Best Moonstone Decks to Try on Day 1 and Strategy Guide

Moonstone enters the Marvel Snap arena! Read about the new Series 5 card's strengths and weaknesses and find some decks to try it out in here!

Moonstone is the next Series 5 card joining Marvel Snap for the January 2025 season, Dark Avengers. It is a 4-Cost, 6 Power card that reads: Ongoing: Has the Ongoing effects of your 1, 2, and 3-Cost cards here.

Today, we will take a deeper look at the new card and, of course, the best decks to try it out in.

Series 5 cards can be purchased for 6,000 Collector’s Tokens from the Token Shop initially as a Weekly Spotlight card, or opened as one of the featured cards in the Spotlight Caches that are found every 120 Levels on the Collection Level Track after Collection Level 500 (until the next new card releases the following week).

Strengths and Weaknesses

What I like most about Moonstone is the fact that you can play her before or after the Ongoing cards you want to copy. That makes the card very flexible compared to cards like Mystique, Taskmaster, and other On Reveal cards that you are forced to play after the target. Immediately, the play pattern that comes to mind is Cosmo on Turn 3 into Moonstone on Turn 4, and then you have two spots left for any cheap Ongoing cards with abilities you cant to duplicate.

Here are some of those strong Ongoing abilities you might wish to copy:

Captain America, Ant Man, and other cards that create points on a specific location would be good to copy as well, but I believe Moonstone will shine when it comes to spreading power across the board. I expect the trio of Victoria Hand, Cerebro, and Patriot to be great options to look into with Moonstone. Mister Fantastic is a cute option as well since a bonus four power can be significant, especially for locations that are difficult to reach.

Two cards that also have my curiosity are Ravonna Renslayer and Quinjet because everyone knows how good it can be when energy cheats get out of line.

Now, let’s talk about the duo that could make Moonstone push past all the limitations written on the card:

Since they’re both 3-Cost cards, Mystique and Rogue kind of break Moonstone‘s limitation by allowing her to copy basically any Ongoing ability that these two might catch.

Plus, Moonstone is a 4-Cost and Mystique a 3-Cost, so you can easily play Moonstone into any 5-Cost and follow it with Mystique to copy it in addition to another card. This takes Cosmo out of the equation for protective purposes since you can’t play Mystique behind the doggo, but that almost doesn’t matter because Moonstone becomes much scarier all of a sudden.

Unless you run Magik and make more of a gimmick deck, 6-Costs should be difficult to leverage in this scenario. However, there’s no limitation against more 4-Cost cards. Super-Skrull and Ms. Marvel ain’t too bad to duplicate either!

Of course, I have to add the usual disclaimer whenever a shiny new Ongoing card releases, so let’s jump into it. I already discussed Rogue, but there are two other cards that need your attention:

Enchantress will always be the primary threat to any Ongoing deck, with Red Guardian following close behind (since the card can be played in basically any deck currently). These two are the reason I believe Cosmo should be kept close to Moonstone; otherwise, I’m afraid you would telegraph your plan too much.

This is where Echo can become quite an issue since the card doesn’t care about Cosmo. If you play Moonstone before the Ongoing cards you want to copy, you basically tell your opponent where they should play Echo. This could open up some fun bluff patterns once you know your opponent is running some form of counter card, though. It might be fun to entice them to play on Moonstone‘s lane while you safely play your important Ongoing cards somewhere else.

The Verdict

Moonstone has plenty of solid cards to synergize with, and she can easily become a double-digit contributor to your points total. Plus, the card can look extremely dangerous from the opponent’s perspective. Anyone could play Moonstone first and present a real threat heading into the last turn since you would have to guess which Ongoing cards might come down behind Moonstone.

There are obvious threats to be mindful of, but Moonstone looks like a great addition to the Ongoing synergy (at least for the ones with cheaper cards).

If you’re looking for less gimmick and more flexibility, Victoria Hand works very well in the Good Cards shell and Moonstone can join her there. You’ll have a decent amount of targets with Ant Man and the Pymparticle Arrow from Kate Bishop as well. You can even throw Rogue in there for good measure.

Closing Thoughts

Victoria Hand has already solidified her spot in the meta, and cards like Ant Man and Mystique have always been relevant. This gives us a few obvious pairings to get started with Moonstone. As such, I expect the new 4-Cost will find a way to be playable, even if I don’t expect it to be on Galacta‘s or Wiccan‘s level.

However, this last part might change with the OTA releasing shortly after Moonstone. If any of the current strong meta contenders gets nerfed, Moonstone could have even more space to exist. If in doubt, you might want to wait a few days to see the OTA’s impact before pulling the trigger on Moonstone.

I hope this review of the new card was helpful. Feel free to share your opinions and excitement about the card in the comments. You can find everyone on the Marvel Snap Zone team in our community discord to have a chat or ask any questions.
