Frigga

Welcome to the beginning of another new season! Kicking us off is the introduction of Frigga! She is a 3-Cost, 3-Power card with the ability “On Reveal: Add a copy of the last card you played to your hand. (if able)”

This card seems like an interesting combo piece, but it also seems a bit clunky. You ideally want to copy impactful cards, but at 3-Cost, you are pretty limited in your options. With that said, there are a few applications for her ability:

As a 3-Cost, Frigga benefits from Silver Surfer buffs. Utilizing Magik, you can play Frigga and Surfer on turn 6, giving you a copy of Surfer. This lets you Surfer and Absorbing Man on turn 7. If you can play Wong on turn 4 or 5, you have even more trigger opportunities. If you need more 3-Cost targets, you can copy a Brood or Sebastian Shaw. The rest of the deck isn’t anything new to the Surfer scene.

Frigga is actually more useful at a low CL due to the game’s simplicity. You can play Medusa, get a buffed copy, and replay her again for an extended buff. Frigga simply lets you copy your big scaling cards with low Cost. As you climb into higher CL though, more meta decks will quickly out-power this kind of list.

Fun Frigga Deck

I will be the first to admit, this deck doesn’t really need Frigga. But Mister Negative feels like a potential place for Frigga to find a home. With 0-Cost cards, you can potentially double dip some key cards like Iron Man or Sage. You can also get an extra Ravonna Renslayer that can act as a backup Negative. If you ramp out your Negative, you also have more opportunities to get Frigga value.

Frigga Prediction

The issue with Frigga is she simply costs too much to open the doors for more combos. She looks more useful with unreleased cards than with what’s currently available. I could see a use with King Eitri to copy a Mjolnir for example. You could try Anti-Venom combos, but that is a strict turn 4 and 5 play without using more cards.

I can’t find a great usage for Frigga, but maybe there is a strong interaction I’m missing that could really make her useful. The Surfer deck is the most straightforward home for Frigga, but time will tell if she makes the cut over other 3-Cost options.

Copycat

Joining Frigga is the return of Copycat! Despite not really changing the card’s functionality, her nerf to “copy” instead of “steal” has lowered her popularity. The ability is still very strong, and a bit underrated. She not only provides you knowledge of what card your opponent likely won’t draw, she often can provide a great ability for her Cost.

Just to name a few examples: a 3/5 Iron Man, a 3/5 with Rocket Racoon’s +4, a 3/5 Klaw, you get the idea. The card doesn’t have to cost a lot to make her valuable since she already has a great baseline. She can slot into a number of different decks, but isn’t required for any of them.

This is a great example. This deck is a Namora Skaar list. Copycat works well with Namora to reach 10 Power. If you happen to get a good ability, she’s even better. If you get a bad one, you weren’t banking on that card to win.

If you don’t own Copycat, I would say she’s a card worth collecting. She isn’t a build around card and isn’t a must have, but she does improve your ability to read into your opponent’s deck and possibly high roll matches.

Red Guardian

Closing out this first week is the return of Red Guardian. This card has remained untouched since launch, but has also remained very good. His ability to target low Cost cards allows him to frequently hit targets like Wong, Iron Man, or Madame Web. He slots into lots of different decks as a well statted tech option.

This Agent Venom Sera deck is packed with control options. Red Guardian works with many other tech cards to be prepared for anything your opponent might bring to the table. He also allows you to interact with Activate cards, which no other tech card can currently do.

That is the biggest long-term factor for Red Guardian: he can stop Activate cards. With new ones on the horizon like King Eitri and Fenris Wolf, you may need him in every deck to tech against activate. If you don’t own him yet, I would recommend picking him up at least as an investment to counter activate.

Spotlight Variants

If you already own the cards the Spotlight Caches offer, one of the variants below will take its place! If you own none of the cards, the variants will appear after you open all four caches. Spotlight Variants are time exclusive to their release week and will only become available again after one full year has passed.

After one year, these Spotlight Variants will be available for purchase from the Daily Offer section of the shop. They will cost 2,400 Gold per variant. So, if any of these Spotlight Variants feel like a must have for you, make sure to Cache In if you have enough caches saved to guarantee the pull!

Should I Cache In?

This week brings the top value of 3 Series-5 cards. Copycat is a strong, under valued 3-Cost option. Red Guardian is a solid tech options that will become more prevalent over time. Frigga has a fun ability, but is a bit limited by her Cost.

My recommendation this week is to Cache In! While Frigga is a bit iffy for me, there is great value in this cache. Red Guardian and Copycat are a great supporting cast to make the week worth it. If Frigga launches and is a bad card, you still get 2 great options to use! The week isn’t the best value we’ve seen, but it’s good enough to recommend.

Rating: 4 out of 5.
