Welcome back to our new weekly series Cache-ing In! Each week, we break down what cards will be available in the new Spotlight Caches, as well as the Spotlight Variants! The goal is to help you determine if you should “Cache in” for the content, or hoard for a better week.
Spotlight Cache Week of February 14, 2024
This week, the featured cards will be the new Series 5 card Cull Obsidian, as well as Nimrod and the inevitable return of Thanos!
Cull Obsidian

Starting this week’s Spotlight Cache is Cull Obsidian! He is a 4-Cost, 10-Power card with the ability “You can only play this where you have a 1-Cost card.” This basically means that Cull is simply a power slam card. His effect doesn’t do much to the game besides add power, and his only drawbacks are needing a 1-Cost card in the location you want and being susceptible to Shang-Chi.
Cull Obsidian‘s obvious synergy comes from Thanos. The Infinity Stones are all 1-Cost cards, so playing Cull Obsidian becomes much easier. You also can pull Cull Obsidian from Lockjaw and be excited since he is just raw power. He also synergizes well with Skaar, being that he is a 10 Power card, as well as Blob.
You can also use Cull Obsidian‘s raw power in a bounce deck. If you didn’t draw your Werewolf in time, he can be a nice power substitute. With multiple 1-Cost cards available to bounce around, the need for a 1-Cost card to be present is much easier to achieve.
Your biggest weakness here is needing to bounce a 1-Cost card using Beast with Cull Obsidian already in play, so your planning must be well thought out ahead of time. With Zabu in this list, you can also make him a 3/10 for a premium statline.
Cull Obsidian may not be a flashy card, but he’s straightforward: Drop big power down. I don’t think this card is required to have in your collection, but he may prove useful in increasing the efficiency of existing decks.
Nimrod

For our second card of this week’s Cache, we see the return of Nimrod! Nimrod has never dominated the meta, but has popped in and out of the meta over the past year. While his decks may not be super popular, they are plenty powerful still.
One such deck is with
For a different way to trigger Nimrod, you can use him in a Destroyer deck. The idea is the same as the Phoenix Force deck: Grow your Nimrod and destroy it. This deck expands on the idea with Magik to allow you to follow up your destructions with Knull, Arnim Zola, or just play more destroy cards on your Nimrod. This deck’s biggest weakness is failing to draw Nimrod, as you lose your power snowball ability.
Overall, Nimrod is one of those sleeper decks you read about. His viability may dip when Armor and Cosmo are hot in the meta, but he remains a solid card if you enjoy the archetype.
Thanos

The Mad Titan, Thanos, returns this week for his newest Spotlight Cache! If you’ve been playing the game for a while, you know Thanos has been in and out of the meta over the past year. In this current meta, Thanos holds a solid place against other decks. As shown with Cull Obsidian, Thanos Lockjaw has proven to be the best Thanos list.
For an alternate way to play Thanos, try this ongoing zoo deck! You use Thanos in this deck to throw out lots of 1-Cost cards while continuing to draw. Ka-Zar and Blue Marvel can buff those 1-Costs, and you can use Spectrum, Valkyrie, and even Thanos himself as a finisher. Caiera can protect all of those 1-Cost cards from Killmonger, and Black Swan can make sure you have plenty of those 1-Costs scattered across the board.
Thanos is one of those must have cards in my opinion. He singlehandedly creates new archetypes and has remained meta relevant for most of the time he has been available. If you don’t own Thanos already, you should definitely do so now.
Spotlight Variants
If you already own the cards the Spotlight Cache offers, one of these variants will take it’s place! If you own none of the cards, the variants will appear after you open all four caches. Spotlight variants are time exclusive to their release week, with no estimated time on when they will be available again. So, if any of these Spotlight variants feel like a must have for you, make sure to Cache In if you have enough caches saved to guarantee the pull.
The widely popular In-Hyuk Lee begins his month if Spotlight features with this Cull Obsidian variant!
The widely recognized Snap artist Eduardo Francisco launches his alternate take on Nimrod this week.
This legendary Infinity Gauntlet comic cover by George Pérez is finally available as a variant. If you are a comic fan, chances are you already have seen this icon before. Needless to say, this variant may be a must have for lots of players.
Should I Cache In?
This week, 2 of the cards are from Series 5, making a good value for the Week. Thanos is definitely meta competitive, and Cull Obsidian may slot perfectly into that meta deck. Nimrod isn’t very popular, but remains a solid card nonetheless. Thanos and Nimrod open the doors to new archetypes and boost existing ones, but Cull Obsidian doesn’t create any new archetypes.
My recommendation this week is sweet and simple: Cache In! This week is not only a good value for your spotlight keys, but offers some crucial cards every player should have avaliable.
