver Surfer deck, but it includes The Hood, Selene, and Nova with Killmonger and Carnage. This allows you to target the Selene debuff on your side on one of these cards before destroying them later and (hopefully) spreading buffs to Daken, Sebastian Shaw, and Brood. Viper was tested here, but Black Widow was more effective since the Widow's Bite is not destroyed by Killmonger.
This deck goes all in on the junk strategy and uses Ms. Marvel as a way to spread power across the lanes. This can be important to push you over the top of junked lanes, so, with this in mind, Rogue is the tech card of choice to avoid the risk of turning off your own power card. You want to play the zero and negative power cards and then aim to Annihilus on Turn 5 here.
Bounce
This one may look strange at first glance, but the goal here is to have multiple ways to remove the negative power and stack the debuffs on The Hood or some other 1-drop. Your aim is to pick them back up or destroy them with Carnage. If you can pick up the -6 The Hood with Beast, for example, it is free on the final turn and can potentially support your Werewolf By Night or be played alongside Annihilus on the final turns.
Galactus
This Galactus deck is focused on trying to Junk one full lane by Turn 6 with less than five power (or ten power if you get Ms. Marvel down in the middle lane), which allows for Galactus on Turn 6. If you miss this, you are simply trying to play Sentry into Annihilus for the win. Ravonna Renslayer does some heavy lifting by allowing for Hobgoblin on Turn 4 followed by Annihilus, a play that often leads to the fully locked lane.
Ms. Marvel is the real power card, though, but it requires you to manage your board from the early turns to ensure you don’t lock yourself out with Debrii (when you don’t find Annihilus”]). This is harder to play than some of the above decks, but it’s effective.
Sebastian Shaw
For decks with Sebastian Shaw only, here are some recent meta decks that feature the card!
Closing Thoughts
Wins with the new card may seem a tall order some weeks depending what quality of card is released. Hopefully this guide helps you decide first if you want the card prior to the missions coming out, and what you can potentially play to complete the missions quickly!
