Silver Surfer Theorycraft, Strategy, and Decklists – Prepare for The Power Cosmic Season!

Looking to prepare for Season 7 of Marvel Snap? We delve into the strategies and potential of the new Season Pass card Silver Surfer and theorycraft what decks it can fit in to!

Season 7 of Marvel Snap, The Power Cosmic, is set to kick off on December 5, 2022 at 3 AM GMT! The new Premium Season Pass will offer the new card Silver Surfer. The new Series 5 card Galactus meets his nemesis to continue their battles on Marvel Snap! For full details of the upcoming season, check out the Season guide:

Who is Silver Surfer?

He was part of a longstanding and intellectually advanced civilisation who inhabited the plant Zenn-La. He had a troubled upbringing due to his intelligence, pressure from his father and his father’s suicide.

His life changed forever when the Worldship appeared. Radd went to the Worldship alone and confronted Galactus who intended to devour Zenn-La. To protect Zenn-La, Radd made the ultimate sacrifice / bargain and offered to become Galactus’ herald and seek out new worlds for him to devour. This is the conflict at the heart of the Silver Surfer which makes him such an interesting character. He sacrifices planets to protect his home world, this led him eventually to Earth. During the conflicts on Earth with the Fantastic Four, his noble side was re-awakened and he helped fight off Galactus, sparing Earth from destruction.

Norin Radd (The Silver Surfer) has a special place in many 90’s childrens hearts, as he had an iconic cult following due to the animated series. He possess the Power Cosmic provided to him to fulfil his duties as the Herald of Galactus, this power places him amongst the strongest beings in the Marvel universe. It is only fitting he has the potential to be one of the strongest cards in Marvel Snap.

Strategy and Potential

Silver Surfer could be the centrepiece or a supporting piece in a few builds when he comes out and will allow for a lot of experimenting when he is released next week. The effect is powerful but limited in two key ways which make it different to cards such as Ka-Zar and Blue Marvel.

  1. The cards you’re targeting have to already be on the board.
  2. It is an on reveal, too double the effect it either has to be played after Wong or have Odin played on the same location post.

Limit 1 is the main limitation. 3 cost cards cost 3 energy, so playing as many of these as possible is a challenge. Also the energy cost can limit the rest of your curve. An advantage though is two 3 energy cards fit perfectly on Turn 6.

So we need to find ways to play more 3 cost cards. Two immediate paths to consider as Mr Negative and Sera. Both of these cards could allow for multiple 3 cost cards to be played when they normally could not. Mr Negative is the most abusable as we could multiple 3 cost cards for 0 energy if the draw is correct. Sera could be less high roll though, if we can play Sera on 5, we can then play 2 x 3 cost cards on 6 followed by Surfer.

Then there is full combo potential. Play Brood on 3, Play Wong on 4, Surfer on 5, Odin on 6 as one example.

Potential Score

Rating: 8 out of 10.

Cards with this many potential lines are valuable in SNAP as you can use the collection you have to utilise the card. Therefore it is less likely to gather dust in your collection without a use ever. However to truly abuse the card it does need several other key cards, such as Mr Negative, Wong, Brood and this limits the ceiling for the card and how high we can put its potential score.

Final note – We can however see uses across all the Series levels for Surfer, making him a high target as a battle pass introduction.

Below is some potential starter decks for Silver Surfer with brief descriptions.

A tempo deck with an Odin finish. Use Angela for incremental gains, can stack Wolfsbane and Ironheart for Odin finishes, or just play on curve using the 3 drops with the supporting 1 and 2 drops and finish with Chavez.

Ramping the difficulty up in Series 2, but note two key 3 drops which are excellent targets, Killmonger and Storm. Therefore recommend dropping the 1 drops and Chavez to make room for the control package of Storm, Killmonger and Jessica Jones. We keep Star Lord and Angela as they can be played on 2 and 5 alongside 3 drops if needed. Star Lord is retriggered by Odin, which is the reason for the inclusion.

The goal here is to play 3 – 3 cost cards on 6 with Wong on Board. Not 100% confident in the requirement for Psylocke, but she will help us skip up to Wong on 3, followed by Ironheart or Wolfsbane early, freeing up your Turn 6 plays slightly. Consider this a starting point as we may want to drop a few 3 drops for 1 or 2 drops if the curve ends up too awkward.

Series 4 and Beyond

Here the goal is to plat Bast on 1, Psylocke on 2, Negative on 4 and profit. The rest of the deck inverts to insane potential and they are primarily 3 cost cards. Valkyrie is included as an equaliser. Playing her on 5 even, followed by Ironman can win a lane, and she buffs every other card in the deck if they are on the board. Even on the inverted cards she is barely a negative!
