Guide

Some time has passed since the original bundle comparison article was written. During this time we have learned a lot more about the new card acquisition system, so I decided to change the approach to evaluating bundles. This will be covered in more detail in the next article on August’s bundles. But the point is that now the calculations are based on Series 5 cards, not Series 4, as before. Below is the updated guide, up to date on the new calculations.

Artist Showcase type bundles traditionally have little value because it’s assumed that you’re willing to spend significantly more for a bundle with variants from a particular artist (who may be your favorite) instead of semi-random variants.

The Artist Showcase: Rian Gonzales bundle is no exception; it has a Progress Value of 1.1, which means it’s only 10% better than buying similar content in the in-game shop, and it has a Cosmetic Value of 0.8, so it’s actually 20% more expensive than buying similar cosmetic content in the shop. All the other values are also very low. This bundle has a value of 0.06 Tokens per Gold, and, more importantly, buying it will get you 0.02 more cards compared to buying Token Tuesdays. It’s obvious this bundle isn’t designed to get new cards at all, but due to the number credits it’s comparable in value in the difference of new cards to Token Tuesdays.

So by buying this bundle you will get about the same profit in the number of cards as when you buy Token Tuesdays. So if you like the variants in the bundle, you won’t lose value by buying it, as long as you use Spotlight Caches wisely.

What about the usefulness and frequency of seeing such variants in the meta? What if they’re variants for really good cards? Especially since Rescue is a Series 3 card, which means a new player will be able to use her right away — even without the original card.

Due to the versatility of Rescue‘s mechanics, it’s not a bad card for a new player. It doesn’t require a lot of synergy, and the ability is easy to learn. Still, as you get more Series 3 cards, she will become more and more useless, so it’s questionable to buy this bundle so early in the game just to have Rescue a little earlier than you might otherwise have had it.

Now, let’s see how useful these cards are for a player with an almost complete collection. After all, this determines how often a player can use the purchased variants.

Scarlet Witch is a great addition to the Sera Control archetype, where it serves the important function of changing locations to increase the deck’s stability. Scarlet Witch is also usually included in Cerebro-3 decks, but Sera Control is a much stronger meta deck so that is the one shown below. If Sera Control decks are suddenly seriously nerfed, Scarlet Witch may start showing up in games much less frequently.

Unfortunately for Rescue, it’s unlike Scarlet Witch in that it is barely represented in the meta. It’s a card with no obvious strong synergies, so players prefer to use other, more impactful cards in their decks. Below is a completely non-meta deck where the creator managed to unlock Rescue‘s potential in the best way possible. However, Rescue is clearly not a card whose variant you’ll be able to use often.

My final take on the Move Lockdown deck! Definitely my favorite deck I have ever created! I just can’t stop playing that.

There is so much synergies like Lizard + Stegron, Storm + Jessica Jones, Rescue + Spider-Man and etc.

I love playing Magneto, but in this meta he makes the deck weaker.

All things considered, Artist Showcase: Rian Gonzales is a mediocre bundle under the new Card Acquisition system. If you’re a big fan of Rian Gonzales or the Chibi variants, you can safely buy this bundle as you won’t lose value if you use Spotlight Caches wisely. If, however, you’re willing to wait for better bundles and you don’t like these Rian Gonzales variants, you can safely skip this bundle. Which is why we rate this bundle a 2.5 out of 5.

    • Bundle-specific variants are exclusive and are likely will not be offered through other sources, unless it is from a Season Pass from the Beta.
