Will we be correct in our assessments?

5. Corvus Glaive – 151 points

Corvus Glaive is in last place, but only barely, as there is less separation and agreement than ever on the cards this month. Glaive, however, acquired only one first-place vote. from Combat Snap.

Glaive can be good in standard discard, where he’s functionally a better Hellcow, and he may have a home in especially bold Hela decks – playing two 6-cost cards can just in the game when you don’t draw Hela, but his real draw is that he may birth a new archetype – Discard good stuff.

With Corvus providing ramp and a strong 3-5 body, Wolverine, Swarm, Daken‘s Muramasa Shard, Apocalypse, and the new Proxima Midnight (see below), that’s 5 cards that want to be discarded, 6 if you count Helicarrier. Glaive, Morbius, Miek, and maybe The Collector pay you off for discarding. There’s likely something good here!

  • I don’t think Corvus will be efficient, but I hope I’m wrong. – NiTheal
  • Seems like the effect is nuts. Can’t wait to try it with Swarm/ Hit-Monkey – LilRobitussin
  • Strong effect but what does Discard need +1 Max Energy for? Maybe I’m missing the point but random discard, too. I’ll pass! – Macdonalinho
  • Corvus is the card in the most excited for, but that’s because I love RNG and chaos in my decks. – FaThorNewman
  • Corvus Glaive is acting as an Electro for Discard which is great – ZalSnap
  • I have a Corvus & Proxima deck ready to go that will be one of the most fun decks ever and extremely unpredictable to play against. – Monroe Bieler
  • Curious to see if we end up with a ramp/discard hybrid with this. – Mottelz
  • A better Hell Cow that’s gonna open some new doors in discard decks – Lufku9
  • Cool power, bro. You know what Discard never runs? Electro. Why does Discard care about having extra energy? Is MODOK on 4 amazing? I haven’t seen Discard play Wave, either. Granted, in many ways he’s basically a better Hellcow. He’s playable, I just don’t see why Discard wants extra energy. – LaurenWhatevs
  • Free mana is best mana – Combat as #1
  • This was a tough between him and Black Swan, but discard or discard tricks are getting a big boost with energy ramp. Energy ramp is always good. – BitTwiddle

4. Cull Obsidian – 155 points

[4/10] is a great stat line. That’s Darkhawk after a Rockslide. That’s Sentry without the need to get rid of voice. That’s Typhoid Mary but I don’t need Sauron or Enchantress. It’s just better than Crossbones or Evolved Thing or…You get the idea.

Hey, though, you need to play a one-cost card, so we can call Cull a 5-drop (he’s not – Zabu and the split cost both matter). Most one-cost cards are about two power, so if he were a 5, he’s a [5/12]-ish. Well, the only 5-cost cards bigger than that are Devil Dinosaur, Ronan the Accuser, and Red Skull, all of which require more work to make good.

Thanos lists love this – he’s great for Blob or when you miss ramp and you have plenty of one-cost cards. Bounce is pretty thrilled, too. Evolutionary gets an upgrade on The Thing. Hell, I wouldn’t be shocked if he were to become a staple in a ton of decks to the level of a card like Iron Lad.

If you prize filling out a lot of decks, this will be the card for you.

  • Might have the bigger impact because it has a strong deck and is easy to understand, so I’m gonna look stupid for ranking it so low. However, pretty sure it isn’t necessary to have it to perform. – Den as #5
  • Is it just me or does this just change the way you build every single deck. – Safetyblade
  • I really hope this makes either Zabu Zoo or some form of Zabu Zero + Skaar deck good. – Teebs
  • Cull is Boring. – Roy Rogers
  • This card provides the most consistency out of the five cards this month. For 4/10, Cull’s effect isn’t difficult. Yeah, yeah, yeah, it can be Shang’d, but so can every other 10+ power card. Skaar, Zabu, Armor, and Cosmo are the big synergies, with a 1 on curve or on 4 with him after Zabu. – Soopadoopaben
  • Don’t get me wrong. February last place doesn’t mean Cull Obsidian is a bad card. With the last update on the card being a 4/10, this card seems better, even with Shang-Chi in the vicinities. With Zabu is technically a 3/10, and Caiera is always there to protect the trucks. With Skaar in the same deck, new iterations of old decks like Zerocula, or new iterations of meta-decks like Shuri Sauron can have a new toy to work with. – Bohe
  • A 4/10 with a lighter restriction than Crossbones and Sentry. This monstrosity has power creep written all over it. – Docty as #1

3. Proxima Midnight – 167

In decks that want her, she’s a [0/7]. That’s by far the best rate in the game, and she may single-handedly bring Discard back into the meta. Cull and Proxima are very straightforward stats cards and, well, in Marvel Snap, you ultimately win lanes by bigger numbers. That she goes into a lane where you have the least power is a downside, but at least Dracula being 1 power now gives her some protection. She’s basically guaranteed to be good.

The only (small) issue, is she’s likely married to MODOK, as he’s the only way to guarantee that she’s discarded. Still, turning MODOK into a crazy power play – 15 with just Proxima, seems like it’s probably pretty damn strong for Discard.

Will it be meta again? That remains to be seen. But it’s definitely going to be better than prior to Proxima’s release.

  • I truly believe the husband and wife combo takes discard, and especially Hela to another level! – BigOldBuck
  • 7 power for free is a choice, Second Dinner. – W
  • Proxima Midnight is definitely number one for me because having her on the board immediately after her discard can sway the game into her discarder’s favor earlier than usual as would be done with Hela currently! – Shneerp
  • She contributes 7 power, seeks out inaccessible locations, costs less than nothing, and her big downside is that you might accidentally seize priority. – Benjamin Roller
  • Proxima Midnight is ridiculous. 0-7 shouldn’t exist while Stature is 6.- Shuri Enjoyer
  • Basically a bigger Wolverine in discard decks. Easy to proc. – Devilish
  • Proxima Midnight will create a new archetype of discard that does not bother caring about what goes to the bin and just focuses on good cards that synergize well. – GunnyT
  • Sounds really strong to have a free 7-power card. Just make sure it doesn’t drop in the Dracula lane! – Sizer

2. Black Swan – 204

The reason for this card’s high ranking is simple: Cost Reduction. Whether it be Sera, Zabu, Beast, or Quinjet, cost reduction is essentially always eventually broken wide open in Marvel Snap. Black Swan is cost-reduction similar to those cards, even if limited to only one turn. With that the case, it’s difficult to expect much less of Black Swan.

For much of the voting, Swan was neck and neck with Supergiant, but eventually, the giant woman pulled ahead by a bit. Still, Black Swan has, in less than a day as of this writing, proven a versatile and powerful card in a variety of shells from bounce to Thanos to Silver Surfer and Zoo.

  • This card would be better if it didn’t release alongside Supergiant due to its ability on turn 5 to set up a large hit monkey for turn 6. This will be a strong card in non-Lockjaw Thanos, allowing you to play a 3/5 and then continue to curve out whilst also dumping any stones in hand similar to old Quinjet. Whether Lockjaw Thanos can fit this card in or whether it’s needed is something that requires testing once she releases. – EliteXHassa
  • Lastly is Black Swan. This one seems meh to me. If it affected higher-cost cards, she may be good but the week she is released Killmonger will be everywhere. So her place will be a Ka-zaar into her on 5 to drop a bunch of 1s for free on 6 but I’m not sure if that’s worth it – DefaultDan
  • Black Swan is going to be another Bishop/Hit Monkey enabler! She is going to be the reason Mobius comes back!! – Tuccrr
  • Energy cheat go brr. – Interrobang
  • This will put Hit Monkey stocks through the roof. Not to mention all the other cool things you can do with 0 cost 1-cost cards on the final turn will be awesome to see and more importantly, fun! I feel a nerf will come sooner than later.- SuperTechGod
  • I do feel it’s odd that they are releasing Supergiant the same week as Black Swan… I feel like SG is going to be a pretty huge counter to Black Swan. We might not get to see Black Swan really shine until the SG hype dies down a bit. – KKSparkles
  • Biche, but can be good because of her stats even if the ability isn’t maxed out for efficiency. – JollyRoger
  • Black Swan is going to make Sandman the most-played card in February. – PeacefulSea
  • Swan would be #1 if it was a 2/3 – Bradcifer as #2
  • It’s a great thing when the Season Pass is a strong card… Yet still the weakest of five. – Guest
  • This card lets one drops thrive with the element of surprise – Prashaun

1. Supergiant – 219

Supergiant was absolutely polarizing with far more last-place votes than any card that previously finished #1. Still, the insane potential to turn off some of the strongest plays in the game from the best decks.

She destroys meta mainstays like Leech and Sera along with newer meta threats like Annihilus or Jane Foster Mighty Thor (to get Stormbreaker for Beta Ray Bill). While players may eventually get used to this and be able to play around it, Supergiant is still a meta-warping card that changes the game by virtue of its presence.

All of this is without even considering its offensive uses. Supergiant can set up Alioth or gigantic Hela combos. Both of those decks are looking meta with the potential for far more as further experimentation occurs.

  • Leech, MODOK, Sera, Jane Foster… (Alioth Friend) – Ramekiao
  • Supergiant is going to be absolutely insane for setting up Alioth plays! – Comixfan
  • Game warping effect! Will change the meta. – Minh
  • The next overhyped card. Terrible on ladder, great for Conquest. – Drewberry
  • Will be broken! Bye bye, Leeeeeeech! – KingofCanada
  • Supergiant has insane disruption potential. You’re playing Sera Control? Not anymore! Even the new season pass card Black Swan will get stuffed if you were hoping for a big turn-six pop off. The only thing holding her back is the stat line which isn’t bad, it’s just not premium. That’s why she’s number one. – Phil Woodward
  • The funny thing about Supergiant is that she can function not only as a protector vs the opponent’s Leech or Sera, but also as a substitute for Invisible Woman, for example, in a Hela Tribunal deck, where revealing Hela into MODOK can become very unexpected. – Kirallas
  • Super Giant will be the first card to exist that can hard-counter Leech. Need we say more? – GamingwithFlashX
  • New form of “negation” effect. Meta shifter. – Lamby
  • Problematic for some decks – Owi
  • Super Giant in particular looks slept on to me, as many of the strongest decks right now (Sera, Annihilus, Leech-Hawk, Hela) rely mostly on their turn 5 to facilitate their win con. – YoWoodyMJ
  • Hello, Jean Grey into Alioth! Or denying Sera players, Leech players, slowing down destroy, or just protecting something that always goes down to control like Devil Dinosaur or Darkhawk. Yeah, this is the best card this season. – TeddyNinja
