Krakoa Featured Location Guide: Strategy, Best Cards and Decks

This week's Marvel Snap Featured Location is Krakoa: On turn 5, takes over and plays both players’ cards for them. Here are our proposed strategies with the best cards and decks that you can try (including for Pool 1 and Pool 2 players) for the next 24 hours with the new location!

This week’s Marvel Snap Featured Location is Krakoa: On turn 5, takes over and plays both players’ cards for them. This is a brand new location for Marvel Snap’s March 2023 season, Days of Future Past, now added to the Location pool. For the next 24 hours, it will now have a 50% chance of showing up in games. Let’s find out what the best strategies, cards, and decks are with the new patch!

What is Krakoa?

Immortal X-Men #1

Krakoa – the island that walks like man – is the sentient, living island that mutants now call home after it was repurposed by Professor Xavier as a safe haven. As a living island with powerful abilities, Krakoa offers mutants protection, resources, and community that they could not find elsewhere. Its plant-based materials can provide mutants with food, medicine, and other necessities, while its unique communication abilities allow it to connect with mutants in a way that no other place can.

Additionally, Krakoa is also a symbol of mutant unity as it brings mutants from different backgrounds and factions together under a shared goal of building a better future for themselves and their kind.

Strategy

It feels like a large portion of the player base has been dreading this location. Krakoa will take control of your Turn 5. The assumption is that this will be similar AI to Ego and Agatha Harkness; therefore, it is likely to take control and potentially do the exact opposite of your best play. The reception to this one will be interesting, but I am here to tell you the sky is not falling and this location is actually really simple.

First, and this is incredibly easy but it bares mentioning, turn off the location. You have until Turn 4 to turn it off. If you are playing a deck that wants to play a specific Turn 5, you need to consider this. And this is basically any effective deck in Marvel Snap right now. Scarlet Witch is the most consistent way since she costs the least, and decks that can accommodate or even benefit from playing Storm are the other way to go.

Building for the location is simple, too, and in the current meta this has some benefits. We basically need to consider how we can limit what can go wrong on Turn 5. Electro decks can do this. If Electro is on the board, Krakoa can make precisely one play. The same is true if Sandman is on board. If all we have in our hand are big plays that generally push forward the same game plan, we may have an advantage over our opponents. This game plan can also counter a lot of the current strategies outside of Shuri.

With this location more than most others, how the player base decides to interact will have a big impact on which option is the way to go. If players continue with their same decks and choose to embrace the chaos, Electro and Sandman may be significantly better. If not, choosing to turn the location off is the way forward.

The most promising build to experiment with during this location is the Sandman / Electro Ramp direction. The core of the deck is Electro, Sandman, Doctor Doom, and Odin (and Sunspot is highly recommended). Outside of this, the rest of the deck is fair game and should be experimented with.

This week I’m featuring a build that uses Heimdall as a potential way to surprise our opponents with a swing in game state. We are also running Wave and She-Hulk as ways to pull off the Wave into Doctor Doom + She-Hulk combo on Turns 5 and 6. The skill of this deck is recognizing when you shouldn’t play Sandman and instead play for Wave finishes.

The short recommendation here is try to fit one of these two cards into your lists for the next 24 hours. If you want to try a build made for the location, here is a starting point. This priority build aims to incorporate both Scarlet Witch and Storm so we are more likely to turn off Krakoa, but it’s still built to limit the misplays from Krakoa.

You will notice the lack of other control tools. This is by design as it allows us to play into allowing Krakoa to play our turn if we need to. This gives us more flexibility, and the goal will be to win a lane with Storm where we can just play bigger midrange tools than the opponent for the second lane. If you own Zabu, try dropping Scorpion and putting it in instead.

What You Should Play

Sandman and Electro is the direction to experiment with. It has other benefits right now outside of the location, and it limits the damage Krakoa can do to you while advancing its own game plan.
