Marvel Snap July 2024 (Maximum Effort) New Card Guide: Review and Decks

Are the new cards in the July 2024 Season worth saving up for? Here's a breakdown of Gwenpool, Bob from Hydra, Ajax, Copycat, and Cassandra Nova in more detail and potential decklists.

Wait, is that an MCU Movie I spy on the horizon? And Marvel Snap is crossing over for the first time since Ant Man and Wasp over a year ago! Let’s take a look at what Glenn Jones and crew have in store for us this July 2024 for the Deadpool & Wolverine Season. And, of course, it wouldn’t be a Snap Judgments production if we didn’t give you decks. Let’s go!

Gwenpool

The July Season Pass card will be Gwenpool, the Season Pass card for the Deadpool & Wolverine Season despite being the one character this season that has nothing to do with either character in the comics.

Gwenpool is seemingly broken. She’s a [4/6] but her +2 ability can easily make her a plus 12. It’s pretty easy to abuse that ability with cards like Wong, Grand Master, and Absorbing Man. There are also targets that make that +2 so much more – Sebastian Shaw, Brood, Black Panther, Mysterio… so many cards love this effect.

I’m convinced this card being on the horizon is part of why we got the Zabu nerf. Gwenpool as a 3-Cost, especially when combined with Wong would be a problem. I think, though, this is probably a very good card anyway, as it kicks off an extremely interesting Season, with a diverse set of cards..

Bob from Hydra – July 9, 2024

Since last update, Hydra Bob was very badly nerfed. He’s now a 1-4 that moves at the end of the turn after any player Snapped. For regular Marvel Snap, that’s two moves per turn, outside of the player’s control. This feels like a very watered-down Silk or a worse version of Nightcrawler. 4 stats on a 1-Cost card is good, but Hawkeye generates the same and seldom sees any play.

There’s at least some hope for the card, though; it comes from weird places. The easiest is Cerebro 4. Although that’s never been a deck, between Sera, Ms. Marvel, and Klaw, there’s something there given that there’s just enough space for 1-drops along the curve. As a 1-7 with Cerebro or, better, a 1-10 with Cerebro and Mystique, Bob suddenly looks viable.

Bob’s other home is a Deadpool’s Diner deck. This new game mode is still a bit of a mystery, but we do know that we can Snap multiple times in it. A ton of Snaps with Hydra Bob doesn’t seem great until you realize that you can run Kraven and really made his numbers insane. The only problem here is that if this play is good, Kingpin will also find his way into Diner decks.

Ajax – July 16, 2024

Ajax is a [5/5] that can easily break ten Power, as his Ongoing ability gives him +1 for every card in play afflicted with negative Power. This is rarely going to happen at first, as the second he comes out Luke Cages will be everywhere, but that gives him a potential 29-Power if every spot on both sides has at least a -1.

His synergies are all over the place – Scorpion, Red Guardian, Hazmat, High Evolutionary cards – and the one answer to his ability, Luke Cage is vulnerable to Rogue and Enchantress, too. He’s great, dangerous, and probably the top-end Power that an affliction junk deck needs to take over the meta.

This card is disgusting, and probably the best card of the month.

Copycat – July 23, 2024

Speaking of cards that will be a problem – it’s Copycat!

In the Marvel Snap of a week back, milling an opponent out isn’t terribly difficult, and this is a mill tool that only needs to be drawn, not played, to ruin an opponent’s day. Milling down to one card and Copycat taking that card’s ability is going to be obnoxious, with the only real saving grace being that maybe that card is also the cheapest for Baron Zemo or Yondu.

Still, we know Surfer Zemo can be a tier 1 deck. YoWoodyMJ hit #1 on Infinite ladder with it. This tool for that deck feels insane. Sometimes it will hit nothing, but when it hits, the opponent will lose a Doctor Doom or an Odin or some other powerful card.

Sometimes the card it grabs will be detrimental. You don’t really want this to be a Destroyer, right? Just don’t play it! It happens automatically when drawn and is so strong in that context.

There’s one more major problem this card has – Arishem. Getting a random bottom card they’re guaranteed to never see isn’t awesome. It’s basically impossible to mil out an Arishem deck, severely weakening that archetype as well. If Arishem stays prevalent at an above 50% play rate, Arishem won’t be forever, though, meaning Copycat will eventually be a tier 1 card, even if that time isn’t at release.

Cassandra Nova – July 23, 2024

Cassandra Nova’s entire context has changed since her datamine. First, she’s a free card, achievable from playing through the new Deadpool’s Diner mode. This is the first free card for everyone since Kitty Pryde, over a year ago, and is a great reward for trying a new mode.

On curve, against a regular deck, she isn’t great. She’s going to be a [3/7] if played exactly right, though that becomes functionally higher as the opponent plays those negatively afflicted cards. Due to Ajax, though, Luke is likely to still be in the metagame, making this a harder play.

There is one caveat though – against Arishem, on curve, she’s a 3-19. That’s an absolutely wild amount of power for just playing a card, and as an On Reveal that hits the deck, Luke Cage won’t stop her huge power there. If Arishem is still meta, we’ll all get a huge, free tool to take it down. If not, then Mister Negative decks get a decent tool that’s probably not good enough.
