4. Martyr – 43 points – Previously #4

Martyr is extremely underrated. Very few creators think much of her, but also, very few tried to actually use her. 1-4 isn’t broken, but it’s a good stat line, and redundancy of power is a real thing. She has a home in pure Zoo decks, which fill the board, and Professor X which can use her for Priority and prevent the movement. Still, she’s probably not worth the tokens unless you’re nearly collection complete, so I don’t blame people for not having her.

Still, she’s better than Gladiator and few know it based on this survey. I’ve never seen Martyr move (not a single time!) and most who play her claim to have seen it once or twice at most. That just makes her a well-statted 1 in well over 90% of her games. She doesn’t win all of those, but she’s good. Gladiator, meanwhile, loses me an awful lot of games by pulling something powerful or thinning their deck from a mediocre draw. He’s well-statted, but the downside of those stats, while looking less dangerous, has been far worse.

  • Martyr, cos why? Terrible card BUT I’m yet to lose a game with her due to her ability. I think she’ll get a buff back to her 2/6 datamined stats and then people will be annoyed they skipped her. – Devilish
  • The answer to “Why would I play her when I could play Ant-Man or Hawkeye instead?” is “now you can play all three”. Or that she can be 1/4 without the same setup as the other two. – LaurenWhatever
  • Martyr is the most interesting card, but I wish that translated to interesting gameplay. – Bradcifer
  • She’s got good power for the cost if you can find a way to switch off her downside. And that’s not very hard. You can hit her with Zero. You can play Professor X to her lane. You can just fill up the board. Or you can feed her to Venom. A lot of options. And lets try to make MARTYR useful. – Tobi
  • I won several infinite runs with her, so much more playable than everyone is saying. – Teebs

3. Gladiator – 81 – Previously #2

Apparently, people think Gladiator is about twice as good as Martyr. He’s had his uses – a single pump makes him kill almost everything, and now that the month is over, that buff becomes more likely with Sebastian Shaw in the game.

In Silver Surfer decks, he represents great stats though, and in Destroy he’s great stats that you can get use out of – either by an extra kill or eating him with Venom and using him both there and in Knull. He’s not a bad card, but he is a dangerous one. Want proof? Here’s the cards I’d rather not pull with him:

Almost any one cost card, Bucky Barnes, Black Widow, Mister Sinister, Scorpion, Okoye, Mirage, Wolverine, America Chavez, Mantis, Sentinel, Shocker, Green Goblin, Ironheart, Morph usually, Brood, Electro, Wave, Negasonic Teenage Warhead, Magik, Sauron, Debrii, Crystal, Moon Knight, Nakia, Agent Coulson, Hulkbuster, Mister Negative, Darkawk, Shuri, Jubilee, High Evolutionary, Man-Thing, sometimes Warpath or The Pheonix Force, Evolved The Thing, Drax, Crossbones, Sentry, Black Cat, Typhoid Mary, White Tiger, Leech, Devil Dinosaur, Ronan, Black Panther, Nimrod, Black Bolt, Gamora, Jane Foster, Abomination, Vision, Spider-Woman, Aero, Red Skull, Alioth, Leader, Doctor Doom, Spectrum, Onslaught, Thanos, Heimdall, Odin, Helacarrier, Living Tribunal, She-Hulk, Orka, Hulk, Magneto, Giganto, The Infinaut, and Death.

Yeah, I hate Gladiator.

  • I think Gladiator is underrated and players just don’t want to play him because the card is too straightforward, expensive, and boring, unlike the more interesting Annihilus. – Kirallas
  • Not sure why but I just really like the card removal. – Progger
  • This card is fun, but too much of a double-edged sword to choose to play it over something more reliable. In the best-case scenario, you destroy a card from your opponent’s deck, but still thin their deck for them. In the worst case, you give them the win. – CallMeSal
  • He has good stats for the energy investment. The fact that the ability resolves or not should be not your main focus when you build around the card. I would like to take advantage of this space to share the list I never did on Twitter. I’m probably one of the few who reach Infinite with Gladiator. Gladiator + Goose = Winning lane. I’d like to share my Infinite deck here, since I never did on Twitter. – Bohe

2. Annihilus – 123 – Previously #1

So much for being a deck enabler, at least for now. Annihilus is, instead of a junk archetype boss monster, a very good card in a small package that fits into a variety of decks. Along with Annihilus, Sentry and the Hood fit into such decks as Bounce, Shuri, Lockdown, and Darkhawk good stuff. We’ll need some time to really parse how good these versions are as compared to the standard, but at least Annihilus is both powerful and gives us new and interesting play patterns.

  • He enables an archetype. – Lamby
  • The impending doom Annihilus brought was worse than what ended up happening. I still think there’s time for him to be a menace, though. – FaThorNewman
  • Even though I hate junk, it allows me to play different cards like Sentry. – SavageYeti
  • Annihilus is the most interesting the package of Hood/Sentry and him was much more splashable than I expected (thought Viper/Debrii would be needed more to make it work). – Revis
  • With the addition of Annihilus to the game toxic is going to be meta. – Prashaun
  •  Annihilus being released has been the most interesting to me because something like junk being popular makes people want to play less. I always figured cards like Green Goblin and Hobgoblin and Black Widow were just slightly underwhelming intentionally so people could play that style without making other players mad. Now they buffed Widow and Annihilus is here. – Bad Player
  • My personal favorite release yet. – Drewberry.
  • Annihilus was my most interesting card this season. I thought he would be meh and only fit in 1 deck, but he has been surprisingly good in deck with Hood and Sentry, not just full junk decks. – Default Dan
  • Did pretty well in its opening week, although it started to fade already. Still miles ahead of the other two. – Den
  • Makes clog and clog hybrid decks a valid archetype and will still get more synergy from Selene in December. – Doctor Octillery
  •  Simultaneously made junk decks better whilst also making them more linear and predictable. Although the card is very strong, it is only as strong as the decks it goes in, and the decks are not as strong as they need to be.

1. Ms. Marvel – 154 – Previously #3

Ms. Marvel is one of the very best cards in the game, full stop. Despite this, it’s easy to see what many creators missed about her ability. We had never seen a card care about unique costs before, so some players were unsure how easy or difficult that would be to pull off. Further, Ongoing hate is easy to access – Enchantress, Rogue, Echo – so if Ms. Marvel was good, the answers could just be played.

It turns out that while the unique costs thing was occasionally clunky and answers found their way to the meta, but a 4-15 is so far ahead of curve, none of it mattered. Ms. Marvel is one of the very best cards in the game.

  • I liked her unique cost way of adding power. Something new to play around with and having to track to make sure you don’t mess up. which I definitely didn’t do many times. – Pilk
  • I like the unique nature of Ms Marvel’s ability and how she helps enable other cards, like Galactus! – Comixfan
  • Ms. Marvel by far the best card this season. Very versatile and plugs tons of power if played right. – King of Canada
  • She’ll be a commonly played card for a long time. – Monroe Bieler
  • Amazing points per energy value, and the standard of which power creep should be measured now. Team Counter Gaming
  • I think Ms. Marvel is exactly what a season pass card should be – strong, but requires a build-around and isn’t generally just good in everything. – Peaceful Sea
  • She’s bringing 4-cost cards back in style with a power worth building an entire deck around or just throwing into almost any blend of good cards. – TeddyNinja
  • Ms. Marvel has been an awesome card for me, I’ve been running a pretty crazy list with Loki, Darkhawk, Dino, Ms Marvel, Mystique, and it’s STRONG! With her strength in lockdown as well, generally just a beast of a card. – Myth
  •  Ms. Marvel really, really surprised me and helped spread out the meta more. Really happy with her addition to the game. – Tuccrr
  • I think we had talked about how good Marvel would be, 4/15 was always super underrated for no reason. – W
