Today, let’s explore the new card strengths and, of course, the best decks to try it out in.
Synergies
The change to Luke Cage in the latest OTA suddenly makes a lot more sense, as the now 2-cost would have completely denied this new 6-cost card. However, that update is not enough to sell me on Scorpion Brand New Day. Indeed, Luke Cage still protects all front-row cards, while Shadow King can also remove power afflictions, although that one would only affect one location.
If we get past these two, this new Scorpion has the potential to represent a great amount of power. Indeed, there are plenty of ways to afflict opposing cards. The synergy already has two archetypes with High Evolutionary and Hazmat led builds, while plenty of other cards could represent a starting point for an afflict based deck.

Obviously, I don’t except all these cards to end up alongside Scorpion Brand New Day. Maybe none actually can afford to pack such an energy demanding card in their list. However, if the 6-cost is only played in one deck everyone knows about, it will inevitably hurt its stock.
High cost cards only impact the later stages of a match, typically the moment of the match when most of the snap and retreats are done. If Scorpion Brand New Day becomes too obvious, the opponent will be able to anticipate the power it represents. From there, the only interrogation is where will the card itself be played, which isn’t enough to make the new 6-cost a menace.
There is no doubt Scorpion Brand New Day will be played in affliction related decks. After all, that is the only synergy available to the card. However, High Evolutionary could be playing Hulk or Ajax plus Abomination on the last turn of play. This creates a situation that is much more difficult for the opponent to predict compared to a deck that would afflict erratically for 5 turns and simply ask “Do I have Scorpion Brand New Day ?” on turn 6.
The Verdict: Should You Get Scorpion Brand New Day?
Overall, Scorpion Brand New Day should represent a solid amount of points in the right deck. Just Hazmat on turn five hitting five or six opposing cards makes the new 6-cost represent a [6/14]. Add all those small power afflictions from Silver Sable, Scorpion or Red Guardian, and it is likely Scorpion Brand New Day could rival The Infinaut for sheer amount of power.
However, the card also has glaring limitations. First, it is fairly simple to count how much power it will represent if played, meaning we should rarely get more than retreat cubes from our opponent. Then, unless we gain energy to play Scorpion Brand New Day before turn six, the card means affliction decks can’t be flexible on the last turn of play. Hazmat, Diamondback, and such cards are often a lot more effective when played as a surprise rather than early in a match.
I feat the only real use we’ll be able to make of this new card is add it to High Evolutionary decks. One archetype is enough for a card to be part of the metagame, especially as High Evolutionary has been a decent performer for quite some yet. Yet, I doubt it would keep its competitive status if Luke Cage was a popular card. Let’s hope the release of Scorpion Brand New Day won’t actually be bad news for the affliction decks, now forced to deal with counter cards.
