Young Avengers, as represented in the August 2024 Season of Marvel Snap, is one of my very favorite Marvel Comics runs ever, but did Second Dinner do these great characters justice? Let’s take a look at what Glenn Jones and crew have in store for us this August 2024 for the Young Avengers Season. And, of course, it wouldn’t be a Snap Judgments production if we didn’t give you decks. Let’s go!
Season Pass Card: Hawkeye Kate Bishop
The August Season Pass card,
The Acid Arrow, essentially a 1-cost White Widow, is going to be awesome here, allowing you to play the card with White Widow, Titania, and Green Goblin for some great clog options. PymParticle Arrow and Basic Arrow are just good, cheap power, made easily better with Zoo cards like Ka-Zar and Blue Marvel. The hardest to use is Grapple Arrow, but a [1/3] that moves a card has value, particularly with locations like White Hot Room or The Raft.
Besides Zoo, we can look to bounce and Loki as clear top-notch homes for this card. This seems so good that the only hard part for this Season Pass card will be managing hand size and figuring out just what decks don’t want this curve filler. Heck, with the card releasing in Spotlights the same week, we may have a card package to compete with Thena + Angela + Kitty Pryde.
Marvel Boy – August 6, 2024

Squirrel Girl and Marvel Boy are immediately premium stats in Marvel Snap. Those two cards on curve, for four energy, generate 18 power. That’s absurd, especially given that Marvel Boy is still 15 power if played on turn 4, which would enable extra 1s to come from Shanna or Kate Bishop Hawkeye. Marvel Boy immediately is one of the premier power packages in Marvel Snap.
We thought Gilgamesh pushed Zoo, and, yes, he really helps, but his ability to go tall is now matched by Marvel Boy, probably the best go-wide card in the game. Heck, if Marvel Boy comes out on turn 6, he’s still perfectly respectable [3/5].
Outside of Zoo, though, it’s going to be a bit strange to find a home for this card. There’s likely a place in Bounce decks, even only pumping one or tow cards, you’re pretty happy here, but the sleeper home is Mockingbird + Killmonger decks. Those can use Squirrel Girl for a cheap Mockingbird and potentially kill the 1s for a cheap Death. You’ll lose the 1s there, sure, but if Knull is in the deck, nothing is truly lost.
If you get one card in July or August, make it be Marvel Boy.
Wiccan – August 13, 2024

Wiccan is the first card (of two) with a totally new mechanic in Marvel Snap. He reads that if you spent all your energy for the game by the turn you play Wiccan. This is the first +2 energy gain in Marvel Snap, but strangely, +2 energy could serve to make your curve a bit more awkward. There’s not really a 7 cost card you want on 5 while a 6 and a 2 on turn 6 isn’t groundbreaking. With Sera, perhaps, you can really go off, but even then, your turn 5 is just so weird.
I think the only home here is a Silver Surfer deck, likely with Magik. That seems like awesome power, but it requires playing Quicksilver and Domino. Those two cards make it mathematically less likely that you see Wiccan on turn 4 or 5, and so things get complicated in terms of how to use this card.
If it works, it’ll be fantastic – we saw how powerful extra energy was for Arishem – but it’s unclear if it ever will be consistent enough to matter.
Speed – August 20, 2024

This is the second card that has the spend all of your energy cost after his twin brother, Wiccan, but while Wiccan has potential and great upside, I don’t think Speed does.
Wiccan requires you to spend all your energy by turn 4 for a 1-time effect while Speed gets an Ongoing plus 1 Power for each turn you spent all your energy. The problem is that in a 6-turn game, that gives Speed the upside of a [6/9]. That’s a ton of work for one more power than Gladiator. Perhaps there’s an Ongoing Surfer list, but if there isn’t this goes straight into the bin.
Emperor Hulkling – August 27, 2024
For a card that comes out the day after my birthday, Emperor
And this month started off so well.
Closing
That’s it for our early look at August cards. This Season starts strong, then gets progressively weaker or weirder. What cards will you be opening for this August?
