A Balance Update is a great chance to test new ideas, explore various deckbuilding possibilities, and just have fun with the game feeling fresh. However, those new ideas can also be difficult to pilot at first, or not completely refined. Then, it is important to take a step back and focus on the elements we can control, and improve, rather than treat those brews the same way we would with an established meta deck.
To do so, I asked the participants to follow a little checklist at the start of every turn, so they constantly have the indispensable elements in mind to make a decision. Here it is if you want to test it for yourself:
- How impactful can the locations in the game be?
- How many cards does my opponent have in hand?
- What is the state of each location. Won, lost, or contested?
- Who has priority going into this turn?
These aren’t complicated information, and are mostly here to keep us focused on what could impact our play patterns. Plus, it focuses only on information we can easily gather, not trying to go too far on the “What is my opponent playing?” or “What do I anticipate they might do three turns from now”.
We are playing in a new environment, we need to keep things simple, and focus on the game’s fundamental mechanics. Also, you’ll notice the Snap and Retreat are left out of the equation, due to not being important when testing the potential of a new deck.
