Marvel Snap April 2024 Card Reviews and Decks

PulseGlazer is excited about the new cards in the April 2024 Season Zeroes to Heroes, and you should be too! Here is his take on each card and some interesting decks to try them out in.

Marvel Snap’s Thunderbolts Season – April 2024 cards are just around the corner. I’ll be doing a huge video on all of these cards the day the new season launches, but I couldn’t wait to talk about all of the new cards coming to the game throughout the month. Of course, it wouldn’t be a Snap Judgments production if we didn’t give you decks. Let’s go!

This guide is for upcoming future content. All details are not final and may change upon release. Check out our datamining article for more information!

Baron Zemo

The April Season Pass card is set to be Baron Zemo, a card that introduces a whole new Keyword into Marvel Snap! Recruit, as a keyword, seems to mean “put into play”. It can happen on either side of the board and from any location, as Zemo specifies both from the deck and on his side of the board. This could be used to bounce cards into play from hand or deck, and I wouldn’t be shocked to see it added to the text of specific cards – notably Gladiator.

New keyword aside, Zemo is intensely difficult to evaluate. He started as a [4/6], which seemed expensive for what he did, before moving to a [3/4] and finally a [3/5]. Is it worth filling a spot on your side of the board with the opponent’s cheapest card? Probably not in a vacuum, but sometimes that will be Zabu or Silver Surfer and will immediately win the game. Unfortunately, Thanos means it’s probably just an Infinity Stone. Still, with Yondu to get rid of a cheap card and stuff like Gladiator, Cable, and Absorbing Man, mill could be a reasonable strategy for the first time in Marvel Snap as a deck on its own.

Most cards, though, don’t make new decks; they just go into already established ones. Zemo has potential homes here, too. Bounce doesn’t hate the free card, but both Silver Surfer and Loki actively like this effect and body. Zemo feels more like a Skaar– or Sebastian Shaw-level card than Hope Summers or Ms. Marvel, but only time will tell for a card that’s this different from what we usually get in Marvel Snap.

Red Hulk

I am worried about Red Hulk. His ability, if triggered once, makes him a [6/15], and twice makes a [6/19]. His power is out of your control, but the sheer amount of time in Marvel Snap it’s right to not curve out (Cyclops on Turn 4, War Machine on Turn 5, a 1-drop and Beast on Turn 4, etc.) means that this is going to be an absolutely huge play on Turn 6 with limited downsides.

We’ve seen this type of power get nerfed twice before. The original Evolved Hulk got his power anywhere and was often a [6/20], so that got nerfed pretty quickly. Blob was far bigger before his nerf, but, in Thanos (where he’s about as big as Red Hulk will usually be), he’s always played, and that’s the best deck right now.

Luckily for Red Hulk‘s chance to last, Lockjaw was nerfed. Cheating out big cards with Lockjaw was one problem with those aforementioned cards. But wait, Hope Summers not only lets you cheat out Red Hulk, but it means the opponent will be floating energy more often… Yeah, I’m worried.

I think Red Hulk is going to be the go-to 6-Cost card in a way that Blob and Alioth have been in the past.

U.S. Agent

There have been times in Marvel Snap’s history when this card would be meta-defining. When Darkhawk was everywhere (it was the best card and deck in the game at one point), players would stack multiple 4- to 6-Cost cards in one location. At that point, U.S. Agent was an absolutely monster. But do people still do that? Let’s look at den’s latest Tier List to see.

In Tier 1, sitting atop the game, is Thanos. Thanos has a few cards hit by U.S. Agent, but it usually stacks so much power that it probably won’t really care about the effect. Vision can just move away, and Mockingbird is still a [3/6] (or better). Destroy is back to Tier 1, too, and Death as free nine power hurts, Knull is just too big to care, and Deadpool isn’t affected at all. Lockdown is the third current Tier 1 deck. U.S. Agent is really good there; it wrecks a Doctor Doom and his Doombots, but it really doesn’t have a huge effect on Ms. Marvel. Still, the power is low enough for the Agent to swing a lane here. The final current Tier 1 deck is Discard, and, well, Dracula is annoyed, but Discard largely does not care.

In Tier 2, going more quickly, we have Patriot (doesn’t care), Loki (laughs), Black Knight (doesn’t care), Hela (unimpressed), and Phoenix Force (its key card costs two). It doesn’t seem like U.S. Agent has the right meta at the moment, but if, down the line, Zabu rises again, so, too, does the Agent.

There is one more place to look for U.S. Agent value… Cerebro 3. The deck runs Valkyrie, so that’d have to be on a different lane from the Agent, but elsewhere, hmm, making this a [3/5] to a [3/7] that takes away three to six power from opponents? Well, now we’re talking!

Red Guardian

Speaking of potential Cerebro 3 cards, there’s something here…

As a [3/3] that removes the text from the lowest-power enemy card, this can be really, really mean (and pairs hilariously well with U.S. Agent). Of course, it doesn’t need that to be game-winning. A naked Zabu or Hope Summers on Turn 3 can be killer. Dracula sits as a [4/-1] with no ability. Iron Man is a similarly useless [5/-2]. You can wreck a card like Morbius before he does anything, or turn off Mobius M. Mobius for cost reduction. Three energy is a lot, but this does a lot for the price.

As far as homes go, we’re looking at the usual places – Silver Surfer loves any powerful 3-Cost that solves problems. Loki can afford to play tech cards that may be useless, as can Sera. Do any of these make Red Guardian meta or become meta themselves? Hard to know, but this is a tool that will find a use.

White Widow

If you thought Debrii was frustrating to play against now, just wait for White Widow. She can put a 0-Cost, -4 power card on the opponent’s side of the board that can be combined with Debrii to fill a board. You can also use cards like Grand Master or Absorbing Man to send more nonsense over. Bounce loves abilities like this, too, as the previous version of Black Widow taught us. Even if it’s just filling space as a 0-power card, that’s insanely strong.

There’s some consternation as of this writing over who exactly has to fill a lane to turn off the -4 power, the person playing White Widow or the opponent. But, ultimately, the card is great either way. Cannonball is already a great card with the Goblins and Debrii, and cards like this just make it better. Hell, Professor X was not singularly dismantled by War Machine, and he works great with this card, too. Furthermore, the Widow's Kiss was a 1-Cost card, but now it’s a 0-Cost and no longer vulnerable to Killmonger. This is going to be wild.

Valentina

This is, without question, my card of the month. It’s super strong, and we know exactly what deck it goes in and how to use it. There’s an archetype that loves putting cards in its hand that occasionally just wants to play those big cards – it’s Loki!

Loki is always one of the very best decks in Marvel Snap, and every time it gets a new tool, I get a little worried. It’s not the boogie man that it was, but this card adding a random 6-Cost for four energy? Even at -3 power, that’s super strong.

Let’s look at the stats of the game’s 6-Cost cards with Valentina and whether or not they’re worth it.

  • Giganto as a [4/11]. Yes, please.
  • Heimdall as a [4/6]. Not great, but can be game-winning.
  • Hela as a [4/3]. There’s some Discard Loki decks that likes it, but meh.
  • Helicarrier as a [4/7]. Not bad, not back breaking. Pretty good in that Discard Loki deck.
  • Hulk as a [4/9]? Yeah, I’ll take that.
  • Red Hulk as a [4/8]. Great! It still grows, too.
  • Blob going for four energy and -3? No, probably bad…
  • The Infinaut at [4/17]? I’ll skip Turn 3 for that.
  • Leader as a [4/-1] is actually solid.
  • The Living Tribunal as a [4/6] is usually bad, but could be great in the right situation.
  • Magneto at [4/9] – I’m in.
  • Odin as a [4/5] is another situational one. Double Loki!
  • Onslaught at [4/4] is situational as well, but not bad.
  • Orka [4/8] is good, especially since you can still threaten its ability.
  • Destroyer as a [4/13] stomps Junk.
  • Doctor Doom as a [4/2] is amazing since the Doombots don’t change.
  • Galactus as a [4/2] is hilarious in Alioth Loki.
  • Agatha Harkness as a [4/11] will just play herself. Sounds good to me.
  • Apocalypse as a [4/3] is very bad.
  • Arnim Zola as a [4/-3] is probably bad, but sometimes hilarious (Goblins!).
  • She-Hulk as a [4/7] that gets cheaper is amazing.
  • Spectrum as a [4/4] is fine.
  • Thanos as a [4/7] is pretty vanilla, but it has good stats.
  • Ultron as a [4/5] is usually mid but can occasionally be awesome.
  • Knull as a [4/-3] is amazing against Destroy. Otherwise, crap.
  • Alioth at [6/-1] can still win games.
  • Skaar as a [6/8]… why not?

Oh, also? You can run Luke Cage. Yeah, Valentina is awesome.

Closing

That’s it for our early look at April cards. This Season isn’t “broken,” I don’t think, but these cards are all fun and push their archetypes further.
