The run of bundles with Tokens and Credits continues. The prices just keep rising: after Relic of Annihilation for 2,500 Gold we got Always Angry for 4,000 Gold, and now we have the Shadow Flame Warrior bundle for a hefty 5,500 Gold, quite a record in a long time since we haven’t seen anything over 5,000 Gold in months. But what about its value? It seems it’s only gotten worse… Let’s take a closer look.
Yeah, the bundle isn’t great. Total Tokens per Gold is around 0.84 – that’s only a bit more than the Token Tuesdays for 1,500 Gold and the regularly appearing bundles with 3,000 Tokens for 3,500 Gold. In other words – you don’t get any exclusivity in pure value for such a big sum; on the contrary, as the price rises you end up with less stuff per Gold.
The Progress Value isn’t great either – 108%, which is especially bad for 5,500 Gold. The only thing that might brighten the Shadow Flame Warrior bundle is the Starbrand variant, which gives the base version of the card to players who don’t have it yet. Since it was released about half a year ago, that option is fair for many players, but for those who already own Starbrand it seems pointless to buy.
Comparison With Other Bundles
By Progress Value the bundle performs very poorly – only a few other absolutely awful bundles like Army of One, Bio-Weaponized and Femme Fatale do worse, having almost zero additional Progress Value.
Within its price tier it’s the same – the Shadow Flame Warrior bundle is far below the average on the Progress Value metric. So, alas, competitors are ahead again.
On the most important and telling metric, Total Tokens per Gold, it’s even worse. In the past six months only one bundle performed worse on this metric, Army of One, and only Fool Moon Fury had a similar value. All other bundles delivered more value per Gold.
There’s no point even talking about Credits – they’re just decoration here, and this bundle doesn’t have a good Credits per Gold value. So anyone looking to get more Credits should pass on it.
What if you don’t have Starbrand?
So, without the card the bundle is very, very bad. But if you don’t have Starbrand in your collection the Shadow Flame Warrior bundle of course gains more value since it gives you a Series 5 card for free, equivalent to 6,000 Tokens.
And although I usually recommend waiting for a better bundle in general, if you really need or are interested in Starbrand – the value will be very good even with such a small base value.
Use cases for the Starbrand variant
As for decks where Starbrand might be useful, first and foremost it’s Sauron decks with Surtur. Starbrand has great synergy there and provides the best tempo in the game on turn 3 for a single card.
Another deck option that’s recently been gaining popularity is the Supergiant Sauron deck, which often has even better win and cube rates than classic Surtur builds. Starbrand also performs very well in it.
Conclusion
So the Shadow Flame Warrior bundle is very bad – it’s expensive, offers a mix of Credits and Tokens instead of more valuable Credits, and has terrible Total Tokens per Gold and Progress values. I don’t recommend the bundle to anyone who has Starbrand and buys bundles for value.
For those interested in getting Starbrand – it’s definitely worth grabbing. The card’s good, has its own decks and was released recently, so the chance it’ll suddenly become Series 3 from the next series drop is pretty low. In that case the bundle gets all 5 stars, but if you don’t count the card – only 1 star, the numbers are way too weak for such a high price.
