Spotlight Cache Week of August 8, 2023: Are Spider-Ham, Galactus, and Nimrod Worth It?
Table of Contents
Welcome back to our new weekly series Cache-ing In! Each week, we break down what cards will be available in the new Spotlight Caches, as well as the Spotlight Variants! The goal is to help you determine if you should “Cache in” for the content, or hoard for a better week.
This week, there is no new card in the cache. Instead, we get 3 cards that have already been out while the new card is available in the August 2023 Season Pass. The featured cards this week are Spider-Ham, Galactus, and Nimrod.
Spider-Ham
Spider-Ham was one of the best card releases of the Spider-Versus season. So good, in fact, that he became one of the fastest nerfed cards in the game! Even now as a 2/2, this card is still extremely powerful. His effect can single-handedly stop your opponent from using a key card in their deck. I’m sure everyone has had their Iron Man, Taskmaster or Darkhawk turned into a worthless 0 power Pig at some point, or their Death become unplayable as a 7 cost Pig. All of that to say this card can still be incredibly powerful even after his nerf.
There are a few decks that are interested in Spider-Ham. One such deck is Darkhawk decks. While the deck doesn’t mandate Spider-Ham, it is a strong card that aims to negate your opponent’s big card while giving them rocks to draw at the same time. He also sees play in Lockjaw, Bounce, and even Cerebro 2! Spider-Ham is just a great 2-Drop that you will find yourself using frequently when picking cards for your deck.
Overall, I think it’s safe to say we all know how potent this card can be. Even if you aren’t into playing meta decks, this card definitely competes with Jeff as one of the strongest 2-Drops in the game. If you don’t already own this card, it is definitely worth adding to your collection.
Galactus

As our last featured Big Bad for a while, this week we see the most controversial card in the game, Galactus. While his dominant presence in the meta has subsided with his nerfs, he still remains competitive and has even made tournament winning decks lately! His ability to completely remove 2 locations has been a hot debate over if that ability is too strong or not. After his latest nerf, these debates have simmered quite a bit, but they still resurface once the card starts performing well again.
The decks you can use Galactus in are not very diverse, but there are 2 common versions you will see. Turn 6 Galactus aims to use cards like Green Goblin or Hobgoblin to lower a lanes power to trigger Galactus, and uses Nimrod and Shuri to make the final power of the lane able to secure the win. Is also uses Destroyer as an Turn 6 mix-up.
The other deck Galactus sees play in aims to play Galactus on turn 4 using Wave, or on Turn 5 using Electro. The goal of this deck is to use cards like Doctor Octopus to make your opponent dump a bunch of power in a sacrifice lane, then to play Galactus to make your Knull grow and your Death to become a zero cost. The mix-up play is to play Galactus on 4, and use Spiderman on turn 5 to lock your opponent from playing their final turn.
The largest drawback of this deck is that it has a low Cube gain rate as your opponent’s are unlikely to stay for the final turn once Galactus triggers. Even with a low cube rate, Galactus decks have a unique playstyle that still hold their ground in the competitive scene.
Nimrod

Nimrod is one of the many Season Pass cards of the past that will be featured this month. Though this card did see a buff lately, it hasn’t seen much play outside of 2 decks that want to use him. The card can be really strong, but often relies on other cards drawn when you need them in order to be as effective as you want.
The first deck is the same Galactus deck mentioned previously. The second deck is a destroy deck that aims to pop off on the final turn. Your goal is to prime the board with destroy targets like Nova, Wolverine, Winter Soldier, and of course Shuri plus Nimrod. On the final turn, you use 2 destroy cards like Carnage, Deathlok, or Venom to trigger 2 Nimrod destroys and your early turn setup. This can lead to massive power swings on the final turn. Your only big weakness is to a Cosmo or Armor blocking your turn 6 destroys.
The Variants
If you already own the card the Spotlight cache offers, one of these variants will take it’s place! If you own none of the cards, the variants will appear after you open all 4 caches. Spotlight variants are time exclusive to their release week, with no estimated time on when they will be available again. So if any of these Spotlight variants feel like a must have for you, make sure to Cache In if you have enough caches saved to guarantee the pull.
This Spider-Ham variant comes from fan-favorite Rian Gonzalez! If you are a fan of their art style, this might be a must have addition!
Kim Jacinto launches their Galactus variant this week! Being another widely recognized artist in Snap, this variant will definitely be sought after.
This Nimrod variant comes as a art debut for artist ADIA. Being their first variant, it definitely is one of the more standout variants of this week.
Should I Cache In?
This week is one that I would like to call a catchup week. There aren’t any new cards being featured, so you only want to open Caches if you have skipped a season pass or haven’t already picked up older cards.
My recommendation this week is to Hoard Your Caches. The simple fact is that this week doesn’t hold enough value to warrant opening 4 caches. Each of these cards are fun to own, but definitely not required to stay meta. The fact that Spider-Ham is a Series 4 card makes him more obtainable in the Token Shop and not a necessity to open in a Cache.
If you have been sitting on Caches and down own any of the cards, you may Cache In this week to catch up on past content to unlock some unique card mechanics. However, seeing how strong some of this season’s new cards are and next month’s data mined cards, I think your Caches are better spent unlocking the newer content coming up than these older cards since they aren’t meta defining.

Love the Galactus/SH variants, but opening them probably means missing new cards in the future, so I will have to pass. Like most things under the new system, that feels pretty bad.
I REALLY want Nimrod, buy I have Ham (don’t love the variant) and Galactus (variant is decent). I’m very torn this week.
I tried to save my spotlight caches but when I went to hold onto my second one the one I had, acted as if I had already opened it and still says I only have one spotlight being held.
