Havok and Sebastian Shaw Decks: Bonus Challenge (Weekend Mission) Guide

Our guide for the this week's set of Bonus Challenge (Weekend Missions) featuring Havok and Sebastian Shaw! Complete the missions efficiently using our decks, or find out how they are performing and decide if you want the card!

During the weekend, there is now one more set of Missions for players to complete: The Bonus Challenge! These involve additional rewards for winning games related to the week’s new card and the Season Pass card. These missions provide extra Collector’s Tokens and Gold!

You need to win games with the card starting in your deck, and it does not count if the card was generated by cards such as Cable, Loki, and Maria Hill. Each of these reward amounts will vary depending on the difficulty of the mission.

There will be Bonus Challenge Missions available for each new card release, to allow players to earn back Collector’s Tokens and subsidize their cost. Players can also expect rewards to be currently stabilized at 200 tokens, intended to help players plan the token budget for the month.

Bonus Challenge: December 23, 2023

This week’s Bonus Challenge Missions are:

Mission#Reward
Win a Location with only 1 Card4200 Credits
Win with Sebastian Shaw starting in your Deck8150 Gold
Win with Havok starting in your Deck4400 Collector’s Tokens

Most players will want to be efficient with these missions, so today we will give you three different decks that incorporate Havok and Sebastian Shaw.

We’ll also give you a short guide on how to get the most out of the deck and finish the missions quickly, but first let’s take a quick look at the new card’s performance this week.

Performance

Havok Meta Stats

Havok is the only Series 4 card of the Hellfire Gala season and has landed to mixed reviews. The power output can be huge, but the impact of when and how you play it and can have huge implications. This limits what you can play within the deck to maximize the value from the card. And the real question is: are these limitations worthwhile?

First, let’s discuss Viper. With the OTA balance changes, this direction now feels ambitious and not a direction that worth much exploration. If you play Havok on Turn 2, you limit your Turn 3 to 2 Energy, so now it is not even possible to send it over on Turn 3. This means the play can be done on Turn 5 without intervention, but then it only stops one Energy. All this while giving your opponent a two Energy card that will scale to eight power (four at a minimum).

While lots of hype around this combo spread throughout the week from playtesting the decks, it was rarely the reason the decks won. They were good decks that happened to have a good value 2-drop which, when played later in the game, can have a huge impact. This last point is key to understanding how to play Havok and what to do with it from here.

The best direction to go is to use Havok later on, like Turns 4 or 5. This allows you to get Havok to 8 or 12 power and still have Energy to play other cards to compete with the other lanes. There are two synergies have emerged that have been able to use Havok as a value card outside of the Junk package. Ravonna Renslayer, for example, can allow you to reduce lots of cards into playable ranges on the later restricted turns. This allows Havok to grow to support one lane while you contest the others with cheaper cards.

High Evolutionary surprisingly emerged as the other potential home for the card. This deck looks to skip some of the later turns after playing Havok to reduce cards like She-Hulk and Abomination. While this may not be the best way to play High Evolutionary, it can be fun. The only deck that can confidently be improved with Havok, though, is Mister Negative.

Mister Negative can make great use of Havok. It flips to zero Energy and, with Ravonna, can come down to one Energy. This allows you to play it with and without Mister Negative and creates flexibility in the archetype. You can even try to include the newly reduced Professor X as a supporting card to lock down the lane with and without Mister Negative.

This leads us to the first real issue for Havok (and really recommending Havok at all): the decks often just fall short of other versions or the popular decks in the meta. This may change with time, but, for now, it’s just an interesting card with some interesting decks that is not likely to be missed.

So, how do you use Havok to rack up wins and complete the Weekend Challenge Missions?

The decks that are best at using Havok as a value card have included Ravonna Renslayer. This is because Havok at one Energy is much easier to fit in later in the game to start getting value from the card, and you can often reduce other cards to play under the restrictions as well. While most Havok decks also feature Ravonna Renslayer, this one takes top spot for this weekend because it can also include Sebastian Shaw!

Here, the goal is to reduce the cost of several 3-Cost cards by one (or even two with Mystique) so you can play them freely. You want to play Havok on Turn 4 or Turn 5 and then try to contest another lane with the 3-drops.

This one goes all in on Ravonna into Professor X as the primary game plan. This is then supported by trying to win an early lane with Storm and the 1-drops, and Ms. Marvel can get power into the adjacent lanes.

Mister Negative is a natural home for Havok; however, I promise the results do not support this archetype becoming a power house with the new card. It is a fun way to play, though, and this can be a change of pace during the weekend.

This deck includes the freshly nerfed Professor X as another Ravonna synergy, and Iron Lad is included because the deck is filled with good effects. This gives you outs when Mister Negative isn’t drawn in time and allows for flexibility.

Havok and High Evolutionary appeared potentially to be a dream, but, in practice, this can be an aggressive deck that creates awkward situations with Storm and Goose. Cards like Nebula, Havok, and Cyclops generate value without having to play extra cards, which is great for locked down lanes. You want to get power reductions on your opponent’s cards and then reduce the cost of your Abomination as much as possible in order to support your final turns with reduced Energy.

Closing Thoughts

Wins with the new card may seem a tall order some weeks depending what quality of card is released. Hopefully this guide helps you decide first if you want the card prior to the missions coming out, and what you can potentially play to complete the missions quickly!
