Sub-Mariner is the third Series 5 card joining Marvel Snap for the June 2026 Season, Marvel Beach Bash. It is a 1-Cost, 2-Power card that reads: When this is Empowered, add a random 1-Cost character to your hand with that same increase. (if in hand or in play)

Today, let’s explore the new card strengths and, of course, the best decks to try it out in.
Synergies
Sub-Mariner is extremely close to another 1-cost already in Marvel Snap : Clea.
I could do the same type of analysis I did for Jubilee Silver Surfer, when I compared that card to Stick, and failed predicting her impact accurately in the process. Yet, I don’t think Sub-Mariner will replace Clea in any deck, rather join her as another card to build around.
Indeed, Clea felt a little lonely up until the point, with her decks feeling shaky when she didn’t show up in the starting hand.
Sub-Mariner isn’t as reliable since we don’t know which card we will get. This means it won’t function with some of Clea’s friends such as Werewolf by Night or Nicholas Scratch. However, we know that Sub-Mariner will have plenty of support whenever Clea is already part of that deck. Plus, both generate 1-cost cards, so we can always build around that specific synergy, keeping the buffs but changing some of the other cards.

From this group, only Ka-zar does not synergize with Clea, as the skill she generates does not stick to the board. Still, 4 cards is more than enough to serve as possible support or payoffs in a deck.
Then, if we wanted to get away from Clea, Marvel Snap features a decent amount of buff oriented decks we could just throw Sub-Mariner into. The card would serve as another reward card, which the likes of Silver Surfer or Zombie Galacti already have enough of. Yet, adding some beefed up 1-cost cards to our hand can always contribute to spending our energy consistently, and work towards grabbing priority heading into certain important turns.
Another direction would be to use the new release with cards rewarding us for growing our hand, if we can mix those with enough cards to empower Sub-Mariner.

In that group, the key card clearly is Kahhori, acting as the bring from the buff to the created cards synergy.
The Verdict: Should You Get Sub-Mariner?
There are more than enough 1-cost cards available in Marvel Snap to find one for pretty much any deck. Even the buff oriented ones already have Mercury, America Chavez or Nico Minoru.
As such, it takes a pretty good card to convince me a new 1-cost will see play. I believe Sub-Mariner is one of those cards, as it improves one of the buff oriented archetypes weaknesses: Flexibility.
Random 1-cost cards won’t change those decks a ton. Yet, making sure we can use our entire pool of energy, on top of the occasional strong generation makes Sub-Mariner a good addition to the roster in my opinion.
However, adding more cards to our hand might limit our ability to buff specific cards, which could be a big drawback. At the moment, most buffs are to cards on the field, or to our entire hand, so I don’t expect this to be a huge limitation, but one to keep in mind still.
Plus, we can just slot Sub-Mariner in Clea decks early on to get a feelling of its powerlevel.
