4. Lady Deathstrike – 59 Points

Even a buff from three to four power isn’t enough to save Lady Deathstrike from last place. But not just last place – she scored less than half of third place! She’s not a bad card, but even as a [5/4] she can be clunky to use. You want to double her power or use Forge to pump her up, and that might have been great when the meta was all 5-Power cards. Now, though, Absorbing Man has outgrown her for a while, and Loki decks just go way over the top of her. The best target in the game is probably Angela, but by Turn 5 Angela has often outgrown Lady Deathstrike. Cards like Shuri and Forge often lose you priority, so her best targets, frustratingly, have a habit of just outgrowing the sweet spot.

Still, she’s not all bad. The effect is powerful, and, because it’s so rare to see, no one bothers playing around it. That means that when she does work, there are huge cube gains to be had. Here’s one shell where I’ve found some success with the card.

3. Daken – 123 points

Daken and Silver Samurai were only a point apart in the standings, so they are considered all but equal as cards. That’s fair here, as Daken often plays as a [4/8]. I think the buff to Blade in the recent patch may have pushed Daken ahead of Silver Samurai, my previous favorite card of the season, since a Turn 4 play of Daken and Blade is an all-but-guaranteed 11 power. That’s not an easy combo to pull off, but simply adding Daken to Colleen Wing or Silver Samurai has proven more than viable. That’s a lot of options to play Daken for a well-above-rate power swing. I feel like the community sort of gave up on him just like they did to The Phoenix Force – but I think it’s unwarranted. He’s still a part of very powerful decks and requires almost no tricks to power spike.

TheCounterGuy has had great success with this Silver Surfer Daken list.

2. Silver Samurai – 124 points

I really love this card. The disruption of discarding the opponent’s lowest-power card is not to be overlooked. By Turn 4 or 5, that card is often extremely powerful. I’m only sad this wasn’t released during the height of Darkhawk since it’s one of the best possible counters for that deck. Iron Man, Knull, and many other cards are great hits, too, but I’ve even hit cards like Evolved Hulk and Death. Silver Samurai is great for disruption, and doubly so with cards like Zabu, Wong, and Absorbing Man.

The trick is to disrupt the opponent and benefit yourself at the same time. There are a ton of ways to do this – X-23, Wolverine, Swarm, and Daken are the obvious ones, but your own Iron Man or Darkhawk with Ghost Rider or Hela have proven surprisingly resilient.

This brilliant idea came from den – and it’s my new favorite way to play the card.

1. X-23 – 154 points

X-23 is in first place here not just because it’s powerful, but because if you see it early and your opponent doesn’t have a counter, it’s extremely abusable. Destroy decks can often kill it multiple times, setting up huge early energy spikes. It’s never been easier to Arnim Zola a Knull or get a Deadpool and Knull out on the same turn. Even more, X-23 smooths out your curve for those Deadpool decks by making sure you have the extra energy to play and destroy the namesake card.

On Turn 5, X-23 is often backbreaking. A Carnage on X-23 into Killmonger is worth five energy and, often, many destroys, and it leaves you with eight energy on the last turn. That means Wave cannot hard counter you, and the last turn of the game can still be Deadpool and Knull or Death and Knull or pretty much whatever you want.

X-23 has also given Galactus a new power spike. While it’s dangerous (and Galactus is still best as a late-game surprise), X-23 can open up the Turn 4 Nimrod AND Turn 5 Galactus without the need for Electro.

Of course, X-23 is also excellent in discard or semi-discard shells. The hard discard decks aren’t sad to have a way to cheat out their cards early, and the aforementioned Silver Samurai will often become a 7-Power card with X-23 that also grants an extra energy.

There are a lot of powerful ways to play the card, and that’s ultimately what makes it #1 for the majority of our queried creators.
