Overview

I love the discard synergy, so I’m naturally hyped to enter the Black Order season in February. Even the non-discard cards are looking pretty good to be honest; Black Swan and Supergiant are already poised to make an impact on week one. Both cards will open some very interesting lines of play. Black Swan helps some decks adopt a more combo oriented play style, and Supergiant might become the next big disruptive card.

To me, the card to keep an eye on is Corvus Glaive. Extra energy is just too good to ignore when a card with that ability attached to it is released. I’m not entirely sure where the card will end up, but it is a very promising one for sure.

Cull Obsidian and Proxima Midnight feel like more targeted abilities, so their success should be should be tied to that of the deck they are included in. Thanos Lockjaw is already in a great spot, while Discard Dracula is a decent deck that isn’t competing among the elite decks of Marvel Snap.

I could easily see Cull Obsidian become an immediate performer, although I question whether the card is needed in Thanos Lockjaw. As for Proxima Midnight, I believe the card will be a good addition to Dracula Discard, and it will probably contribute more than Cull Obsidian will for Thanos Lockjaw.

Overall, this season is very promising. I love the theme, and I can see plenty of potential in multiple cards. We should be in for a great February in Marvel Snap!

Kazoo is Done Being a Beginner’s Deck with Black Swan

Black Swan will release as the Season Pass card on February 6, 2024 and will become available as a Series 5 card on March 5, 2024.

Please note, as stated above Black Swan will be released as a [3/5] card.

Strengths:

  • [3/5] is a solid power-to-cost ratio for a card with energy cheat attached to it (we saw what that did to Ravonna Renslayer when it got that extra power).
  • Black Swan is another way to protect your 1-Costs from Killmonger, except you get to play them for free and hide your power potential from the opponent.
  • This card opens certain combos that weren’t possible in the past. Cards like Hit Monkey, Valkyrie, Hazmat, and even Destroyer can now be played with a ton of 1-Costs before or after to maximize their abilities.

Weaknesses:

  • In order for Black Swan to be truly a force, it needs to be played on Turn 5, which requires you to plan for a 2-Cost to go alongside it or just accept going off earlier.
  • Playing too many 1-Costs in your deck and not finding Black Swan could be devastating because it probably wouldn’t function very well.

To build a deck around Black Swan, I obviously looked at the iconic archetype built around 1-Cost cards. However, I didn’t want to just slam half a dozen cheap cards with Ka-Zar, Blue Marvel, and Valkyrie. First, that deck isn’t very good, and then, even if Black Swan could make it better, I wanted something that could use Black Swan effectively instead of praying to draw it every game or leaving.

As such, I went for more of a combo-oriented approach with Black Swan giving the potential for the deck to go nuts. Indeed, if you get to copy Martyr and Titania, Black Swan allows you to develop 20 power on Turn 6 for free. That’s pretty wild.

I really like the fact that this deck can also use Black Swan on Turn 3 in order to set up a Moon Girl plus Quinjet on Turn 4. This way, you don’t expose your 1-Costs and make sure you can at least profit from the discount for Turn 5. With just that turn, it could be enough to play Blue Marvel plus Dazzler, for example, and then you still have Turn 6 to dump your cheap cards. You could also get Spectrum on both Turn 5 and Turn 6.

One thing’s for sure: Black Swan looks fun to experiment around.

Supergiant Instantly Becomes Alioth’s New Best Friend

Supergiant will release as a Series 5 card on February 6, 2024.

Strengths:

  • Some synergies (like Destroy) want to repeatedly trigger certain abilities. Supergiant prevents them from doing that for a turn, and that could stop them from playing certain cards as a result.

Weaknesses:

  • Five power is very weak for a 4-Cost card, so the ability needs to be impactful for the card to be worth it.
  • You also lose the ability to play certain cards, or you have to accept that they won’t be as impactful due to their delayed reveal.
  • If you don’t have priority going into the last turn, a lot of synergies you could exploit with Supergiant become much weaker since the opponent could have access to Alioth, Cosmo, or other such disruptive cards.

Alioth is the most obvious card to pair with Supergiant, but simply denying a lot of strong 5-Cost cards from revealing feels strong enough. In the Lockdown archetype, you can take advantage of both sides of the card.

Indeed, apart from being a pretty weak follow up to Storm (which can easily be mitigated with Ms. Marvel and/or Doctor Doom down the line), Supergiant feels perfect in an already established archetype. With the card included, you don’t have to worry about Leech removing your low power cards with great abilities on Turn 6. You also make combo decks weaker to Alioth than they were already, and high power decks won’t reveal a card to discount Skaar.

I was a little worried about the weak power attached to Supergiant, but as I think about it more I understand why.

Cull Obsidian Makes Thanos Lockjaw Stronger

Cull Obsidian will release as a Series 5 card on February 13, 2024.

Please note, as stated above Cull Obsidian will not be released as a Series 4 card.

Strengths:

  • The requirement of a 1-Cost is almost forgettable compared to what is asked from Crossbones or Attuma.
  • As a 10 power card, Cull Obsidian is perfect for enabling Skaar plus a 1-Cost on the following turn.
  • The card feels great to challenge a location on Turn 4 (such as Asgard or Flooding), or it could just seize priority going into the next turn. It could also set up Professor X on Turn 5.

Weaknesses:

  • If you play your 1-Costs early and take priority, your opponent could try using Shang-Chi to snipe Cull Obsidian since they know where you will play it.
  • A lot of decks won’t be able to play this card if they miss on their 1-Cost on Turn 1 – especially a Zabu deck that is looking to benefit from the 4-Cost cards discount.

Thanos Lockjaw obviously appears to be an ideal candidate for this card since the deck is already running both the easiest way to meet Cull Obsidian‘s requirement (the Infinity Stones) and Skaar to benefit from the discount.

Cull Obsidian feels in line with Planet Hulk’s Series 4 card Miek, as they are both specific tools with good upsides in the right situation. But, if the deck that obviously benefits from the card isn’t thriving at the right time, Cull Obsidian could be quickly considered a bust.

There are some obvious differences between Discard Dracula and Thanos Lockjaw, though, so I doubt Cull Obsidian will enter a struggling deck like Miek did. However, the right question for Cull Obsidian would be whether Thanos Lockjaw actually needs it. Indeed, you could be playing Wave, Iron Lad, Gladiator, or a tech card in that slot instead.
I believe this will be the big test Cull Obsidian will have to pass.

Who Would Turn Down Extra Energy from Corvus Glaive?

Corvus Glaive will release as a Series 5 card on February 20, 2024.

Strengths:

  • Extra energy has always opened some busted decks at some point in the history of Marvel Snap, and this time it is tied to a [3/5] card.
  • Corvus Glaive doesn’t limit you to one card the same way Electro does. The card offers much more freedom if you can work with the discard requirement.
  • Discard has somewhat of a Ramp archetype with Hela, and it has used Electro in the past.

Weaknesses:

  • Two discards can be pretty risky. Hellcow has always struggled to be considered a strong card in the synergy, even with eight power.
  • The ability is limited to the discard synergy. I believe Corvus Glaive is stronger than Electro overall, but the restriction is probably too much for a lot of decks that are currently using Electro.
  • If you Discard the wrong card, you could have no use for the extra energy afterward.

Corvus Glaive looks more like a Hela card than an Apocalypse card, although we might end up with both in a deck at some point. I wouldn’t be shocked to see Corvus Glaive in Discard Dracula, either.

At first, I think Corvus Glaive should be an easy include in the Hela Tribunal deck since you can just play it whenever Hela isn’t in hand. It would represent another way to set up for your signature card while also enabling the Iron Man, Onslaught, The Living Tribunal play pattern the deck has been known for.

I kept a similar shell to a build that is performing well at the time of writing this, but we might just shift towards more big cards rather than support cards like Sera and Iron Lad. With an extra energy, I could imagine including cards like Giganto or Blob in the deck (but this might be stronger in a Hela Lockjaw build).

Overall, I feel like the ability is simply too strong to ignore, and Corvus Glaive should be a core card to the discard synergy in the future. It might take a bit to figure out how to perfectly build around it, but an extra energy has never been a bad thing for any deck. As such, I’m confident there is a way to build something really solid around the card.

As some food for thought, you could just end up with a traditional Ramp deck with Hela included just because Corvus Glaive feels so much better than Electro.

Proxima Midnight Joins Miek to Help Discard Dracula

Proxima Midnight will release as a Series 5 card on February 27, 2024.

Please note, as stated above Proxima Midnight will be released as a [4/7] card.

Strengths:

  • A free seven power card will almost never be considered bad.
  • Discard Dracula never turns down help to reach locations it can’t play on. Paired with Miek, this should totally solve that issue for the archetype.
  • More discard targets should make Discard decks more reliable in the way they develop their strategy.

Weaknesses:

  • The card only feels attached to the Discard Dracula archetype since Hela can already summon bigger cards for virtually free.

Proxima Midnight feels more like a Discard Dracula tool than a Hela one. First, Discard Dracula needs more help reaching unplayable locations, which Proxima Midnight should do really well. When paired with Miek, the deck should have no problem with difficult-to-reach locations anymore. Then, six power isn’t that much (even if you never intend to pay for it), but Hela will probably favor Black Cat or just rely on Hela to hit the hard locations.

Overall, I’m looking at Proxima Midnight the same way I did Miek last month. It is a fine card that will certainly make an archetype stronger, but its fortune is likely tied to that archetype. And, just like Miek, it could be labelled as a bad card if Discard Dracula fails to deliver.

There is a chance that a new Discard archetype sees the light of day considering we are getting multiple cards in that direction during the month. I think something like a Discard Ramp might exist with Corvus Glaive, but I doubt Proxima Midnight would make it in that deck.

Closing Words

Supergiant and Corvus Glaive look like the cards I want to grab as soon as they release in February. I see Supergiant as a potential game changer – even with its low power – and Corvus Glaive‘s ability on a [3/5] card looks broken to me and I need to test it for myself.

As for the other three, they are a little more restrictive in terms of decks you can slot them into. Black Swan has the most flexibility to it because 1-Cost cards can be used in various ways in Marvel Snap. I would recommend Cull Obsidian and Proxima Midnight for those who enjoy the decks they obviously should be a part of.

I could see a player looking to get all the cards from this season because they all look to have certain upsides. For someone on a budget, though, I would grab Supergiant or Corvus Glaive first depending on which style of game play you enjoy the most: proactive or reactive.
