Doctor Doom 2099 is the next Series 5 card joining Marvel Snap for the December 2024 season, Marvel Rivals. It is a 4-Cost, 2 Power card that reads: After each turn, add a DoomBot 2099 to a random location if you played (exactly) 1 card. DoomBot 2099 is a 4-Cost, 2 Power card that reads: Ongoing: Your other DoomBots and Doom have +1 Power.
Today, we will take a deeper look at the new card and, of course, the best decks to try it out in.

Spotlight Cache
Series 5 cards can be purchased for 6,000 Collector’s Tokens from the Token Shop initially as a Weekly Spotlight card, or opened as one of the featured cards in the Spotlight Caches that are found every 120 Levels on the Collection Level Track after Collection Level 500 (until the next new card releases the following week).
Strengths and Weaknesses
A new 4-Cost card that you want to play as early as possible immediately brings to mind one incredible strength: you want to accomplish the same thing with Galacta and Wiccan, two of the best cards in Marvel Snap at the moment. Sharing a common goal with these two means there is already a deck to play Doctor Doom 2099 in, and it’s a very strong one at that.

Because we already know how to support these two, Doctor Doom 2099 will naturally benefit from the same tools that allow you to play Wiccan and Galacta on Turn 3.

Quicksilver is kind of an obvious choice alongside Wiccan (and it’s the most popular 1-Cost in that deck at the moment). If we keep getting strong 4-Cost cards, that will alleviate the need to play Wiccan specifically and the energy cheating crew will just continue to gain momentum. Doctor Doom 2099 clearly pushes things in that direction.
I could have mentioned Arishem as well since the extra energy now kicks in on Turn 3, which is perfect if you want to play a 4-Cost a turn early.
It is pretty clear that playing Doctor Doom 2099 on Turn 3 shouldn’t be much of a problem if your deck is built for that goal. However, the card’s biggest challenge isn’t getting on the board quickly: it’s sticking to the “one card per turn” requirement. As such, not only do you need to get Doctor Doom 2099 out as quickly as possible, you also need to plan for what to do once it is on the board. Fortunately, Marvel Snap isn’t just The Land of the Strong 4-Cost Cards, it also is famous for its great standalone midrange tools.

There are obviously plenty more cards I could list here if the goal is to cover all the cards in the game that are strong enough to fill a turn on their own, but I’m sure you get the point. You should have enough flexibility to build a deck that is aimed at getting a 4-Cost out early, and then you adjust your play patterns to whichever 4-Cost card you played.
Still, playing only one card per turn is a big limitation for sure. Maybe Wiccan and Galacta would rather be played alongside cards that are more flexible and cheaper. But I can’t see anything about Doctor Doom 2099 that tells me the card isn’t playable alongside these two. However, if either Galacta or Wiccan were to be nerfed, it could pose a much bigger issue for Doctor Doom 2099. The biggest issue I can foresee is is this card good enough to carry a deck on its own?
That’s an important question because Doctor Doom 2099 2099 has some weaknesses that Galacta and Wiccan simply do not, such as Red Guardian, due to its low power.

Other counters Doctor Doom 2099 might want to keep in mind are Hazmat (plenty of targets with all the DoomBot 2099s), Spider-Ham (a [4/2] Pig is terrible), and Junk strategies (since they’re able to fill your board and lock you out of the game after a few DoomBot 2099s).
Another concern with Doctor Doom 2099 is the locations. Sure, the card will often be instrumental in winning certain locations that you can’t play onto, but it could just as easily lose the locations that you don’t want to play on (looking at you, Bar With No Name).
The Verdict
At the moment, the meta is perfect for Doctor Doom 2099 to make an immediate impact, which is obviously reflected in the rating I gave the new card. However, if the current strong 4-Cost cards were to be nerfed, it could be a disaster for Doctor Doom 2099.
In that scenario, the card would have to hope that its synergy with Doctor Doom is enough, or that another Good Cards type of build emerges that wants to use Doctor Doom 2099. In either case, the limitation of one card per turn would be much harder to respect.
Pre-Release Score:
Doctor Doom 2099 Decks
The new card should profit a ton from the current meta, so don’t be surprised to see a lot of familiar faces among the decks below. These are simply the best decks that Doctor Doom 2099 seems to make sense in.
In all these decks, Doctor Doom 2099 serves the exact same role: come down on Turn 3 or 4 and allow one big card per turn to be enough to win the game.
At the moment, I’m not sure if it is safe to build a deck entirely based on the card, especially because I don’t see a strong enough synergy to build around Doctor Doom 2099. With that said, the current Galacta and Wiccan decks are more than good enough to represent a first home to test the card in. Lockdown and Arishem could also make sense, as both can play Doctor Doom 2099 on Turn 3. Unfortunately, these two aren’t particularly hot at the moment.
Variants
Closing Thoughts
Doctor Doom 2099 could not release at a better time when it comes to meta structure. 4-Cost cards are the most important cards in the game right now, and several of the best decks are built around Galacta or Wiccan.
Obviously, this makes Doctor Doom 2099 slightly dependent on decks that are already quite strong, which might be nerf candidates in future balance updates. In that case, some players might regret spending resources for the new card. But, until that moment, I believe Doctor Doom 2099 more than fits the current Marvel Snap description of a strong card.
I hope this review of the new card was helpful. Feel free to share your opinions and excitement about the card in the comments. You can find everyone on the Marvel Snap Zone team in our community discord to have a chat or ask any questions.
