Developer Update for the Week of January 5, 2023: Savage Land Edition!

Hello all! Welcome back to this week’s breakdown of what’s happening over on the Marvel Snap official Discord! If you want to stay up to date with what’s coming and what answers developers have for the community, make sure to check back here each week! For further information on what’s coming to Marvel Snap, check out the Development Roadmap:

This week’s edition comes after the announcement the launch of the new Savage Land Season! Starting back from the holidays, this edition is a bit shorter. The upcoming patch notes has also been leaked which changed the perspective slightly on things. The update has been delayed for up to a week now, so we may see further changes from what was initially listed here:

This week, we get answers to how the developers feel about the token system, how matchmaking works, and if Cyclops will ever get changed like many fans request! Answers to questions will be prefaced with the developer who said it. Answers and questions may be slightly rephrased for more clarity and ease of reading.

This Week’s Questions

Q: Is the change to title for hitting infinite a permanent change or is the plan to cycle though avatar/ card backs/ titles?

A: Ben Brode “No, we are discussing some other options for Infinite Players”

Q: When are Series 5 cards going to start dropping to Series 4, and Series 4 to Series 3?

A: Ben Brode “Still working on the plan – we will make sure to tell everyone as soon as we’ve got it figured out.”

Q: Do you believe that the current card aquisition system is good for player retention?

A: Ben Brode “In ‘the end game’ players will be getting an average of 4 new cards a month. As a F2P, you’ll be able to choose whether that’s a Series 5 card and the Series 3 cards that have just been demoted, or 2 Series 4 cards and the Series 3 cards that have just been demoted.

I’m curious to see hownthis feels once we start getting tointo that rather. I think it’s unfortunate that right now most folks arent able to engage meaningfully with S4 and S5 though (ans it’s something we’re currently discussing)”

Q: What is the plan of action regarding the token system? Is the team happy with the current system, or are you listening to the community and planning a revamp?

A: Ben Brode “Yeah, ons thing that’s a bummer is that the pace of token acquisition before unlocking every Series 3 card is about 1k tokens a month for a F2P player – enough to get a new S3 card of your choice every month. Once you have all S3 cards it goes up to 5.5-6k a month. Enough to get about 1 S5 or ~two S4 each month. That’s enough to get your favorite S5 card from the 3 that release in a 4 week season (assuming you buy the season pass). I think that will feel a lot better and the new S5 cards won’t feel so impossible to get. But most players haven’t collected all of S3 yet, so it’s not feeling great right now. There’s a lot for us to figure out here but I think one of the biggest challenges for us will be to figure out how to make new cards exciting for more players than just those who have collected all of S3. The feedback has been very helpful, please keep it up!”

Q: When is Friendly Battle going to arrive?

A: Ben Brode “We are putting the finishing touches on it! Should launch this season, towards the end of the season”

Q: Will there be emergency nerfs?

A: Ben Brode “Not something we are opposed to doing once we get the tech to be able to pull that kind of thing off. Not something currently planned though”

Q: What are the Chances of getting alternate art for cards tokens spawned by other cards? Examples like rocks from korg, drones from ultron, or Squirrels from Squirrel Girl.

A: Ben Brode “We might do variants for spawned cards some day, but it would be a separate system I think”

Q: Can we get some more solid information about matchmaking? I got matched up at rank 68 to someone who is already infinite for the season (they had the title). If the system is based primarily on MMR, why not just use that and get rid of ranks altogether?

A: Ben Brode “We use MMR to some extent, but we also feed you some weak players so that you are likely to be able to reach the rank you belong at”

Q: What determines the content of a collector’s reserve? The moment you open it, or the moment you unlock it by raising your collection level?

A: Ben Brode “The former, but we are likely to change that to the latter”

Q: What changes can “that card” be expected to get?

A: Cyclops will not be changed in the upcoming patch… or ever”

That’s all for this week’s update! Be sure to check back here at MarvelSnapZone for next week’s update!

If you have a question for the developers, be sure to submit it in their official Discord in the “#ask-the-team” channel and you might see your question in the next update!

  1. I am glad the devs acknowledge how bad card acquisition is, at high CL. These systems really should have been worked out sooner though, particularly considering people are spending hundreds of dollars – this is no longer a beta. There are an increasing number of players, earning just 1-2 new cards a month, and it makes the game feel very grindy. They keep saying they are “working it out”, but fixing the economy should be their number 1 priority, in my opinion.

  2. Ben Brode, you misunderstood the question about alternate art.

If I have a Pixel Squirrel Girl, we want Pixel Squirrels. We don’t want alternate token art, we want matching token art to the variant we already have. Tell your artists to get to work on some Broods!

  3. “A: Ben Brode “We use MMR to some extent, but we also feed you some weak players so that you are likely to be able to reach the rank you belong at””

The fuck does that even mean? Am I taking crazy pills for not understanding this response? It also didn’t really answer the question.

    • No, you’re not. The response is fucked. He mistook the question, I think, because unless I’m taking crazy pills too, the question was asking, “Why the fuck am I matched to someone a hell lot stronger than me and has reached Infinite,” not a fucking weaker player.

      • Like seriously, if an Infinite player is matched to you at Ranked 68, there’s something suspicious going on, and the reasoning that he has lost so fucking hard he dropped to 68 is highly unlikely. More likely is that the player has messed around with experimental decks and didn’t care about rankings or cubes, but is still a fucking experienced player otherwise.
