Snap Judgments Deck of the Day: The Best Sam Deck by The Stats (So far)!

Good morning all! I’m back at Marvel Snap Zone every weekday with a deck of the day: a top deck for you to try out! My aim for this article is to get you in and out quickly and give you something new to play every day along with the tools to do well with it. If you want three more new decks today, check out this video!

In my videos, I often argue for the utility of buying the Season Pass in Marvel Snap. I think that argument is especially important this month because Sam Wilson Captain America is a good card, but not a great or broken one which might lead many to skip it. I cannot urge people against that enough—the Season Pass value is through the roof. By buying it Week 1 and completing the weekend missions, you get 10x the value of any other spending in Marvel Snap. Furthermore, card acquisition can be difficult (and is often controversial). I know people that have been playing for a year and have all but 7-12 of the cards by just buying the pass and optimizing. This isn’t theory; numerous members of my community are “meta complete” with this method.

I bring this up today because today’s main deck has multiple Season Pass cards in it. Second Dinner’s philosophy on the game is to make sure these cards are meta relevant as much as possible. Heck, yesterday’s deck even had Symbiote Spider-Man. If you can afford it, get the pass.

Sam Wilson keeps finding new homes. There was a pretty severe limiting factor on Cull Obsidian and Kraven before that is now taken care of by running one card. It seems like these may be even better partners for Sam than the classic Captain America since they require less extra deckbuilding space. I still don’t love Sam, but he’s a [2/8] when played on curve and that’s a really good card. It’s in a similar tier with other really good cards like Cassandra Nova.

This is a two-deck in-one deck of the style that has increasingly risen to prominence. Silver Surfer and Galactus, Scream and Doctor Doom 2099, and so on—more Marvel Snap decks are taking the key components of two different archetypes and smashing them together. Sam Wilson Captain America seems a prime enabler for this kind of thing.

The main strategy here is the same as a Scream deck. Scream decks were, for a long time, secretly (to those who don’t watch my videos where I kept telling you) among the absolute most winning in the game. Their power comes from two things. First, they disrupt the opponent’s card placement. That messes with strategy and planning, increasing the mental load on the opponent as they need to plan and re-plan. This deck maintains that strategy but does less of it than many similar decks since it adds another package.

Luckily, Scream‘s biggest boon has always been early scaling. She gets +2 power per turn when an opponent’s card moves and gives -2 power to that card. That’s 4 power per move, meaning with a measly 2 moves Scream can represent a [2/10] (unless your opponent has Luke Cage, but he’s seemingly cycled out of the meta). Early scalers are incredibly strong, and in addition to Scream this deck gets two other really strong 2-drop scalers: Kraven and Sam Wilson Captain America.

Although these two rarely reach the heights of Scream, an extra [2/7] or [2/8] goes a long way toward winning games of Marvel Snap. Kraven even works with Scream; moving a card with Polaris or Aero onto Kraven‘s lane will trigger both. The Hunter also works with Sam Wilson: if he tosses the shield onto Kraven, that’s another +2 power. In fact, there’s even another trick I’ll get to later that really pushes Kraven to the moon.

But first, Surtur. Surtur is another early scaler, and he can, even though it doesn’t always happen, represent up to 13 power. A [3/10] is probably more likely, but a [3/7] is still right around Gladiator‘s power so Surtur is all upside here. Surtur can be played because some of the movers (Aero, Magneto, and Heimdall) have 10+ power. If you play two, there you go, Surtur is a [3/10]. The giveback here is running extra [4/10]s, which in this case are Ares and Cull Obsidian. Of course, the latter is allowed to be played with the 1-Cost card brought by Sam Wilson, which can all but guarantee (barring locations and clog) that Cull Obsidian can be played. This all works insanely well together.

Before I get to replacements, I want to call out one more synergy. If you clog with Kraven mid or right, you can end with a Heimdall. Kraven and all the cards with him will move and give him an extra +6 Power. If you had Cap's Shield going earlier, it’s easy to get an impressively large Kraven and trigger Surtur for a truly epic last-turn power and location swing.

Card Replacements

  1. Needs: Scream, Surtur, Sam Wilson
  2. Hydra Bob -> Juggernaut, Zabu
  3. Cull Obsidian or Ares can be Crossbones
