Hello everyone, and welcome to Top 5! I’m Glazer of Snap Judgments: The Official Marvel Snap Zone Podcast, and every week, we’ll be counting down a different Top 5 things you need to know in, around, and about Marvel Snap! Sometimes this will be silly in nature, but we’ll always have some pearls of wisdom to help make you the best (and best adjusted!) Marvel Snap player you can be! This week? The Top 5 Dan Hipp Variants and Decks for each in celebration of the Shop Takeover event!
And hey, you know me, let’s do a deck for each. But this time, as a challenge, I’ll be doing themed decks. The ground rules for this will be that 8 of the 12 cards must be on theme – four can be like a good rug and really tie the room together.
5. Silver Surfer
The Legendary den, the senior writer of Marvel Snap Zone, has chosen Silver Surfer as his favorite Dan Hipp variant – a controversial choice among the staff with Snapalytics’s LaurenWhatever going to war with the choice. Despite its controversial nature, this is the Hippiest of Hipps. It takes an already simple design and pulls it down to its bare minimum of line work with amazing colors to make the figure pop when it can often look plain. This may be a love-it-or-hate-it kind of card, but for those who love it, it’s the most radical Surfer around.
4. Leech
You may not know wetbranches, but we all do – he’s the main editor of Marvel Snap Zone, the man who makes all of our work look so good… mostly by deleting my abundant nonsense. And after all, what is abundant nonsense but abilities on cards that can be taken out by our resident little green man Leech?
Of course, wetbranches denies any such connection; he just loves how happy Leech looks. And, in fairness, Leech is glowing with excitement here, which is further emphasized by the bright background and his image running out of the card in joy, ready to take away all the fun from Marvel Snap.
3. Master Mold
Deck guide writer extraordinaire Bohe is all about that chunky purple Sentinel-maker Master Mold. I really enjoy how this card takes up basically the entire frame; it’s far thicker than almost any other card, especially any other Hipp card. That allows this card to give the impression that it’s huge, which is fitting for a giant machine that makes other giant machines.
My favorite part of this card? Marvel Snap lacks really great facial hair for the most part, but Daddy Sentinel here has an absolutely hilarious (you know, for a killer robot) mechanical mustache.
2. Spider-Ham
Spider-Ham eating a hot dog is low-hanging fruit, but LaurenWhatever and Dan Hipp are not above the cheap laugh. That’s absolutely perfect for a “cheap joke” cartoon character like Spider-Ham. Famously voiced by John Mulaney in the Spider-Verse films, this prominent pig is eating his porky brethren. But he’s so cute and cartoony that it doesn’t even matter how he eats through his mask.
I think my favorite detail here is that he’s web-slinging, seen both by his hand motion and the condiments flying in the background.
1. Zabu
This one is my favorite and most-wanted variant. I check the shop for it every single night, hope in my heart, just to have that hope (thus far) be dashed.
It’s an adorable orange kitty, just like my own, with big old yellow eyes. I know he’s supposed to be angry and pouncing, but, if he is, it’s out of an Amazon box or something. It’s just as likely that he’s digging his claws into the rug to get a nice stretch.
This is not only the best Dan Hipp variant, but also the cuddliest Marvel Snap card.
0. Mobius M Mobius
Kirallas came in from the top rope late with this killer variant that comes out next week. Cartoon grandpa Owen Wilson looking at danger during an explosion and making the O-face is just Tier 1 art. He’s even got the old-timey grandpa suit. This is easily a top five variant right here…
But then you add in the Vote Loki sticker? A+. Alligator Loki just gleefully on his shoulder? The scale is broken.
Wrap Up
That’s it for me this week. Keep it here on Marvel Snap Zone for the best Snap Content, check out my YouTube where daily videos will still be uploaded, and I’ll see you all next week!
