Spotlight Cache Week of August 29, 2023: Are Silver Samurai, Kitty Pryde, and Spider-Man 2099 Worth It?

In this new series Cache-ing In, we look into each featured card of the weekly Spotlight Cache, how you might use them, their variants, and whether if it's worth pulling for or pass on to the next week!

Welcome back to our new weekly series Cache-ing In! Each week, we break down what cards will be available in the new Spotlight Caches, as well as the Spotlight Variants! The goal is to help you determine if you should “Cache in” for the content, or hoard for a better week.

This week, the featured cards will be the new card Silver Samurai, as well as Kitty Pryde and Spider-Man 2099!

Silver Samurai

Being our final new card of the season, Silver Samurai makes his Spotlight Cache debut. His card text reads “On Reveal: Each player discards the lowest-Power card from their hand.” The key point to remember with this card is that it uniquely targets Power, not Cost. So effectively, you want Silver Samurai to hit your opponent’s Iron Man, Dracula, Darkhawk, Cerebro, Mystique, or Knull as examples. This may sound crazy good, but the card also discards your lowest power card too. Moon Knight sees no play, even in discard, so why will this card?

The targeted discard lets you aim for a more positive self discard. For this month’s season, that looks like discarding the Muramasa Shard from Daken or X-23 for an early turn 6. On a combo level, you can discard your own Iron Man (or other low power card) and bring it back with Ghost Rider. This would be the same as the Lady Sif into Ghost Rider combo, but you can aim for a different target. You can also use Silver Samurai to trigger your Stature discount for the match!

Silver Samurai looks interesting, but I see it as a card that will be difficult to build decks around consistently. In order for the combo portion to work, you need Silver Samurai to activate the effect, then a low power card you want to discard, then your Ghost Rider on hand to bring it back plus Stature for extra value. This makes it a 3-4 card combo. There’s a reason you don’t see Lady Sif + Ghost Rider combos in the meta, because they aren’t consistent enough to compete with other meta decks.

If you use Silver Samurai to discard Muramasa, X-23, Wolverine, or even Swarm, you will find better consistency. Being able to discard your opponent’s card and get a decent value for your discard will make this card playable. I think this card has potential, but I’m not convinced it will be meta defining. I think it will be a fun card to mess around with and create some feel bad moments for your opponent.

Kitty Pryde

Kitty Pryde is an interesting card for the Spotlight Cache. Due to her buggy initial release, the card was given to every player who was active around the time of her re-release. This means a very large number of players already have her in their collection. If you are one of the few that were not able to get her for free, here’s a quick breakdown of the card for you:

Kitty Pryde is a staple for Bounce decks. Her ability to give you multiple triggers on Angela and Bishop without running out of cards to play, while also buffing herself, makes her incredibly strong. She also frequently causes you to lose priority at round start, so it makes dodging Killmonger or Shang-Chi much easier.

Kitty Pryde also sees play in the new meta deck featuring move cards! The goal is to go tall in a lane with Angela, Kitty, and move cards like Silk, Jeff, and Captain Marvel. You use move cards with Kraven to leave Angela’s lane to buff Kraven’s lane.

To put it simple, Kitty Pryde is a solid card that opens up some interesting new lines of play. If you don’t already have this card and want a more unique card to play, this is a good one to have.

Spider-Man 2099

Being the dud card from the Spider-Versus season, Spider-Man 2099 makes his first Spotlight Cache run this week. Unfortunately, this card isn’t that great. In theory, move decks having a destroy card is great! The issue comes from the fact that the destroy doesn’t target anything and can be very telegraphed. You can easily hit the lowest power card in the lane and get no value, and it will constantly feel like 2099 is purposefully targeting Rocks (it’s a Canon Event!). With destroy decks being meta right now, Armor will likely block your attempt anyways.

Besides the destroy inconsistency, the card doesn’t have a great cost to power ratio. Zabu doesn’t want the card as a 4 cost because Shang-Chi does the job more reliably. Move decks already have to balance fitting move enablers and strong abilities into their decks to keep up with other meta decks. Spider-Man 2099 just never seemed able to keep up with other move card abilities and quickly dropped from move lists.

If there was ever a candidate to see an OTA buff while being featured in the Spotlight Cache, it would be this card. I don’t know what buff it would need to make it good and not overlooked in the move package, but until I see an actual change from devs, this card is unfortunately not worth it.

Spotlight Variants

If you already own the card the Spotlight cache offers, one of these variants will take it’s place! If you own none of the cards, the variants will appear after you open all 4 caches. Spotlight variants are time exclusive to their release week, with no estimated time on when they will be available again. So if any of these Spotlight variants feel like a must have for you, make sure to Cache In if you have enough caches saved to guarantee the pull.

Artist Adi Granov makes their first Spotlight premier this week with Kitty Pryde! In total, they currently have 9 variants in the game, and each of them are popular picks for players. This is definitely a unique variant, and one worth having if you’re a Kitty Pryde fan!

This 2099 variant comes from artist Skan, who has seen 1 previous spotlight feature with Knull, and will be featured next week with their variant for… Knull again… In total the artist has 9 total variant credits so far.

Should I Cache In?

Coming off a very strong previous week, we are dumped into an extremely weak Spotlight week. Silver Samurai will be interesting to see in action. We’ve been surprised by cards before, but this one doesn’t seem to be a must have. Kitty Pryde is a very strong card, but Spider-Man 2099 is just bad.

This week, I recommend you Hoard Your Caches. Even if Silver Samurai turns out to be a good card, risking 4 Caches to get him this week just isn’t worth it. Most players already have Kitty Pryde, and 2099 isn’t worth a cache. If you really wanted 2099 though, he launched as a Series 4 card and can be purchased with tokens. With such low odds of opening a good card, it’s better to save those precious caches for a stronger week.

If you’re one of the players who never got Kitty Pryde, you might consider if she is worth Cacheing In for you. I don’t think she’s worth 4 Caches if you aren’t interested in Silver Samurai. If you are though, that makes this week a 2/4 good card week for you, which isn’t terrible. If Spider-Man 2099 gets a buff, I will update this article to reflect my recommendation based on that change.

Rating: 1.5 out of 5.
