In this week’s Marvel Snap Spotlight Cache rotation, Thaddeus Ross headlines as the latest Series 5 card. Blink also makes its first Spotlight appearance since her debut as a Season Pass card in May 2024, and Nebula is making yet another round in the Spotlight rotation.

Thaddeus Thunderbolt Ross

Snap’s newest card launching this week is Thaddeus Ross! He is a 2-Cost, 2-Power card with the ability “When your opponent ends a turn with unspent Energy, draw a card with 10 or more Power.” To avoid confusion, this draws directly from your deck. It doesn’t generate a 10 Power card, so you have to have a 10 Power card in your deck for Thaddeus to draw it.

This card clearly pairs with Skaar to help you draw your Skaar by Turn 6 or to put Red Hulk in your hand as soon as possible, but this ability could be incredibly strong for a number of other decks too. Drawing a card and thinning your deck is a rare ability for Snap since the the deck size is so small. Having a 2-Cost card that could thin your deck could be incredibly strong. While you don’t have direct control over making your opponent skip energy, Red Hulk has taught us that it will naturally happen quite a lot. So how do you utilize this ability?

Of course the meta deck should be with Skaar. Having a utility card that could make your deck even more consistent is incredibly strong. Skaar decks have the first two or three turns to prep the board before they start playing 10 Power cards, so Thaddeus Ross has a clear opportunity to be played in that window. Paired with Zabu, he can really help you pull those discounted cards and potentially play them on curve.

Your core cards here are Skaar, Surtur, Armor, and Cosmo. You don’t have to have any other specific 10 Power cards to make this deck work. You just need a handful of cards that reach 10 Power to enable Skaar and Surtur. Armor and Cosmo will protect your cards from Shang-Chi, and Cosmo can also protect your Thaddeus from a Red Guardian. Ares isn’t required for this deck, but he does make Thaddeus Ross more likely to pull Skaar without lowering your 10 Power card count.

Low CL Decks

Believe it or not, low CL players (only Series 1 and 2 cards) only have access to three cards with 10+ Power: Hulk, Heimdall, and The Infinaut. That isn’t enough to warrant using Thaddeus Ross in your deck. I think Thaddeus is an easy pass for low CL players until you own more 10 Power cards that can actually give you draw capabilities.

This Thanos Destroy deck is a fun off-meta pick. With Thaddeus Ross, you can increase the chance that you draw your Death, Skaar, and Attuma. The deck has lots of draw options to thin your deck, including four of the Infinity Stones, King Eitri, and Thaddeus Ross. This should help the deck’s consistency and allow you to draw all of your finishers.

The only cards I would consider cutting here are King Eitri, Cull Obsidian, and Skaar. Each of these obviously benefit the deck, but if you are missing cards you can replace them with cards like Deathlok, Mockingbird, and Crossbones.

Thaddeus Ross Prediction

I think it’s clear that Thaddeus Ross has potential, but there are a couple of important things to keep in mind: when asked if the devs would add more card draw abilities, Glenn stated “offering just isn’t something we’re interested in doing… but things like ‘When you (do tricky thing), draw a card’ aren’t totally off the table.” I bring this up because the developers consider this ability tricky to do since they are releasing it, so it’s important to remember you won’t be drawing a bunch of cards since you can’t control your opponent’s energy usage.

Thaddeus Ross also has a very big counter: Cassandra Nova. Taking just one point of power off the cards in your deck will ruin most Skaar decks. If Thaddeus sees a lot of play, Cassandra Nova will directly counter him since the cards you are likely to run have exactly 10 Power.

These issues don’t kill the card’s viability, but it’s important to highlight that this card isn’t a draw machine. Even still, drawing only one card can make the difference if it’s your Skaar, Death, Red Hulk, or whatever card you need that would otherwise be at the bottom of your deck. For that reason, I think this card will definitely find a couple of homes and be worth picking up. You won’t necessarily get value every game, but it can increase your consistency.

Blink

Blink has found several homes across the meta since her release as a Season Pass card. She primarily sees use in Hela decks as a way to dig through your deck to find Hela if you don’t draw her. In most decks, Blink is a unique utility card that lets you essentially upgrade a card after you’ve used its benefit. From the Hela example, you may use Lady Sif or Gambit for a discard, but after their ability resolves you have no use for them besides points. Blink allows you to swap these cards out for a new ability with a guaranteed higher Cost (if there’s still one in your deck).

This is a more recent deck that utilizes Blink‘s capabilities. The shell is an Ajax list with some Iron Patriot flair. Blink can be used in a number of ways with the primary goal of making sure Ajax hits the board. Since he is the only other 5-Cost besides Blink, it’s a guaranteed pull if you swap out a 4-Cost like Malekith.

The core of the deck is obviously Ajax and the negative Power-afflicting cards. This includes Hazmat, U.S. Agent, Man-Thing, and Luke Cage. Red Guardian is a debatable core card since he is your only real offensive tech card that can also give negative Power. Malekith really helps the deck be more consistent, which makes him another debatable core card.

Replaceable cards include Iron Patriot, Gladiator, Hydra Bob, and Anti-Venom. A potential replacement could be Mystique to copy your Ajax, U.S. Agent, or Man-Thing. You could also use Iron Lad to double up on effects, Cosmo to protect key cards, Juggernaut to force cards away from “safe” locations, or Zabu to discount your strong 4-Cost cards.

Overall, Blink is a solid card with a unique ability. She doesn’t really have any replacements that can do what she does, which makes her much more valuable. I would consider her a very solid card to own, bordering on a mandatory recommendation since she has no replacement. Simply put, it’s a great pickup this week!

Nebula

Nebula is no stranger to the Spotlight rotation, and she has seen quite a range of decks over time. Currently she sees play in decks like Scream Move, High Evolutionary, Clog, and, most notably, Ongoing Doom 2099.

Doctor Doom 2099 requires you to play only one card per turn, so getting passive Power through cards like Nebula can really help you keep a good Power spread. If you get a mirror match, that holds especially true. You can pair Nebula with Rocket and Groot to get a guaranteed +2 Power each turn. This specific list mixes in a Scream Move package to help you grow Power in multiple locations and manipulate the board.

This deck is really a mashup of multiple decks, so your core cards will vary based on your goals. Sticking with the Doom 2099 plan, you mainly want Doctor Doom, Sandman, and Rocket and Groot. This gives you a lot of Power, ways to access restricted locations easily, and a good counter to Bounce decks.

Good replacement cards are Blue Marvel, Zabu, Iron Lad, Psylocke, and Onslaught. If you drop the Scream Move package, these cards are great replacements to help you build out a direct Doctor Doom 2099 list. Good Move card replacements (besides Scream) are Stegron, Juggernaut, and Miles Morales.

Nebula is a good card that rises and falls in popularity based on the current meta. Right now, she is in a decent place, but she isn’t required to make any decks good. She is unique, but definitely replaceable as a 1-Cost if your deck just wants Power. If you don’t own this card yet, I would say she’s worth picking up.

Spotlight Variants

If you already own the cards the Spotlight Caches offer, one of the variants below will take its place! If you own none of the cards, the variants will appear after you open all four caches. Spotlight Variants are time exclusive to their release week and will not be available again until further notice.

If any of these Spotlight Variants feel like a must have for you, make sure to Cache In if you have enough caches saved to guarantee the pull!

Should I Cache In?

My recommendation this week is to Hoard Your Caches! I initially rated this as a cache in, but a few factors have made me change my rating, which I try not to do. Nebula was just announced to be getting a Series Drop in March. Essentially this means pulling her in the cache means you are spending keys on an upcoming free card. This hurts the week’s value for any player (unless the Spotlight Variant is desired).

With the latest OTA, Surtur was nerfed, and with it, Surtur Skaar decks that Thaddeus belonged to. Thaddeus Ross was also already proving to be a bit lackluster to draw cards with, but now Adam Warlock just got a huge buff that replaces the need for Thaddeus in this deck. I didn’t have early information that Nebula was going to Series 3 or news about the OTA, so my initial rating of Cache In seemed more warranted at the time. Now though, this is a bad cache except for Blink.

Rating: 1 out of 5.
