Gorr the God Butcher

Wrapping up this season is the premiere of Gorr the God Butcher! He is a 6-Cost, -1 Power card with the ability Ongoing: +2 Power for EACH On Reveal card in play. This means Gorr will gain Power for every On Reveal you play AND every On Reveal your opponent plays. This distinction pushes Gorr‘s potential Power to incredible highs, which explains the negative starting Power.

Gorr‘s ability gives Snap a new kind of finisher for decks to explore. A large body with a scalable Power has always been strong, such as Red Hulk and Blob. We can all get excited about the possibility of Gorr reaching insane Power levels in match ups like Bounce, but what about the average match?

To measure this, let’s look at the average number of On Reveal cards in the top meta decks. There are highs of 10 On Reveal cards in a few decks, and lows of 2 or 3 in others. On average, though, you can expect to see 6 – 7 On Reveal cards per game. If you assume both players will play at least 3 of those On Reveals each in an average game, Gorr would reach 11 total Power. This is fairly normal for a 6-Cost card, which is actually a very good thing. In an average game, Gorr is a regular finisher. In matches where you and/or your opponent play more than the average, Gorr starts to get VERY strong. If both players use 5 On Reveals (which isn’t even a crazy amount), Gorr is now 19 Power. That’s better than Blob, and less restrictive than The Infinaut!

What this thought experiment shows us is that Gorr looks VERY promising. Since you have control over how many On Reveals you use, you can very easily increase Gorr‘s average Power across your matches. To visualize different ways you can utilize him, let’s look at some decks!

Bounce is already a great meta deck, and it also uses a ton of On Reveals. You typically wait until Turn 6 to dump your hand and make Hit Monkey go bananas. With Gorr, you can dump your hand on Turn 5 and use The God Butcher on Turn 6 to solo win a location. For matches where Hit Monkey also simply refuses to appear, Gorr can be a good backup. Agent Venom is also a good synergy here since he can remove that negative Power, immediately setting Gorr‘s Power from -1 to 3, plus an additional +2 due to the On Reveal.

Since you want to hand dump on Turn 5, you may also want substitute in Sasquatch. The hand dump can give you a very strong Turn 6 with both Gorr and Sasquatch hitting the board together. Bounce decks have lots of options, so you can easily substitute cards in and out as you see fit.

Starter Card

This is an On Reveal deck mixed with some Devil Dinosaur. To ensure Gorr grows as large as possible, you want to play lots of On Reveal cards. To do this, you have lots of 1- and 2-Cost cards. To make sure you don’t run out of cards, though, most of these On Reveals generate cards. This generation gives you the option of winning one location with Devil Dinosaur and another with either Odin or Gorr!

Fun Gorr Decks

Typically I would list a fun deck to try in this section, but Gorr has a lot of potential fun homes! To highlight the sheer number of decks he could function well in, here’s a quick list of some of the ones I am very excited to test out:

This isn’t every deck idea, but this highlights the potential homes Gorr could quickly find.

Gorr Prediction

When you look at the default filters in Snap, On Reveal is by far the largest category. With such an extensive list of playable On Reveal cards, I don’t think Gorr will ever struggle to consistently reach an impressive Power. He has all of the markings of the next big finisher that will warp the meta. The craziest part about this card is that your opponent can barely stop Gorr from growing. Unless you just stop using your On Reveal cards, Gorr will constantly grow throughout the match. As a 6-Cost, he will often hit the board last, making him likely to survive many counters as well.

We may see a surge in Echo as a counter to Gorr since she disables his Power gain. Super-Skrull is also about to be incredibly valuable. Either way, I think Gorr is going to make a big impact on the meta, and I think it will be a must-have card.

Havok

Joining Gorr this week is the return of Havok! There isn’t much to say about this card. It is just bad, and it is in the competition for one of the worst cards in the game. If Arishem has taught us anything, it’s that energy is important in this game. So why would you sacrifice yours for a measly 4 Power? Compare that to U.S. Agent, which offers an instant 3 Power and can swing 4 Power per card. Plenty of decks have tried to find a way to use Havok effectively, but they all struggled to make a meaningful impact on the meta.

This is one of the latest decks using Havok, which did make it to our Ranked Tier List this month. Havok essentially rides off the back of a collection of good cards like Agent Venom and Thena. You don’t need a ton of energy on the last turn with a deck full of low Cost cards. This let’s you get some value out of playing Havok, but you typically want to play him on Turn 4 or later.

I think it’s pretty safe to say Havok isn’t a necessary card for your collection. Any deck that uses him can sub him out for other options. With Shadow King also being relevant right now, that makes Havok more vulnerable. It’s possible we see a buff to this card in the future, but if you miss him this week, he is Series 4 and a likely contender for a Series drop in my opinion.

Legion

Legion is quite a different story from Havok. This card was a surprise hit ever since its release. Despite its simple text, this card gives you some surprising capabilities. You can remove restrictive locations, manipulate advantageous ones, and even pull off fun combos. He currently sees the most play within Arishem since you can play him a turn earlier and take full advantage of that manipulation, but he also sees occasional play in Sera Control, or sometimes as a surprise substitute in a Good Cards deck.

Deadpool’s Diner is still running, and this Arishem deck has been a popular choice for the mode. Legion serves the same role here as in any Arishem deck: get ahead on board and flip locations to your favor in order to secure your victory. By playing Legion early, you also leave yourself plenty of time to play your big cards on the later turns.

This is definitely a card worthy of owning. There isn’t another card that is capable of the same feats. At Series 4, you have some flexibility on how to acquire him if you can’t get him during this week’s cache. He isn’t mandatory for decks to operate, but he can single-handedly win you matches.

Spotlight Variants

If you already own the cards the Spotlight Caches offer, one of the variants below will take its place! If you own none of the cards, the variants will appear after you open all four caches. Spotlight Variants are time exclusive to their release week and will only become available again after one full year has passed.

After one year, these Spotlight Variants will be available for purchase from the Daily Offer section of the shop. They will cost 2,400 Gold per variant. So, if any of these Spotlight Variants feel like a must have for you, make sure to Cache In if you have enough caches saved to guarantee the pull!

Should I Cache In?

This week dips to the lowest value we have seen in weeks, offering only one Series 5 card with two Series 4 cards. Havok is mostly a meme card that people try to make work by putting it into generally good decks. Legion, however, is a unique tech card that can create a wide range of potential options for your deck. Gorr looks like an incredibly strong finisher that I struggle to see a downside on.

This week is a tricky one. It feels like the developers know Gorr will be a hit, so they threw in some Series 4 cards that needed a feature since you’re going after Gorr regardless. Strictly looking at value, this is a Hoard week where you can utilize your Collector’s Tokens for Gorr if you want him. Looking at card abilities, Legion and Gorr are a great pair of cards to own, and if you are missing Legion this is a great Cache In week.

Gorr could very well end up as one of those must-have cards that is worth using four Spotlight Keys to unlock. If you are low on resources, I would wait a few days after his release before going for him. If the card is as good as I think, it’s worth opening for. If it is more average than great, it may not be worth your very limited resources. While I prefer to give more direct recommendations, putting a good card into a bad cache makes for a tough recommendation across all players.

Rating: 2.5 out of 5.
