Spotlight Cache Week of September 5, 2023: Are Jeff, Ghost Spider, and Knull Worth It?

In this new series Cache-ing In, we look into each featured card of the weekly Spotlight Cache, how you might use them, their variants, and whether if it's worth pulling for or pass on to the next week!

Welcome back to our new weekly series Cache-ing In! Each week, we break down what cards will be available in the new Spotlight Caches, as well as the Spotlight Variants! The goal is to help you determine if you should “Cache in” for the content, or hoard for a better week.

This week, there is no new card in the cache. Instead, we get 3 cards that have already been out while the new card is available in the September Season Pass. The featured cards this week are Jeff the Baby Land Shark, Ghost Spider, and Knull!

Jeff

ALERT! ALERT! THIS IS NOT A DRILL! Jeff is finally available in the Spotlight Cache! If you don’t know why this is significant, you must not have played much Snap lately. Jeff is one of the best cards in the game, and until now has been held hostage in the Series 5 category. Many players have held out spending 6k tokens on him because he was due for a downgrade, but the flexible series drops and Spotlight caches have kept him from moving. Aka, the developers know what you want, and this carrot on a stick is finally within reach. Unfortunately, they know you want it so bad, that they have opted into repeat Spotlight cards this week, rather than cards that still haven’t seen their time in the Spotlight.

Jeff is incredibly versatile. Being one of the best 2-Drops in the game, he can fit into almost any deck and at least be decent. His strength comes from versatility. He can move, he can be played onto restrictive locations, nothing can counter him unless you buff him to 9 Power, you can play him as a second card vs Sandman or with Electro, and he can even add extra power to the Space Throne location! This card can do it all! Being a 2 Cost cars, he is very easy to play on curve, or throw him out late game and not feel too bad about it.

While he fits into so many decks, he shines in decks that utilize his ability the most. Lockdown decks love his ability to jump into (or out of) Storm’s Flooded location and Professor X’s lane. The popular meta deck featuring Angela and Kraven also loves to have Jeff, for obvious reasons. I could go on with decks this card works in, but we would be here all day. Just know 1 thing: Jeff is great and everyone should have him!

Ghost-Spider

Our Season Pass card of the week is Ghost-Spider! This card saw a buff to become a 1-Cost 2 Power after her initial release wasn’t as strong as the developers had hoped. Her ability to move the last card you played is typically used with Move decks, but she does see play in more combo-centric decks as well.

Move decks love the flexibility of movement with a low cost investment. Ghost-Spider allows you to trigger all of your powerful move cards like Multiple Man, Vulture, Dagger, and Human Torch. Her movement directions allows for the limited ability to move cards to the right, which helps move decks not get stuck on one side of the board. You can use Hulkbuster to retrigger the “last card played” and move it, meaning you can throw Hulkbuster onto Multiple Man and move him afterwards with Ghost-Spider.

Deck from STILLCRS

The combo decks that use her are much more niche in usage, but worth mentioning if you are considering getting this card. One such combo is utilizing Ghost-Spider in Galactus decks. One deck in particular, Sneaky Galactus, uses Invisible Woman to hide Green Goblin and Hobgoblin as well as Galactus.

Because none of those cards have revealed, you can play Ghost-Spider to move Invisible Woman, which will allow the only card left on your side of the lane to be Galactus, who will likely trigger if your opponent has -11 power worth of Goblins on their side! The combo isn’t the best in the game or anything, and does involve a good draw, but it can be fun and gives you an idea of what Ghost-Spider can do.

All in all, Ghost-Spider is a fun card, but currently not meta defining. If you enjoy move decks though and don’t have her yet, this might be an exciting week for you!

Knull

It’s round 2 for Knull this week. After being in the first ever Spotlight Cache, many players already have this card, especially after being avaliable for purchase since the start of this year. Instead of being a Series 3 card, we get a second batch of Knull before our first batch of Howard the Duck

If you don’t have Knull at this point, here is a quick rundown of the card: her obvious home is with Destroy Decks, and second home to Galactus decks. Her power output can be unmatched compared to every 6 Cost card in the game.

Destroy decks take advantage of all those destruction in more than just a way to get Death at a lower cost. Adding total destroyed power let’s you have a sizable turn 6 play in 1 lane, and a free Death can support an existing lane. Knull‘s 2 best friends are Yondu and Venom. Yondu can destroy a card in your opponent’s deck, and that card’s power is added to Knull‘s total!

Venom can shrink a lane down and trigger destroy cards, and be a great way to add massive power to Knull without sacrificing to much of your own power. Your opponent can also add to Knull‘s power if they destroy your cards. With the recent introduction of X-23, you can now play Knull on turn 5 and follow with Task master on turn 6!

Galactus decks are a much simpler line of play. If Galactus triggers, you play Knull. All of the power from other locations that got destroyed will all get added to Knull. The biggest weakness here is that Galactus only triggers if you are winning the location, so you often start the next turn with priority. This means your massive Knull is subject to a hit from Shang-Chi, Enchantress, or Rogue.

Overall, Knull is a good card, but most players have him already if they are interested in destroy. If you are just getting into destroy due to all the new destroy tools from last season, maybe you haven’t picked up Knull yet and now is your chance.

The Variants

If you already own the card the Spotlight cache offers, one of these variants will take it’s place! If you own none of the cards, the variants will appear after you open all 4 caches. Spotlight variants are time exclusive to their release week, with no estimated time on when they will be available again. So if any of these Spotlight variants feel like a must have for you, make sure to Cache In if you have enough caches saved to guarantee the pull.

It’s Jeff! And it’s Dan Hipp! What more is there to say?

ghost-spider-03

Artist Ken Lashley releases his first Spotlight variant this week! He currently only has 6 variants in the game, including the Twitch Drop Moon Girl and the Thor Ultimate variant. This card is actually one of 2 Venomized variants for Ghost Spider, with the other one being by artist Artgerm.

knull-08

This Knull variant comes from artist Skan, who funnily enough also made the first Knull variant in Spotlight Cache number 1.

Should I Cache In?

This week has that massive downside of not featuring a new card. This week also has the massive advantage that it holds one of the game’s best cards, Jeff. Ghost-Spider is a good move card, but not very meta. Knull is a good card, but most players have him already.

My recommendation this week is a difficult one. Jeff has been in Series 5 for so long, he is bound to drop eventually. I think it’s pretty clear Jeff is the only reason to open the cache this week. With that in mind, I think if you already have Jeff, this week is definitely a Hoard Your Cache kind of week. September has much better Spotlight weeks than this one, so you will need those caches

If you don’t have Jeff, you may consider trying for him this week. Considering we haven’t had a Series Drop in 2 seasons now, and the developers know Jeff is a popular card, they may keep holding him hostage. If you have been waiting for your chance to get him, you might have to this week. Just make sure you have 4 Spotlight Caches available. Of you are unlucky, you might need all 4 to get him.

Rating: 2.5 out of 5.

  1. I think this minimum should be 4 and a half stars for Jeff alone, it’s well worth the risk, but also the other 2 cards are key for movement decks and destruction decks, I think spotlight caches reviews should be done with 3 things in mind or make 3 reviews:

    1. if the player has all the cards
    2. if the player does not have any of the cards
    3. if the player has partially the cards

If the player has all the cards, it would be a matter of comparing what is coming in the next few weeks to see if it is worth spending your spotligh caches on this one just for the exclusive variants.

If the player does not have this week’s cards I would say it’s an insane week to spend 3-4 caches because the cards are so good, since Jeff is insane alone vs location locks strategies, and this meta is full of that, also good for move deks (Jeff and Ghost spider) and destroy decks (Knull).

If the player partially has some cards it depends, if you already have Jeff or not, Jeff is the most valuable card, it might even be worth risking some caches for him, although it also depends if you plan to secure Alioth next week.

  2. I already have Knull but need Jeff and don’t have Ghost Spider. Hoping I get Jeff first try but if not at least avoid another variant like I got with Nebula after going for X-23 and Silk.
