Sokovia Hot Location Guide: Strategy, Best Cards and Decks

This week's Marvel Snap Hot Location is Sokovia: Discard a card from each player’s hand. This location will show up 60% more frequently in games for the next 24 hours. Here are some decks to get you started for all players!

The Hot Location for the next 24 hours is Sokovia: Discard a card from each player’s hand. Hot Locations happen every week, starting on Sunday at 3 AM GMT. The chosen location has a 60% increased chance of appearing during games. Players who strategically build around the location or counter the decks that do so can have an advantage over their opponents! So what will you play?

Strategy and General Tips

Are you ready to be frustrated as you lose your key card on turn 3 right after you draw it? I hope so; if not, you’re going to be very frustrated playing Marvel Snap for the next 24 hours. 60% of the time is a lot of the time, but there are ways you can try to balance the odds in your favor and this is what I will try to help you with today.

Discard decks can carry cards that can benefit from (or at least lessen the potential downside of) Sokovia. Cards such as Swarm, Wolverine, and Apocalypse will help you even the odds against the location.

If we know that in 60% of games we are going to lose a card, another less obvious approach is adding some cards that replenish your hand such as Sentinel, Moon Girl, or the new-to-Series-3 Agent Coulson.

Sentinel brings consistency, and you’re less likely to be upset if you lose it. Moon Girl has the advantage of doubling effects from your deck, whereas Agent Coulson will give you some four and five energy plays to make up for the lost card.

One slightly more fringe way to mitigate the negatives of this location is playing Ghost Rider. This card can be used to bring back the lost card if it was one you needed.

Last but not least, the new girl on the block Stature gets a guaranteed activation as long as you don’t discard her. Decks focused around her ability will get a boost from having the location do the work for them. If you own Stature, try to fit her into your deck. I do not, however, recommend purchasing Stature just for this location.

I would advise against playing decks that heavily rely on one specific card for the Hot Location period to save yourself some random heartache.

This deck has it all for Series 1 decks. We carry enough redundancy to hopefully avoid getting upset when Sokovia flips. Wolverine and Apocalypse are the best hits, but losing any of the other cards can be worked around. Sentinel is our way of adding back to our hand and pushing some additional power. Ka-Zar acts as the buff to our 1-Cost cards, and on turn five we’re looking either to play two Discard effects to set up Apocalypse or to drop a lot of power in preparation for America Chavez.

As we enter Series 2 we obtain the best card to have hit by Sokovia: Swarm. So, we adjust the deck to take advantage of this card as much as possible. With several low cost plays, we can return to Nakia as a way to add power to our cards on turn three. Before we play her we want to make plays that set up our hand so the buff hits our key cards, then on turn five we set up for an end game similar to the Series 1 deck with multiple discard effects.

Discard archetypes can carry a bunch of cards that benefit from the location. This list looks to include all of them plus plenty of Discard effects when Sokovia fails us. Included in the list is the “Skip Turns” Package (i.e. Sunspot and She-Hulk) to give us some flexibility on when we play the Discard effects while still getting value from skipping turns.

Stature gains a big advantage from this location, and this is my personal favorite Stature build which should be more consistent during the location. The rest of the game plan revolves around playing good value cards that lead into Black Bolt on turn five followed by Stature and Aero on six. Honestly, any combination of good cards like Shuri and Titania will likely do the trick.

Before you ask, I tried it. Helicarrier is not good. It will clog your hand and potentially deny draws of good cards. It may be a fun addition, though, and you could slot it into your deck if you really must.

With that out of the way, this deck, while not directly built for the location, can absorb the negative impacts, and sometimes losing a card may actually help you copy good effects. We can build it with or without the Darkhawk Package and even add more cards that benefit from being discarded if we want.

After Credits

This week, Stature entered the game, and the card has an obvious synergy in any deck during this location because she will be activated for free in 60% of games. If you went in on the card, or were lucky enough to open her, today’s the day to play her. One interesting direction might be to combine her with the Disruptive Move Package, a quintet of cards that have had a recent surge in popularity.
