In the previous OTA, End of Turn paid for developing too many points too easily. At first, the deck disappeared, but slowly crawled its way back to a competitive status. Now, Invisible Woman First Steps and her crew are part of the flurry of solid decks available to play in Marvel Snap.
Unfortunately, most of those decks all lost to the same opponent for the past two weeks : Fenris Wolf, Gladiator, Mercury, and Cannonball. Sometimes, Negasonic Teenage Warhead also joined them, other times, it was Killmonger. We saw that package alongside Wiccan, in Mill, or simply as its own deck alongside other disruptive cards plus Death.
Then, it was only logic to nerf this synergy in order to finally open the metagame to new play-patterns.
I’m very glad to see Second Dinner go with harsh nerfs, going as far as adding some to the End of Turn synergy to make sure it doesn’t take back the crown it lost two weeks ago.
On top of that, Juggernaut, one of the game’s most popular cards, able to join almost any deck looking for a flexible 3-cost also took a beating.
Combined, these changes make me want to explore new avenues, test different decks, and believe we might end the summer with a great, diverse environment.
Obviously, there will always be better decks, but as someone who checks the stats to make Tier Lists every weekend, I’m confident a lot of decks are about to emerge.

Nerfs

One more energy doesn’t simply change the moment you can play a card, it also affects all the cards you typically played for that cost. In this case, Fenris Wolf now clashes with Gladiator or Negasonic Teenage Warhead, while it also cannot be paired with either on turn five anymore.
This is a huge change, likely bigger than the hit to the End of Turn synergy in the previous OTA.

Since Mercury released, Cannonball has been the best 5-cost in Marvel Snap. Then, this nerf is no surprise, as someone in that pair had to take the hit.
Combined with Fenris Wolf’s nerf, this should have huge consequences on the overall performances of that archetype. Yet, I feel like Cannonball should remain a decent inclusion in decks with Mercury, for example Ongoing or Clog.

Zabu might have a say in this change, but it is otherwise a great one. Juggernaut was too good at winning locations in the later turns, while it also acted as a disruptive tool against synergistic decks on top of representing a strong support to win Iron Patriot’s location.
The card will be significantly weaker as a [4/5], but once again, Zabu might help Juggernaut remain competitive.
With Fenris Wolf and his cohort taking a significant hit, there is a shot for the End of Turn synergy to come back and once again be dominant. Particularly considering this season’s cards have failed to change the structure of the metagame.
Then, this feel like a reasonable precaution, and a way to entice the community to look for new decks, rather than constantly go back to old comfort picks whenever the best one gets nerfed.
Buffs
The card was nowhere to be seen since its release. I’m not sure that we will play more of Mad Thinker as a [1/2], but it deserved it.

I don’t know how much this change will impact Nightmare, since this is still low enough to want to transform or destroy it after it revealed. Yet, the card won’t be a liability if we have to keep it on the board, so this is definitely a buff, maybe leading to a Sauron 10 Power come back.

Cards which depend on their power to trigger their ability will naturally benefit a lot more from this small buffs rather than other cards. Plus, we didn’t have much info about Silver Surfer First Steps since it is locked behind the Premium Season Pass so it is difficult to know whether this buff is warranted or not.
Worst case, the card will be very strong once we all get to access it through Snap Packs in a few days, and Second Dinner can revert it to a [3/4] if necessary.

Buff archetypes have been doing fairly well recently, with Nova Frankie Raye giving those a new payoff card to build around. America Chavez was not a staple in those decks, but should earn a new testing period at the very least.

Ghost-Spider has been one of the few Move cards able to export her services to other decks as well, which makes her a great target for a buff in my opinion.
This is still not enough to mitigate the nerfs Move received in my opinion, as payoff cards will always scale much more than a mere extra power to support cards. Still, this is another good step.
New Decks
Just like the previous one, this OTA will mostly impact the metagame with its nerfs, rather than its buffs. Indeed, the space opened by Fenris Wolf’s nerf should lead to more diversity, except if yet another archetype manages to steal the spotlight.
It might happen, as Iron Hand has been an excellent archetype for a very long time, but constantly in the shadows of the greater ones. Except for that one in particular, there is a flurry of other decks with very little games to support their performance, which is exactly what we are looking for after an OTA : Promising decks to test !
Here are plenty of builds to test following this OTA, related to the changes or not :
Yes, Fenris Wolf and his Destroy based allies were gatekeeping a lot of decks.
Closing Words
This OTA plus the new season just five days later should give us a chaotic Marvel Snap for a bit of time. Of course, certain synergies will take over eventually. Yet, the last OTA was pretty obvious to figure out, which took away most of the appeal.
This time, although I’m certain the likes of Iron Hand or Cerebro 2 will post great results, I’m not sure if they have what it takes to become dominant like End of Turn or Fenris Wolf did. Instead, I expect the pilot’s skills to play a bigger role in the upcoming metagame, at least until the aftermath of this OTA plus the new season are behind us.
That’s it for this OTA review. You can find everyone from the Marvel Snap Zone team in our community discord, alongside plenty of people to share your excitement about those changes.
Good Game Everyone!
