Thaddeus Ross is the second Series 5 card joining Marvel Snap for the February 2025 season, Brave New World. It is a 2-Cost, 2 Power card that reads: When your opponent ends a turn with unspent Energy, draw a card with 10 or more Power.
Today, we will take a deeper look at the new card and, of course, the best decks to try it out in.

Spotlight Cache
Series 5 cards can be purchased for 6,000 Collector’s Tokens from the Token Shop initially as a Weekly Spotlight card, or opened as one of the featured cards in the Spotlight Caches that are found every 120 Levels on the Collection Level Track after Collection Level 500 (until the next new card releases the following week).
Strengths and Weaknesses
Drawing cards when your deck has only 12 of them is a huge increase in consistency, hence why Second Dinner has always said that they want to be cautious with those abilities. As such, it is no surprise to see Thaddeus Ross lower than the “base” power for 2-Costs and have a condition in exchange for his targeted draw ability.
Payoffs
Let’s start with looking at the crucial 10+ power cards that certain decks need to draw on time:

Both Red Hulk and Evolved Hulk in a High Evolutionary deck need to be in your hand as soon as possible to start growing their power. If they don’t start in your hand, the potential to draw them a turn earlier represents a possible +3 or +2 power at the end of the game.

Whenever you include any of these four cards in your deck, you want to use their ability to get them on the board for cheap, which means your deck is likely built around having them. An extra shot at finding any one of these in time goes a long way toward making your deck more reliable.

There are also some cases where you might not want to play the cards Thaddeus Ross can draw, but drawing them on Turn 6 isn’t ideal since you would lose the opportunity to synergize with their abilities.

Whether you play these on Turn 4 as their cost allows or you get two discounted 4-Costs to play on Turn 6, you want to draw these cards on time (even if only to plan around their presence).
Enabling
Overall, Thaddeus Ross has plenty of good targets in Marvel Snap. Now you have to ask whether the card will trigger often enough to be worth including in your deck.

Plenty of decks—especially ones with Wiccan and/or Speed—are built to be very efficient with how they use their energy. Because of this, it might not be so simple to get Thaddeus Ross to draw you a card. It is likely that you’ll have to help the new 2-Cost a little, for example by disrupting your opponent’s play patterns and messing with their energy usage.

Hand disruption is very limited in Marvel Snap because it can quickly end a match on the spot if you’re able to reliably mess up several of your opponent’s cards. From the cards listed above, only the first three can be played as standalones. Selene,
You could also take the opposite route and give your opponent more energy instead of limiting their ability to use what they have. Luna Snow got buffed recently, so this might be a solid option to consider.

The Verdict
There are plenty of 10 power cards in the game, with one archetype in particular that avidly wants to draw them: the 10 Power archetype. As such, if Thaddeus Ross can consistently activate and draw you a card or two, there is no doubt that at least one deck will be looking to play it.
This is where the trouble might start. Thaddeus Ross not only faces a meta that is designed to use energy very efficiently, it also has to beat the likes of Iron Patriot and other incredible 2-Cost cards in order to find a spot in decks.
Because of the current environment, I see Thaddeus Ross as a “win more” card. If you play it on Turn 2 and your opponent can’t use their energy, you’ll have two good reasons to Snap: you drew one extra card, and your opponent isn’t drawing very well.
Unfortunately, an easy Snap typically means your opponent has an equally easy Retreat, so Thaddeus Ross will very often only get you one cube. This isn’t bad, though, as one cube for two or three turns is a decent ratio. Still, there are already plenty of cards like that in the game—including the current and previous Season Pass cards.
In that context, Thaddeus Ross feels like an unnecessary expense, even though the card’s performance should look good just because it fits in the game’s current top archetype.
Pre-Release Score:
Thaddeus Ross Decks
Play Spider-Ham or Iceman to help Thaddeus Ross a bit, or toss caution to the wind and run Iron Patriot in addition to the new card. This is the obvious landing spot for the new 2-Cost.
I would rather have Nico Minoru than Thaddeus Ross due to her ability to destroy in addition to draw cards, but, for those who are missing the 1-Cost, there is some synergy here.
Selene could replace
The difference between finding She-Hulk or not in a Double Up deck is massive, so a card that helps with that is gladly welcomed. I only had to replace Mockingbird with Sasquatch to give the deck another target.
The best performing High Evolutionary deck for a while has been one with all three Hulks, which gives Thaddeus Ross plenty of targets to draw.
You can’t draw Hela with Thaddeus Ross, but every card you remove from your deck is a massive increase to the likelihood that you’ll find the Goddess of Death. For example, seeing ten cards from your deck instead of nine gives you an 8% (from 75% to 83%) higher chance to find her.

Closing Thoughts
This was a weird thought experiment because I can see how Thaddeus Ross clearly isn’t necessary at the moment, but it also works in a variety of synergies and could be great to have if nerfs were to happen. Indeed, while I believe only the 10 Power archetype is currently strong enough to make the card look great, all the other builds I mentioned could easily come back if they were buffed or the global power level was tuned down a bit.
As such, I can’t recommend spending Spotlight Keys or Collector’s Tokens on the new card right away. It just doesn’t look necessary in this environment. However, I wouldn’t be surprised if Thaddeus Ross turned out to be a fine investment in the long run.
If you have a lot of Spotlight keys and not many Collector Tokens, you might want to get it right now. Otherwise, I would monitor it, and possibly keep 6,000 Collector’s Tokens in the bank just in case.
I hope this review of the new card was helpful. Feel free to share your opinions and excitement about the card in the comments. You can find everyone on the Marvel Snap Zone team in our community discord to have a chat or ask any questions.
Good Game Everyone!
