Welcome back to our new weekly series Cache-ing In! Each week, we break down what cards will be available in the new Spotlight Caches, as well as the Spotlight Variants! The goal is to help you determine if you should “Cache in” for the content, or hoard for a better week.

Pixie

Kicking off this Avengers vs. X-Men Season is the new card Pixie from team X-Men! She is a 2-Cost, 1-Power card with the ability “On Reveal: Shuffle the Costs of all cards in your deck that started there.” This is one of the most deck-warping effects we’ve seen in quite some time. Her deckbuilding requirements are simply to have a healthy amount of low-cost and high-cost cards in your deck so she can swap stats effectively.

One important note about Pixie: Her effect says shuffle the costs, which means the cards in your deck aren’t going to get a random cost assigned. They will instead swap costs with another card in your deck. Developer Glenn confirmed that cards of the same cost can swap with each other. So if you have two 6-Cost cards (like Magneto and Doctor Doom), they have the potential of shuffling their power to the other 6-Cost card.

For example, in context of a draw pile with Magneto, Doctor Doom, Iron Lad, and Jeff the Baby Land Shark: Magneto could take Jeff’s 2-Cost, Jeff could take Iron Lad‘s 4-Cost, Iron Lad could take Doctor Doom‘s 6-Cost, and Doctor Doom could take Magneto‘s 6-Cost.

**Edit: Additionally, cards can swap to their own costs. Developer Glenn describes this like putting all of the costs in a bag and putting them back on cards randomly. This means a card could have no change because it swapped with itself.

With this in mind, not every use of Pixie will result in wacky costs on your cards. Mobius M. Mobius may be borderline required for decks with Pixie so that your cards that get higher costs can still be played for their original cost, while your big cards become cheaper. One such example of this is a High Evolutionary deck. This deck wants to swap your low cost cards (Wasp, Sunspot, Nebula, and Misty Knight) with your big cards (She-Hulk, Hulk, The Infinaut, and Leech).

In my opinion, you don’t want to run Magik in decks with Pixie because you give your opponent a chance to catch up to your big power plays. Pixie is meant to help you drop big power at a quicker and more cost effective rate, so extending the game defeats this purpose. With swapped costs, you can float Energy between turns to grow Sunspot and Hulk, while also triggering Misty Knight and Cyclops.

For a more wacky take on Pixie‘s capabilities, check out this deck. You know that weird Adam Warlock change Second Dinner made in the last OTA Balance Updates? Well now that he has Power, you can swap his Cost to make him a possible [0/4] that draws cards each turn in this deck.

The idea of this deck is to swap Wasp and Yellowjacket‘s Power with your bigger targets like Doctor Doom or Odin. If they cost 0, Jane Foster Mighty Thor should be able to pull them to your hand if you didn’t draw them naturally. With Jane in the deck, you can also run Thor and Beta Ray Bill to maximize her effect. The shuffled hammers will not be effected by Pixie‘s ability though since cards must start in the deck. Even if you play Pixie and your Doctor Doom changes his cost to Adam Warlock‘s 5-Cost, that opens the door for you to play Doctor Doom into Odin!

Pixie looks like an incredibly fun card. Simply put, she is a new Mister Negative style deck that players can tinker with for months. Her biggest weakness is also her greatest ally: Mobius M. Mobius – if your opponent plays Mobius, Pixie is more of a liability than a benefit. I can foresee the first week of Pixie‘s release being lackluster as players will constantly run Mobius to tech against her decks. Once other new cards release, Pixie may get her chance to test her strength against a regular meta.

Mobius M. Mobius

Our second card of the week is Mobius M. Mobius! It’s not often you see the counter to a new card be featured alongside the new card, but he synergizes so well with her, its no surprise Second Dinner wants players to all have a level playing field. As you have seen already with Pixie, Mobius is a very strong card in decks with her. But what if you don’t want to play Pixie?

This Loki deck is basically the new Sera Control. A bunch of tech cards mixed with some good cards. You want to play Quinjet and get value from your generated cards. You can play Ms. Marvel and Devil Dinosaur for big finishers. If things don’t go to plan, play Loki! It’s that simple. Mobius functions like your other tech cards to stop your opponent from doing what they want to do.

Mobius M. Mobius is one of those tech cards that you won’t see at all until the right meta appears. His existence helps to keep other decks in check, including Loki, Mister Negative, and Pixie. If you don’t already own this card, he is an invaluable asset to have when your meta pocket is filled with cost reduction. Even after his nerf to a 3-Cost, he is still extremely playable in the right decks.

Spider-Ham

Closing out this opening week is everyone’s favorite spider friend, Spider-Ham! While he doesn’t synergize with the other cards this week, he is a fun and simple tech card you can run. His ability can singlehandedly win you matches if he bonks your opponent’s key card (like hitting an Annihilus against a Junk deck). He can also lose you the game if you bonk an The Infinaut or if your opponent plays Mobius (then the Pig will cost 0).

Since he is a 1-Cost card, he slots well into the bounce package. If your opponent plays the pig you gave him, you can continue to turn more cards into pics! Even if they don’t play the pig, his On Reveal an help trigger Hit Monkey or Werewolf By Night. Using Beast and Falcon to pick up your 1-Cost cards and Black Swan to discount them, you can dump your hand on the final turn to make a huge Werewolf and Hit Monkey!

It seems a bit weird to me that the developers want you to use Pixie and Mobius M. Mobius together, but then add Spider-Ham. He gets severely hurt by Mobius, so you don’t want to run Spider-Ham in a Mobius filled meta. Much like Pixie, this card will be much better in a week or two.

Spotlight Variants

If you already own the cards the Spotlight Cache offers, one of these variants will take it’s place! If you own none of the cards, the variants will appear after you open all four caches. Spotlight variants are time exclusive to their release week, with no estimated time on when they will be available again. So, if any of these Spotlight variants feel like a must have for you, make sure to Cache In if you have enough caches saved to guarantee the pull.

Should I Cache In?

This week, only Pixie is a Series 5 card, making the value a bit lower. Pixie looks like an incredibly fun card! Mobius M. Mobius is both a counter and synergy for Pixie, making him extra valuable this week. Spider-Ham isn’t great in a Mobius meta, but overall a solid card worth having.

My recommendation is to cache in! This week’ biggest weakness is the low value of 2 Series 4 cards, but the card’s strength and uniqueness makes up for it. Pixie looks like one of those cards you want to have simply for the wide range of deck styles she opens up.

**Edit: After spending some time with Pixie, she doesn’t land quite as strong as many players (myself included) predicted. She is still very fun, but the fact that cards can swap costs with themselves means you can low roll the entire game even with perfect draw. If you want a fun and unique card, I would still say the cache is worth it (I enjoy her personally). If you are more of a competitive only player, you may want to skip on this week to focus your keys on heavy meta cards.

If you don’t already own Mobius M. Mobius, now is also a great time to get two good cards at once! Even Spider-Ham is a solid card to pick up. If you already own Mobius, I would suggest using tokens on Pixie (if you want her) and hoard your caches for a week with more Series 5 cards.

Rating: 3 out of 5.
