This week’s Marvel Snap Featured Location is Nova Roma: Draw a Card. This is a hot location for Marvel Snap’s April 2023 season, Animals Assemble. For the next 24 hours, it will now have a 50% chance of showing up in games. Let’s find out what the best strategies, cards, and decks are with the new patch!
Strategy and General Tips
The simplest of locations can sometimes have the biggest impact. In this case, the impact may seem small, but it will change the strength of a few key cards during the location. For example, Darkhawk will have less power in most games. On the other hand, some cards could get much stronger; America Chavez, for instance, should get a boost since you are more likely to draw the other cards you need.

The problem with this location is the decreased variance of certain combinations of cards not reaching your opponent’s hand. This leads to potentially facing the same strong combos every game. I put it this way because it is unlikely that bad decks will suddenly become good because of an extra draw, but you now have to respect the combos more and expect players to stay in games more often (because they’re expecting to draw the cards they want). The recommendation this week is to play good decks that like having extra cards. Especially since we are entering a new balance patch, playing proven favorites may hold extra value if you’re still climbing.

Therefore, you either need to have counters for what is most prevalent or have the strongest thing to do. If you see lots of Galactus, make sure you have the counters; this deck is one that benefits greatly from card draw.

One deck that can have multiple strong combinations and make use of drawing an extra card is Hit Monkey. It may not seem the most obvious direction to abuse an additional draw, but this deck thrives on playing Beast, Mysterio, and Hit Monkey. If you’re more likely to see these cards by Turn 4, you can set up many different combinations to finish off the game. This range of combinations means it will hopefully always benefit from the extra card draw.
Similarly, Move decks could benefit as they have many different two- and three-card combinations that will be more likely to hit your hand before Turn 4 to set up.
Sera-based decks could also be a good choice. They have a strong synergy with extra card draw, they can counter combinations, and, as a result, they’re more likely to draw their counters.
Main Deck Feature
Hit Monkey is a card that benefits from drawing specific cards early, and the extra card draw should help with that. We can also use Hit Monkey with another card that benefits from being drawn before Turn 5: Sera. This combination has been around since Hit Monkey came out, and it gains a significant power boost with Nova Roma. There are plenty of versions of this deck, so how about a version that is primarily built to drop unpredictable bombs on Turn 6 and gets to utilize the new Series 3 cards Bast and Valkyrie?
This deck is a flood deck, and the goal is to flood the board as late as possible so you can play your power cards away from where your opponent plays. With Sera on Turn 5, we can easily play three to six cards (with Mysterio counting as three). This makes Hit Monkey a lane winner by himself. We carry Valkyrie instead of another tech card like Shang-Chi due to the ability to simultaneously buff our cards while stopping our opponent’s plans.
With Sera down, you can Mysterio into Valkyrie on the clone and Hit Monkey with the real version. Bast is our one drop of choice, alongside Nova, as we rarely need Bast to live at the end of the game, and Killmonger + Nova on a full board is a huge buff.
Series 2 and below (pre- CL 474)
Move is an archetype that can surprise opponents, but at times you don’t draw the right pieces in time to pull off any combinations. The extra draw helps, and America Chavez helps us push the Move cards further up the chain.
After Credits
It has been a while since I have featured a Mister Negative deck, but given the extra card draw and the fact that this location will drop in a relatively new metagame, here is a take on the Negative Knull archetype. We play Throg (sorry, I mean Thor) and Jane Foster Mighty Thor to draw the 0-cost cards after the Mister Negative.
As the deck is draw-dependent, we do run the risk of drawing extra 0-cost cards prior to playing Mister Negative, but we also gain an additional chance to play Mister Negative on Turn 4. This should offset the negatives (pun intended)!
