Corvus Glaive and Black Swan Decks: Bonus Challenge (Weekend Mission) Guide

Our guide for the this week's set of Bonus Challenge (Weekend Missions) featuring Corvus Glaive and Black Swan! Complete the missions efficiently using our decks, or find out how they are performing and decide if you want the card!

During the weekend, there is now one more set of Missions for players to complete: The Bonus Challenge! These involve additional rewards for winning games related to the week’s new card and the Season Pass card. These missions provide extra Collector’s Tokens and Gold!

You need to win games with the card starting in your deck, and it does not count if the card was generated by cards such as Cable, Loki, and Maria Hill. Each of these reward amounts will vary depending on the difficulty of the mission.

There will be Bonus Challenge Missions available for each new card release to allow players to earn back Collector’s Tokens and subsidize their cost. Players can also expect the rewards to be stabilized at 200 Tokens to help them plan their token budget for the month.

Bonus Challenge: February 23, 2024

This week’s Bonus Challenge Missions are:

Mission#Reward
Play 500 Power’s worth of Cards500200 Credits
Win with Corvus Glaive starting in your Deck4200 Collector’s Tokens
Win with Black Swan starting in your Deck8150 Gold

Most players will want to be efficient with these missions, so today we will give you three different decks that incorporate Black Swan and Corvus Glaive.

We’ll also give you a short guide on how to get the most out of the deck and finish the missions quickly, but first let’s take a quick look at the new card’s performance this week.

Performance

Corvus Glaive Meta Stats

Corvus Glaive is our latest Marvel Snap Series 5 card in the Black Order Season. It is three energy for five power, and it provides you with one extra energy for the rest of the game after discarding two cards. Is losing two cards for extra energy good enough, or is the cost too high to be worth paying?

In practice, the concern is how often one extra energy really advances your strategy with the risk involved. While we can point to many currently successful strategies including Corvus Glaive, whether it is advancing these strategies is more questionable.

For example, including Corvus Glaive with Hela and Lockjaw does give you options, and it can help you play early Hela. But keep in mind that you are adding random discard to a deck that is succeeding thanks to the targeted discard. All this is to say Corvus Glaive definitely works with Hela, and it allows for some interesting builds based around less targeted Discard as well. In practice, the versions that first appeared with Sandman and even just included Corvus Glaive in Lockjaw Hela just had too many bad outcomes when compared to the now established builds with specific targets and discards.

This extends to including Corvus Glaive in Thanos. The theory is having more targets you don’t mind discarding makes the extra energy free. However, while it does work, claiming it is better than including Leech or another card in your deck with Thanos and maintaining consistency is difficult.

Hela is such a big payoff when it works that looking for another way to benefit from playing Corvus Glaive worked better than the “plug and play” solutions after the dust settled. What is that second payoff? The Infinaut. You can play Corvus Glaive on Turn 3 and skip Turn 5 for a free She-Hulk on Turn 6 with The Infinaut.

What this allows you to do is drop supporting cards like Magik and Leech from the combo and include cards like Hela and Black Knight instead. This makes you more flexible in the early game and less likely to have to rely on Hela on Turn 6.

Since you have multiple lines for the extra energy and the discards, the deck has more flexibility and can compete against the current meta. The question remains, though: is this better than playing Lockjaw? The answer for now might be no, but this could change quickly.

The issue with untargeted discard in Marvel Snap is how few turns you have and how much power is contained in specific cards. The risk may seem small, but the chance to instantly lose games when you only have six turns is not often a risk worth taking. This is why cards like Wolverine and Swarm made the older Discard decks so strong. They change the odds and remove bad outcomes.

So, does Corvus Glaive work with Discard? Well, yes, it does, but the problem has been finding something to do with the extra energy. Unfortunately, there is very little, but the decks with Helicarrier and the Discard package do work and they can be fun.

Which brings me to next week’s new card Proxima Midnight. What this card may do is reduce the bad outcomes from playing Corvus Glaive and allow this card to really shine. With the basic Discard package and emerging builds with The Infinaut holding up enough right now, there is a real chance that the card next week pushes these directions into real contention.

So, whether you should buy Corvus Glaive is a complex question. If you like discard in general, it is easy to recommend. When you start moving past the established decks and building more unique strategies, the card is already performing OK. When you add the new card next week, it may just perform better and become something you will feel like you must own.

As it stands, some interesting decks can be played with Corvus Glaive. Without Proxima Midnight, though, it does feel like a piece is missing.

So, how do you use Black Swan and Corvus Glaive to rack up wins and complete the Bonus Challenge Missions?

In an attempt to improve the Hela Lockjaw deck for Corvus Glaive, this deck includes more of the traditional Discard cards. This allows you to be more aggressive with your plays. You carry some big 6-drop plays for after Corvus Glaive alongside Hela, of course. I was strongly considering swapping out Magneto for Helicarrier, so this might be something worth trying if you want to add a little spice to this list.

This was the deck that found the most success during the week with my games. This deck is surprisingly flexible since you can easily get 1-drops down. Then you have lanes to play Cull Obsidian, and when you can’t it is still a 10 power discard target. You can use the extra energy from Corvus Glaive to enable She-Hulk and The Infinaut plays on Turn 6 without having to use Magik. This is incredibly strong into many decks, and it still wins games by itself.

As for Discard, you want to stack the deck with good discard targets. This allows you to just throw down cards on curve and use the extra energy to play more cards. This direction can be strong, but it also struggles with bad draws at times. It is the simplest to play, though, and it should easily go through the missions and give some good practice for the release of Proxima Midnight.

Closing Thoughts

Wins with the new card may seem a tall order some weeks depending what quality of card is released. Hopefully this guide helps you decide first if you want the card prior to the missions coming out, and what you can potentially play to complete the missions quickly!
