Welcome back to our new weekly series Cache-ing In! Each week, we break down what cards will be available in the new Spotlight Caches, as well as the Spotlight Variants! The goal is to help you determine if you should “Cache in” for the content, or hoard for a better week.
Spotlight Cache Week of October 15, 2024
This week, we get the newest Series 5 card Scorn! Joining it will be the return of the Series 5 card Sebastian Shaw and the Series 4 card Jean Grey!
Scorn

We are midway through the We Are Venom season already, and a new week means a new card! This week, we get Scorn. It is a 1-Cost, 2-Power card with the ability When you discard this, return it to your hand and give +2 Power to itself and one of your cards in play. This means you get a +4 Power swing each time Scorn is discarded.
The easiest way to look at this card is as an alternate Apocalypse. She doesn’t necessarily replace Apocalypse, but they have similarities. Both give +4 on each discard, but they can be targeted by different card types. Scorn synergizes well with Colleen Wing and Sword Master, and occasionally with Blade and Silver Samurai. Dracula could target Scorn at the end of the game, but her biggest benefit over Apocalypse is being able to be played outright.
Possible Meta Deck
This is likely where Scorn will settle in long term. In an already decent deck, Scorn offers an alternate discard target to Apocalypse or Helicarrier. This can let you gain extra Power while you wait for your big targets. Thanks to Corvus Glaive, you will also have enough energy to play your 6-Cost and Scorn on Turn 6!
Low Collection Level Deck
If this looks a bit unconventional, that’s because it is. Low CL doesn’t have many discard options, so you need to be a bit more creative. Odin, for example, gives you a chance to retrigger your discards on the final turn. This can boost Morbius, as well as empower The Collector and/or Strong Guy. Since your draws could be odd at times, Sunspot can make use of any extra energy. Otherwise, he can simply be discarded for Morbius ammo. Nightcrawler just gives you access to tricky locations.
Fun Scorn Deck
This list combines a Daken discard list with a Gambit combo list. You have two clear play lines. The first is discarding Scorn to empower Daken and Morbius. Mystique can copy either Wong or Morbius for flexibility. If this isn’t an option, aim for the combo with Wong, Mystique, Gambit, and Odin. This should eliminate your opponent’s board, as well as buff your own with Scorn. Swarm offers a backup if Scorn isn’t drawn, but it can also be played outright to offer a buff target if both are drawn.
Scorn Prediction
Scorn looks like a solid discard option, but nothing game changing. A 1-Cost card with a repeatable +4 Power is an incredible stat line, but stats that are that strong often means it will be difficult to get consistent value from the card. Miek is a 1-Cost that can move and gain higher than average stats, but he sees little to no play. Swarm is often the card of choice for discard value since it gives +3 Power for each discard and has no Cost. This means that if you discard Swarm, you will always get full value. Scorn only gets half value if it doesn’t get played.
Overall, I do think Scorn has potential. I am optimistic, but I’m not convinced this card will make it’s mark on the meta. I think the card will offer some fun off-meta shenanigans, but it really has to prove its worth over Swarm to remain relevant in the long term.
Jean Grey

Our mid-week card for this mid-season Cache is the return of Jean Grey! This control card has struggled to find a good home since her launch. A few Ongoing decks have tried to utilize her, but she is simply too limiting to your own game plan as well as your opponent’s. With the addition of War Machine, her ability is basically useless.
This deck focuses on the Ongoing synergy and uses Spectrum as a finisher. To ensure you don’t clog yourself, Madame Web can allow you to relocate the cards you put into Jean‘s location. In a meta full of On Reveal cards, Jean Grey + Cosmo can make your opponent have a tough time adjusting. The deck still suffers from War Machine counters, but you can always swap out Ant Man or Nebula for Echo. This could give you a way to stop a Turn 4 War Machine since it will have to be played on Jean Grey‘s location.
Unfortunately, Jean Grey just isn’t a great card. Not only does War Machine shut her down, Bounce decks and Move decks typically have plenty of ways to place a single card down to negate her restriction. Perhaps we will see a change to her ability in the future, but for now she is an easy pass.
Sebastian Shaw

Wrapping up this week is the return of Sebastian Shaw! This card is a staple in the Silver Surfer archetype. He basically acts like a Brood that doesn’t require three spaces to get full value. He isn’t versatile outside of buff-style decks, but he is very good in his respective archetype.
This deck has been an absolute blast to play. It drops the Surfer package and goes directly for a hand and deck buff style of play to boost your targets. I featured this deck in our Off-Meta Deck highlights, and you can see a larger breakdown on how to use this deck by checking out that page!
Sebastian Shaw is simply a strong card. He enhances both Silver Surfer and Buff decks to a significant degree. If you aren’t a fan of decks like that, he isn’t required to compete in the top meta decks. However, if you do enjoy those styles, he is a must have!
Spotlight Variants
If you already own the cards the Spotlight Caches offer, one of the variants below will take its place! If you own none of the cards, the variants will appear after you open all four caches. Spotlight Variants are time exclusive to their release week and will only become available again after one full year has passed.
After one year, these Spotlight Variants will be available for purchase from the Daily Offer section of the shop. They will cost 2,400 Gold per variant. So, if any of these Spotlight Variants feel like a must have for you, make sure to Cache In if you have enough caches saved to guarantee the pull!
Our featured artist of the month is PANDART STUDIO, and this week brings us the variant for Scorn!

Should I Cache In?
This week has a lower value than normal, only offering two Series 5 cards and one Series 4 card. Jean Grey is a rough card with so many counters prevalent in the meta. Sebastian Shaw offers a great target for multiple deck styles. Scorn offers an incredible stat line, but has tough competition in an archetype with limited discards.
This week, my recommendation is to Hoard Your Caches. I’m not seeing any strong value this week aside from Sebastian Shaw. Scorn is iffy on whether it will be worth it, but Jean Grey really brings this week’s Caches down in worth. If Scorn turns out to be incredibly strong, I would say Cache In. But, in my opinion, Scorn just doesn’t look like a mandatory card in the Discard archetype.
