Discard

Archetype pages are updated after each tier list is made. If a page isn’t up-to-date, it means there was nothing worth saying about in the last report, either because there was no data about it, or the archetype did poorly.

How to Play

A typical Discard build will have three ways to challenge a location:

  • Miek, Morbius, Daken, and/or The Collector. Cards that are able to grow in power can represent a nice anchor for a location.
  • Dracula, the most important card in the deck alongside Apocalypse, can routinely threaten to win a lane on its own.
  • Support cards in the deck tend to have a good power-to-cost ratio since their ability is regarded as a negative one. A [2/4] Colleen Wing, [3/5] Lady Sif, and [5/8] MODOK can quickly add up to a nice total on a location.

During a game, you will be looking to contest at least two lanes through these possible play patterns. They usually follow each other quite nicely from turn to turn. You might not play all the cards in your deck all the time, but you can keep in mind that the deck is looking to turn on the jet by Turn 5 at the latest in order to inform your plays.

Indeed, even if you have time to play Morbius, Dracula, The Collector, and other cards with growing power, you need to start discarding eventually. If you get a good set up (since there are now at least three good targets with Swarm, Proxima Midnight, and Apocalypse in your deck), don’t refrain from starting earlier. Otherwise, Turn 5 seems like a decent deadline for the deck. You can still discard plenty with MODOK or a combination of several discard abilities over the last two turns.

Among the discard abilities, MODOK is clearly the best one because it discards your whole hand, which leads to some fireworks both on the field and in your hand. However, the other abilities aren’t bad either since you know what BladeColleen Wing, and Lady Sif will discard before playing them. This allows you to control their outcome and optimize your hand for the later turns. Gambit can be played for some reactive capacity; it is mostly used to take out the opponent’s set up cards like Zabu and Lockjaw. Moon Knight, Sword Master, Hellcow, and Silver Samurai see play occasionally, but they don’t often make it into the deck.

Discard’s biggest strength is also its most common weakness: It is pretty simple to understand. The hand manipulation part and maximizing your odds of hitting the right card are not such easy feats when you pick up the deck. However, the deck’s strongest points contributors are well known at this point. As such, it is typically difficult to get more than a cube out of a Morbius plus Dracula start if you did not Snap early. Similarly, the opponent knows to be careful once you start discarding Apocalypse, whereas they can feel better if Lady Sif discards MODOK.

The Discard deck gives the opponent a lot of information through showing your discarded cards, so it is important to have an aggressive mindset. Otherwise, you will regularly be forced to play by your opponent’s rules.

Current Power Level in the Meta

Last season hasn’t been so kind on Discard Dracula, as Red Guardian joining the game, plus Lady Deathstrike being buffed hurt the deck a lot.
Early in the season, the deck managed to regroup a bit, both due to being great to farm bots, or simply because there is more diversity all around. Then, when you are a deck who simply pushes its game plan against all opponents, a more chaotic environment can only help your stock.

Discard Dracula is slowly losing momentum in the Ranked mode, but it still managed to post solid results in Conquest where Helicarrier seemed to help a ton with the generated cards. The amount of games is much lower than it used to be for Discard, which was routinely among the most popular decks last season. It might be a good thing, though, as the deck had lost all sort of surprising ability lately. Then, giving the spotlight to other decks might help with catching a few opponents off guard with a big MorbiusMiek, or Dracula.

Archetype Evolution Over Time

May 8th Update

  • Discard Dracula loves the early season chaos, as it can enforce its game plan against most opponents. Just be careful of disruptive cards such as Red Guardian or Lady Deathstrike.

April 19th Update

  • With more points through Daken and Strong Guy, the deck managed to limit how much it needs Dracula in the current meta. However, even though this change helped against other flexible decks, there is still almost nothing the deck can do against The Living Tribunal when that deck Snaps you.

April 13th Update

  • Discard Dracula had its worst performance since Corvus Glaive released back in February. The deck doesn’t like the current environment because there are many decks that can beat it on points, and that is the only string in Apocalypse‘s bow.

April 6th Update

  • Discard has been losing momentum lately, and last week’s slip down the rankings is now looking like a dive. The deck is still in the conversation of the most competitive archetypes, but there are a lot of decks on the rise after the OTA — and Discard isn’t part of them.

March 28th Update

  • Although it remains a top five archetype in Marvel Snap, Discard posted its worst week of the season and averaged only 0.3 cubes per game. The Win Rate remains stellar at almost 60%, so this might be a case of the archetype being too easily identified to leverage the Snap mechanic.

March 23rd Update

  • The change to Apocalypse barely affected the deck’s power level. Discard is still sitting atop the Marvel Snap meta after the OTA.

March 15th Update

  • Discard is still a powerhouse, and it’s the best proactive archetype to play currently. Mockingbird‘s release has made Mobius M. Mobius more popular, which can be an issue for getting the most out of Swarm.

March 8th Update

  • Discard is the best synergy in the game right now. It’s able to develop a ton of points while looking relatively solid against the popular disruptive cards.

March 2nd Update

February 23rd Update

  • Proxima Midnight has significantly helped the archetype this week. Discard Dracula is a high Tier 2 contender, while Discard Combo is high in Tier 3.
