Marvel Snap June 2024 (Eternals) New Card Guide: Review and Decks

Are the new cards in the June 2024 Season worth saving up for? Here's a breakdown of Gilgamesh, Thena, Sersi, Makkari, Phastos, and Arishem in more detail and potential decklists.

Glenn Jones and his team have been killing recent Marvel Snap card designs, and I, for one, could not wait to talk about the new June 2024 Eternals Season cards. This one, though? Well, it’s weird. Still, we have to talk about it. This could utterly change the game or each of these cards could land as an unplayable dud. Let’s get started. Of course, it wouldn’t be a Snap Judgments production if we didn’t give you decks.

This guide is for upcoming future content. All details are not final and may change upon release. Check out our datamining article for more information!

Gilgamesh – June 4, 2024

The June Season Pass card is set to be Gilgamesh. This [5/2] potentially invites a whole new archetype into Marvel Snap, as he may finally allow us to make a strength pump deck, a deck that seemed primed to exist when Sebastian Shaw looked like it was coming out with Firestar.

There is an unknown here though. Gilgamesh gets +2 for each other card in play with increased Power. Sebastian Shaw has a similar trigger, but notes permanent Power. If Gilgamesh works with cards like Ka-Zar and Blue Marvel, Zoo has an insanely powerful end-game finisher on its hands. I don’t think it will work that way, but the missing “permanent” at least gives me pause.

Even without that, though, a deck with some combination of Black Panther, Nakia, Okoye, Silver Surfer, Forge, and the aforementioned Shaw is quite interesting. Season Pass cards don’t always hit, but this being a [5/2] suggests that there’s likely something strong to do here. At absolute worst, he’ll be awesome in Mister Negative decks.

Thena – June 4, 2024

Coming out with Gilgamesh is another new card pushing a new archetype. We’ve never previously had to care how many cards we play in a turn, but now, Thena worries about exactly that, gaining a whopping +3 Power whenever exactly two cards are played.

So, is that good? Well, certainly, right? A [2/7] is a lot of stats! But is it better than Angela? That card, one of the best in Marvel Snap will be its primary competition. It’s possible, though, that Thena can sidestep the problem by being good enough in Ravonna Renslayer and Professor X shells. If so, then we have another powerful 2-cost build-around.

I’m going to be honest though – this card feels like the start of an archetype not the end. With numerous cards potentially eventually gaining this trigger, a really fun deck seems fairly likely. For now, though, I expect this to disappoint by being good, not great.

Sersi – June 11, 2024

Sersi is an extremely variance-heavy card. She transforms all your cards at a location to a card of one higher Cost. If played in a lane with a 2, 3, and 4, she could make Carnage, Venom, and Jubilee…. or she could make Jeff the Baby Land Shark, Gladiator, and Ms. Marvel. There’s no way to know.

I’m naturally averse to this kind of card – that level of variance isn’t for me. I await turning my Leech into a random Destroyer and losing the game… but a lot of other top players, notably Marvel Snap Zone’s genius writer SafetyBlade, think that the good hits outnumber the bad by enough to make this useful.

One trick to avoid too many devastating hits is to play Sersi on fewer cards. Multiple rolls with her give a chance for multiple undesirable outcomes. Given the presence of discard and destroy as archetypes in this game – that’s terrifying. But if she only has one card that has a chance to utterly ruin you, that’s less likely, right? I don’t know, I’m an English teacher, but that seems right!

I’m avoiding this one. What a weird month.

Makkari – June 18, 2024

Makkari will answer the question for us if 3 Power is enough to make Angel or M'Baku playable. He’s dangerous in a clog meta – he can go anywhere, but leave you a full lane with no way to win it. But he is a 3-cost with a free 3-Power, and that means he has one home, at least potentially.

Silver Surfer would absolutely consider this type of card, at least in the Nakia/Okoye versions. Those have fallen a little but out of favor, but with this card, an extra free 5-8 power could be just what it needs to become the favored Surfer deck. Still, though, that version doesn’t run Baron Zemo, and while you have to pay for that card, it likely gives pretty similar stats to this… Neither card plays especially nicely with Brood, either, so this may just be unplayable in Silver Surfer.

I can’t really imagine this card being good anywhere else. That it happens at the end of turn drawn makes it quite dangerous, and it’s not like it can Jeff and move. There are simply not other decks that just want a random 3-Power, so we’d better hope this works in Silver Surfer decks.

Phastos – June 25, 2024

This is, very easily, my card of the month. +2 Power to all your draws is great. -1 Cost to everything you draw feels broken. I’m in love.

Obviously, here, we have yet another Silver Surfer card. Surfer cards like Brood and Shaw amplify the buff, and, well, these decks run Sera, so extra discount seems great, especially with cards like Wong and Absorbing Man whose cost can otherwise be detrimental to the deck’s plan and require running cards like Magik. Phastos, along with Hope Summers, should take care of that, and maybe even allow for the removal of Sera.

But… does every deck just kind of want this? The card might just be best in slot. There’s no minimum 1 to the cost, so Bounce or Zoo are thrilled. Even a deck like Discard or Destroy is happy to have this amplifier or speed up for the deck. I plan to put Phastos in everything. You can’t stop me. Nothing can stop true love.

Arishem – July 2, 2024

What a huge swing this card is! The first 7-Cost card in Marvel Snap has a wild ability. As the Arishem player, you get +1 energy all game! You don’t need to play Arishem, either. Like Thanos and High Evolutionary, it just happens That’s huge and wild, but so is the cost.

Arishem puts a totally random extra 12 cards into your deck. Those cards could be amazing for you… or they can be 12 6-Cost cards that you draw entirely at the start of the game. It’s just like District X… so, is it worth it?

My main guess is no, but then, there was a time we thought that about Thanos. Evaluating this card is fundamentally impossible outside of gut reactions since it’s so far outside the realm of what we’ve come to expect from Marvel Snap.

There are some ways around the weirdness, too. Some card generation cards give specific costs, and if any of them are drawn, then you’ll have things to do with that energy. That kind of card generation, too, means we may have a Loki deck. And, well, Arishem should work like District X with Collector. Did you miss Loki Collector? Can this work!?

One thing is sure though: the memes, the clips, and the content generated will be SO much fun!

That’s it for our early look at June cards. This Season is insanely weird, which is just perfect for the Eternals, perhaps Marvel’s weirdest property.
