Welcome back to our new weekly series Cache-ing In! Each week, we break down what cards will be available in the new Spotlight Caches, as well as the Spotlight Variants! The goal is to help you determine if you should “Cache in” for the content, or hoard for a better week.
Spotlight Cache Week of July 9, 2024
This week, the featured cards will be the highly anticipated new Series 5 card
Hydra Bob
Kicking off this Maximum Effort season is the launch of
Hydra Bob looks like a bad card, plain and simple. A [1/4] that doesn’t help your gameplan in any way is tough to make the cut in any deck. Snapping is not a mechanic you want to use to encourage movement, and can actually create situations where your opponent can move your card with a Snap that wins them the game. With that said, there are a few niche uses Hydra Bob could see:
Possible Meta Deck for Hydra Bob
I think utilizing
Low Collection Level Deck
This zoo-move hydra hybrid lets you use Hydra Bob for 2 purposes. First, he gives you a higher Power 1-Cost card that works with your Zoo list. Second, his movement can work to boost Kraven, which you can stack your locations in an attempt to force Hydra Bob’s movement to a specific location. You can also stack cards into Angela’s location, then move them out into Kraven’s location for additional ways to gain Power.
Fun Hydra Bob Deck
Cerebro is always on the lookout for new cards that can potentially give new options for a specific Power level. Cerebro 4 specifically can use Hydra Bob as an excuse to give the 4-Power cards another shot at making this list playable. Cerebro 4 lost Captain Marvel as it’s move card, so Hydra Bob offers a new way to reach tricky locations. He also offers the first 1-Cost card the deck has access to.
Overall, I don’t think

Nebula

Picking up the slack this cache is the incredible Nebula! This top tier 1-Drop is a strong card for every collection. Her ability provides 2 strong services to your deck: First, she provides a high potential Power for her Cost. Left unchecked, she can reach as high as a 1/10! Second, she causes your opponent to play into locations that may not always favor them. Players will often play Nebula into unrevealed locations to either lock a card into a tricky location, or punish your opponent by playing into a bad location like murder world.
Nebula sees play in a variety of homes. One of her more popular lists are in Sandman decks! By using Nebula, you can set up Power growth in multiple locations early game. Late game, you can set up for Sandman to restrict your opponent. If they continue to play into Nebula’s location, you can grow power elsewhere. If they ignored her early game, now she is a threat that will continue to grow.
Nebula is a good card that has withstood the test of time. With a full year of time in the game and still frequently making meta lists, it’s safe to say this is a good card to own. Even at low collection levels, Nebula is a great addition to your Zoo decks and On Reveal decks. If you are missing her at any collection level, don’t sleep on the opportunity to pick her up.
Galactus

Closing out this cache is the legendary Galactus! He is a Big Bad, meaning he is a permanent Series 5 card that will never drop in Series. He is also a archetype creating card that is devastating to play against. While much of the community has been traumatized by the oppressiveness this card once created, he is still a viable option according to the developers. While he currently doesn’t sport a high meta deck position, you can often surprise your opponent’s with a Galactus play against combo decks.
There are several ways to play Galactus, and this deck is one of the many options he offers. While untraditional, this list opts for the surprise factor by playing lots of uncommon cards to throw players off your scent. You can ramp into Galactus through Electro, X-23, or Wave. You can also get lucky and swap a low cost card out for Galactus with Blink. Odd picks like Ultron let you get Knull and Death value by destroying your drones with Killmonger for alternate play lines. The deck takes some practice to pilot well, but can often be rewarding when the surprise pays off.
While not currently popular, developers have stated they don’t intend to buff him anytime soon as his stats are actually fairly good. Players that use him frequently have reportedly high success with him in their meta pockets. With that said, I think the card is simply a good investment. He creates a fun, unique archetype that can punish combo decks. With him also being a Big Bad, he also is a good investment since he won’t be available for a cheaper price.
Spotlight Variants
If you already own the cards the Spotlight Cache offers, one of these variants will take its place! If you own none of the cards, the variants will appear after you open all four caches. Spotlight variants are time exclusive to their release week, and will only be available after 1 full year of time has passed.
After the year, they will be available for purchase, though no mention of cost yet. So if any of these Spotlight variants feel like a must have for you, make sure to Cache In if you have enough caches saved to guarantee the pull.
As this month’s featured artist, PANDART STUDIO releases their Hydra Bob variant this week!
Looking for a unique variant? This one-off is by Sweeney Boo who only has this Nebula to their credit!
Ron Garney is also a limited run artist, with this Galactus variant being only 1 of 3 of his arts in the game currently!
Should I Cache In?
This week begins a month long journey where nearly every card is in Series 5 for every cache. Nebula and Galactus are the stars of the Cache, being the enticing cards you want to collect.
My recommendation this week is to Cache In ONLY if you are missing Nebula and Galactus. These two Series 5 cards carry the weight of this cache. Galactus is a new archetype and a good investment, and Nebula is simply a good card. If you already own one of both of these cards, you might skip out on this week. Hydra Bob ads no value to the Cache in my opinion, and will simply sit in your collection until his inevitable buff down the road.
